Transitioning home: A four-stage reintegration hospital discharge program for adolescents hospitalized for eating disorders.

PURPOSE: Treatment for adolescents with eating disorders (ED) is multidimensional and extends after hospitalization. After participating in a four-step reintegration plan, treatment success including post-discharge community and social reintegration were examined from perspectives of patients, family members, and healthcare providers. DESIGN AND METHODS: Six pairs of patients and parents, and seven parents without their children were interviewed 2 to 30 months following discharge. RESULTS: All but two adolescents were enrolled in, or had completed school. Five worked in addition to school, a

A cross-sectional study on the characteristics and factors associated with the clinical course of child and adolescent patients hospitalized in a public child and adolescent psychiatric unit of Chile.

INTRODUCTION: Patients of the Short-stay Child and Adolescent Unit of the Del Salvador Psychiatric Hospital (Valparaíso, Chile) exhibit different clinical and social characteristics compared to literature reports of other national centers, although published data are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To describe the operation of the Unit, the socio-familial and clinical characteristics of its patients and analyze factors associated with their clinical evolution. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study to describe the patients hospitalized over a three-year period. Variables were registered in an ano

Improving Rates of Routine Vaccinations in Adolescents at an Academic Children's Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: This project sought to increase the vaccination completion rate to 95% in an adolescent medicine practice. We aimed to increase the percentage of individuals who were up to date on their meningococcal, human papillomavirus, and tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis vaccinations to 80% and to verify that these efforts led to more equitable care. METHODS: We used the Model for Improvement. After a current-state analysis, the team implemented a bundled intervention that included obtaining missing records, notifying providers about patients who needed vaccinations, and providing electr

Hospitalizations in adolescents with anorexia nervosa in Spain over two decades.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a leading mental disorder among adolescents and is associated with impaired physical health and disruption of psychosocial functioning. Knowing the major determinants and trends of AN in youth are critical for earlier diagnosis and prompt interventions. METHODS: We retrospectively examined all hospitalizations in Spain with AN among children and adolescents aged 11 to 18 years, using data from the National Registry of Hospital Discharges spanning 2000 to 2021. We adhered to the RECORD guidelines for reporting observational routinely collected health data.

Psychosocial Treatment of an Adolescent in a Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program.

Interpersonal violence is the leading cause of death in adolescents. Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) address the emotional and behavioral sequelae of assault and homicide. Few studies have been published on pediatric HVIPs, and no study offers a conceptualization model for treatment approaches. This paper demonstrates the use of empirically supported practices by outlining the services provided and subsequent treatment trajectory of an adolescent receiving care from an HVIP at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. This case study follows the Case Study Report (CARE) guidelin

A window of opportunity: referral of adolescents to the hospital Child Protection Team.

The arrival of an adolescent at the hospital provides a window of opportunity to help those exposed to abuse or neglect, by looking beyond the presenting symptom. The Child Protection Team (CPT) assesses cases of suspected abuse or neglect (SCAN) referred by hospital staff. As adolescents pose a particular array of presentations, this study assessed their socio-demographic features and characteristics of hospitalization in order to improve procedures for identifying SCAN. The study group included all 674 referrals of 10-17-year-olds to the CPT from 1991-2007. Their files were abstracted and de

Ethnic differences in the predictors of drug and alcohol abuse in hospitalized adolescents.

This study examined psychosocial correlates of drug and alcohol abuse in hospitalized adolescents and the extent to which these associations may be affected by ethnicity. Four hundred fifty-eight psychiatric inpatients, ages 12-19, completed measures of psychological functioning, environmental stress, drug abuse, and alcohol abuse. Multiple regression analyses examined the joint and independent predictors of drug and alcohol abuse for European Americans, Latino Americans, and African Americans separately. Seven variables--age, depression, impulsivity, low self-esteem, delinquent predisposition

[Early maladaptive processes, depression and alexithymia in suicidal hospitalized adolescents].

Alexithymia characterizes people having important difficulties in putting their feelings and moods into words. Adolescents' depression shows some peculiarities: one of them, which is often observed, is the equal difficulty of imparting one's feelings to others. This research concerns adolescents who attempted suicide. We study classical factors: depression and hopelessness. But our main objective is at first to study the relationship between attempted suicide, depression, hopelessness and alexithymia. The second objective of our study deals with the the prominent part of early schematas in thi

Depression and dissociation as features of borderline personality disorder in hospitalized adolescents.

26 adolescents showing Borderline Personality Disorder were compared with 12 carrying other diagnoses to clarify associated features of these conditions. In line with recent literature, the borderline adolescents evidenced significant depression and dissociation, suggesting the importance of evaluating instability of mood (versus thinking) and weak continuity in self-experience when identifying and treating this disorder.

DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Urban/suburban prehospital system. PARTICIPANTS: Pulseless, nonbreathing patients less than 20 years who underwent out-of-hospital resuscitation. Patients with lividity or rigor mortis or who were less than 6 months old and died of sudden infant death syndrome were excluded. Structured diagnostic interviews and clinicians' discharge diagnoses in hospitalized adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: In this study Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC-C) and clinicians' discharge diagnoses, as well as clinicians' admission and discharge diagnoses were compared. METHOD: Patients (N = 163) ages 12 to 16 were interviewed with the DISC-C during the first month of admission. The frequencies for different diagnoses by DISC-C and by clinicians at the time of admission and discharge were tabulated. Kappa coefficients were obtained from cross-tabulated frequencies of DISC and clinicians' discharge diagnoses. RESULTS: At discharge, the clinicians diagnosed more patients with

Comorbidities of Adolescent Pregnancy at a Tertiary Teaching Hospital in Southwestern Uganda.

Background Adolescent pregnancy presents significant health challenges worldwide. Each year, millions of teenage girls in developing regions become pregnant. In Uganda, teenage pregnancy remains common, with marked regional variations. Adolescents in low socioeconomic situations, with limited education, or who face barriers to contraceptive access are more prone to unintended pregnancies. These pregnancies may result in multiple health complications, including premature births, small for gestational age babies, postpartum depression, anaemia, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Methods A cros

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a common reason for hospitalization among female adolescents and young adults (AYA). This study's objective was to compare inpatient characteristics, outcomes, and trends between AYAs and adults hospitalized with PID in the United States. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used National Inpatient Sample data from 2016 to 2021 to identify patients with a PID diagnosis, stratified into AYA (ages 12-21) and adult (ages 22-50) cohorts.
