METHODS: Sound data were recorded for 20 total hip arthroplasty (THA) and 20 total knee arthroplasty (TKA) cases. Recording devices collected sound data for

[Health policy considerations on the AIDS problems and risks in surgery].

Many physicians are afraid of contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection from their patients, especially surgeons. In medieval times, it was common for physicians to abandon their patients during epidemics (particularly plague) and to leave the cities. Today, strict hygienic practice protects medical personnel from HIV infection. Routine HIV screening of patients and medical personnel is thus not necessary. Instead, those involved (patients, medical personnel, hospital administrators, policy makers) should act responsibly.

Attempting the Impossible: Keeping a Jail COVID-Free.

AbstractPrior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States housed 2.3 million inmates in 7,147 incarceration structures that, because of age, overcrowding, and poor ventilation, exacerbated the spread of airborne infections. The flow of individuals into and out of correctional facilities compounded the challenges in keeping them COVID-free. This article focuses on the work of the health and administrative leadership, in partnership with judicial and police personnel, to prevent COVID-19 inside the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail and to mitigate its spread when the jail population and/or

Partnership for sustainability in cardiac surgery to address critical rheumatic heart disease in sub-Saharan Africa: the experience from Rwanda.

IMPORTANCE: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in the developing world results in critical disability among children, adolescents, and young adults-marginalizing a key population at its peak age of productivity. Few regions in sub-Saharan Africa have independently created an effective strategy to detect and treat streptococcal infection and mitigate its progression to RHD. OBJECTIVE: We describe a unique collaboration, where the Rwanda Ministry of Health, the Rwanda Heart Foundation, and an expatriate humanitarian cardiac surgery program have together leveraged an innovative partnership as a means

[Equity of care in gynecology-obstetrics for the deaf and hard of hearing : issues].

The deaf and hard of hearing population suffers from difficulties in accessing the health care system due to communication barriers with health care and administrative personnel who are often insufficiently trained in deafness issues. Gynecology-obstetrics consultations represent a gateway to the health system. Since 2011, there is a gynecology and obstetrics consultation dedicated to deaf people at the CHUV. This article presents the means of communication support put in place within the context of this specific consultation as well as the experience of a group of patients. Awareness of deafn

How has COVID-19 pandemic changed flu vaccination attitudes among an Italian cancer center healthcare workers?

A retrospective study was conducted among Italian cancer healthcare workers (HCWs) to describe how influenza vaccination attitudes have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis was conducted on the last three influenza seasons (2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21). To account for different relationships and proximity with patients, the study population was grouped into three main professional categories: health personnel, administrative staff and technicians. Moreover, to explore the factors affecting the coverage of influenza vaccine, a multinomial regression analysis was performed.Over th

Which of these people is your future CEO?

Americans have long believed that U.S. military officers--trained for high-stakes positions, resilience, and mental agility--make excellent CEOs. That belief is sound, but the authors' analysis of the performance of 45 companies led by CEOs with military experience revealed differences in how the branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps) prepare leaders for business. Those differences reflect the trade-off between flexibility and process that each branch of the armed services must make. Army and Marine Corps officers operate in an inherently uncertain environment. They define the mission
