Triple-negative breast carcinomas of low malignant potential: review on diagnostic criteria and differential diagnoses.

Triple-negative breast carcinomas constitute a wide spectrum of lesions, mostly being highly aggressive. Nevertheless, some special histologic subtypes can have low malignant potential. The purpose of the present paper is to review diagnostic criteria and prognostic parameters of breast neoplasms of special histotypes. Specifically, adenoid cystic carcinoma, adenomyoepithelioma, acinic cell carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, tall cell carcinoma with reverse polarity, and secretory carcinoma will be discussed. For each tumour, definition and morphological and molecular features, together with

Radioresistant malignant myoepithelioma of the breast with high level of ataxia telangiectasia mutated protein.

Malignant myoepithelioma of the breast (MMB) is a rare and often aggressive disease with poor prognosis. Little is known regarding its optimal treatment and progression. We describe the clinical history of a woman following excision of a benign adenomyoepithelioma which recurred years later as a radioresistant malignant myoepithelioma with high levels of ataxia telangiectasia mutated protein and mutant p53 (Cys135Phe). MMB requires close follow-up and aggressive treatment. If adjuvant radiotherapy is adopted to improve local control, minimal postoperative delay and higher doses than for standa

Ultrasonographic features of adenomyoepithelial adenosis: a case report and literature review.

Adenomyoepithelial adenosis of the breast is extremely rare. We treated a 35-year-old woman with two small painless hard lumps in her breasts. On ultrasonography, the lesion in the right breast (upper inner quadrant) showed heterogeneous echogenicity and irregular, well-defined, uniformly hypoechoic nodules separated by funiform hyperechoic areas. The entire lesion had unclear boundaries. Excisional biopsy showed adenomyoepithelial adenosis. The mass in the left breast was a fibroadenoma. Adenomyoepithelial adenosis can show local recurrence and malignant degeneration, therefore, preoperative

Papillary neoplasms of the breast-reviewing the spectrum.

Papillary neoplasms of the breast encompass a wide range of tumor types ranging from the benign intraductal papilloma to in situ and invasive papillary carcinomas. In this review, we considered each tumor entity listed under the Papillary Neoplasms category in the latest WHO Classification of Breast Tumors (5th edition), namely intraductal papilloma, papillary ductal carcinoma in situ, encapsulated papillary carcinoma, solid-papillary carcinoma, and invasive papillary carcinoma. We examined their pathological features, current issues pertaining to diagnosis and prognostication, as well as the

A Case of Pleomorphic Adenoma and Ductal Carcinoma In Situ in the Same Mammary Gland.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor that frequently occurs in the salivary glands; however, it occurs in the breast rarely. There have been few reports of breast cancer complicated by pleomorphic adenoma of the mammary gland. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman was found to have a mass lesion in her left breast during a medical examination. A needle biopsy was performed, and a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma was made. We performed a partial mastectomy with a margin of several millimeters from the tumor. Pathological examination revealed a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma w

Glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreactivity in normal and diseased human breast.

Immunostaining for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) identifies a minor subpopulation of immunoreactive myoepithelial cells in the normal resting human breast. The GFAP-immunoreactive cells also express a panel of myoepithelial cell markers, including cytokeratin 14 (CK 14), vimentin, smooth-muscle-specific actin isoforms, nerve growth factor receptor (NGFR) and common acute lymphoblastic leukaemia antigen (CALLA). The percentage of GFAP-immunoreactive myoepithelial cells is greatly increased in various neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the breast, being highest in adenomyoepithel

Myoepithelial and epithelial-myoepithelial, mesenchymal and fibroepithelial breast lesions: updates from the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Breast 2012.

In the 4th edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Breast, myoepithelial lesions are retitled myoepithelial and epithelial-myoepithelial lesions in order to better reflect the dual participation of luminal and myoepithelial compartments in some key entities. Malignant myoepithelioma, described as a section within the chapter on myoepithelial lesions in the 3rd edition, is recognised in the 4th edition as part of metaplastic carcinoma. Adenomyoepithelioma with malignancy is categorised in terms of the cellular component undergoing malignant transformation. The list of antibodies tha

Papillary lesions of the breast.

Papillary lesions of the breast represent a heterogeneous group of lesions including benign papillomas, papillomas with focal epithelial atypia, fully fledged ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or lobular neoplasia, papillary DCIS, encapsulated papillary carcinomas without or with invasion, solid papillary carcinomas, and invasive papillary carcinomas. A micropapillary pattern characterized by lack of fibrous stalks within the papillae is observed in micropapillary DCIS and invasive micropapillary carcinoma. In addition, a variety of other rare breast lesions reveals a papillary architecture such

Indeterminate and erroneous fine-needle aspirates of breast with focus on the 'true gray zone': a review.

OBJECTIVE: To review our experience and the literature on inconclusive/erroneous fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) of breast with the focus on the 'true gray zone'. To describe the cytology, differential diagnosis, pitfalls and limitations of common and rare lesions. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a literature search focusing on breast FNAs with statistical data of C3 and C4 categories including false-positive and false-negative cases. Similar data from 2003 to 2009 was obtained from our institution. RESULTS: C3 and C4 categories account for 3-17% of breast FNAs. Contributing factors are technical di

Inconclusive or erroneous fine-needle aspirates of breast with adequate and representative material: a cytologic/histologic study.

Adequately cellular and representative fine-needle aspirates (FNAs) of breast have a high diagnostic accuracy. There is, however, a recognized category designated as "gray zone" where a definitive diagnosis cannot be reached. We reviewed our experience in this category to identify useful diagnostic parameters. Twenty-four such FNAs with surgical follow-up were retrieved from AUBMC files (2003-2009). Cytology slides were reviewed blindly. All cases were females, 29-73 years. There were three erroneous and 21 inconclusive diagnoses. The majority (15) was invasive adenocarcinomas: two cribriform,

World Health Organization classification of tumours of the breast 6th edition 2026.

The 6th edition of the WHO Classification of Breast Tumours introduces both major and minor changes based on recent advances in our understanding of breast biology, developments in diagnostic modalities, identification of specific molecular targets and new treatment regimens necessitating modifications to pathology reporting and tumour biomarker categorisation. This review summarises the main changes that strive towards a classification of global relevance. In invasive carcinoma, predictive factors increasingly inform modern breast cancer treatment. The 6th edition provides an update on HER2 r

Histopathological, immunohistochemical and imaging features of bone metastases of mammary carcinoma in bitches: cases report.

In the present case report, the histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the two cases of bone metastasis of mammary carcinoma in bitches are described. The animal in the first case is a 10 years old female poodle. The physical examination revealed a mass in the left abdominal caudal (M4) and inguinal (M5) mammary glands with a six-month evolution. The imaging exams of the right pelvic limb revealed areas of bone lysis in the distal portion of the femur. No evidence of metastases was observed in the thorax on thoracic radiographs. Microscopic evaluations were consistent wit

WT1 as a myoepithelial marker: a comparative study of breast, cutaneous, and salivary gland lesions.

WT1 immunostain is expressed in various benign and malignant neoplasms, as well as normal myoepithelial cells. WT1 shows differential expression in non-neoplastic, benign, and malignant neoplastic myoepithelial cells of the salivary gland. In this study, WT1 immunostain and other myoepithelial markers were compared to investigate the value of WT1 as a myoepithelial marker, and to delineate the expression profile of WT1 in nonsalivary gland myoepithelial cells. WT1, p63, and calponin immunostains were performed on normal and lesional tissues from the breast (adenosis, sclerosing adenosis, lacta

Epithelial-myoepithelial tumour of the lung: a case report referring to its molecular histogenesis.

Tracheobronchial submucous glands can be considered the pulmonary equivalent of minor salivary glands and therefore they can develop most of the tumours originated in these. Nevertheless, in spite of the wide distribution of this kind of glands along the tracheobronchial tree, pulmonary salivary gland-like neoplasms are not very frequent. Among them, the most frequent are mucoepidermoid and adenoid cystic carcinomas. On the contrary, pulmonary neoplasms showing a mixture of epithelial and myoepithelial elements are extraordinary infrequent, with only 11 cases collected from literature. We prese

Papillary Lesions of the Male Breast: A Study of 117 Cases and Brief Review of the Literature Demonstrate a Broad Clinicopathologic Spectrum.

Papillary lesions of the male breast (PLMB) are uncommon. To date, PLMB have been reported as individual case reports and in relatively small series. We reviewed cases of PLMB diagnosed at our medical center over a 19-year (2000-2019) period. A total of 117 cases were identified, with an age range of 7 months to 88 years. These cases included 3 of papillary ductal hyperplasia, 5 intraductal papillomas, 1 adenomyoepithelioma, 5 atypical papillomas (ie, papillomas with atypia), 51 papillary ductal carcinoma in situ, 14 encapsulated papillary carcinomas, 38 solid papillary carcinomas, and 8 invas

Human mammary gland and breast carcinoma contain immunoreactive inhibin/activin subunits: evidence for a secretion into cystic fluid.

OBJECTIVE: Inhibins and activins are members of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily and are known to modulate the growth and differentiation of several cell types. The present study investigated the localization of inhibin and activin subunits in human normal and pathological breast tissues. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study comparing the expression of inhibin/activin subunits alpha, betaA and betaB in surgical specimens from women undergoing reductive mammoplasty (classified, according to the phase of the menstrual cycle, as follicular, luteal, or postmenopausal), and patients subm
