The impact of future expectations on adolescent sexual risk behavior.

Rates of STIs, HIV, and pregnancy remain high among adolescents in the US, and recent approaches to reducing sexual risk have shown limited success. Future expectations, or the extent to which one expects an event to actually occur, may influence sexual risk behavior. This prospective study uses longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (n = 3,205 adolescents; 49.8% female) to examine the impact of previously derived latent classes of future expectations on sexual risk behavior. Cox regression and latent growth models were used to determine the effect of future expe

Gaze behavior of pre-adolescent children afflicted with Asperger syndrome.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a form of high-functioning autism characterized by qualitative impairment in social interaction. People afflicted with AS typically have abnormal nonverbal behaviors which are often manifested by avoiding eye contact. Gaze constitutes an important interactional resource, and an AS person's tendency to avoid eye contact may affect the fluidity of conversations and cause misunderstandings. For this reason, it is important to know the precise ways in which this avoidance is done, and in what ways it affects the interaction. The objective of this article is to describe th

Clustering of adolescent dating violence, peer violence, and suicidal behavior.

To understand the co-occurrence of multiple types of violence, the authors developed a behavioral typology based on self-reports of suicidal behaviors, physical violence, and psychological abuse. Using a sample of dating adolescents from a high-risk school district, they identified five clusters of behaviors among the 1,653 students who reported being abusive or violent in the past year. Victimization and perpetration with same-sex peers and dating partners clustered together among the students who reported the highest levels of abusive (n = 357) or violent behavior (n = 146). These students a

Gender role in adolescent suicidal behavior: observations and therapeutic implications.

We analyzed the relative seriousness of suicide attempts by boys based on 430 hospitalized suicide attempters ages 13 to 19 years. A comparison by sex of adolescent suicide attempters with a school population of non-suicidal adolescents of the same age group shows greater differences in the areas of school failure, psychosomatic and distress-related symptoms and substance abuse between suicidal and non-suicidal boys than between suicidal and non-suicidal girls. These findings suggest that compared with non-suicidal boys and girls, suicidal boys show more deviant behavior than girls. The questi

Interparental conflict and adolescent problem behavior: an examination of mechanisms.

The purpose of the present study was to examine several competing hypotheses which have been utilized to explain the negative relationship between interparental conflict and child/adolescent problems. These mechanisms of operation have included modelling, genetic transmission, disrupted parenting, the role of perceptual/appraisal processes of the conflict, and an inhibition hypothesis. One hundred and forty-two young adolescents and their mothers served as subjects. Eighty were from intact families and 62 from recently divorced families. Data were collected from the perspective of the adolesce

Prevention programs for reducing adolescent problem behaviors: Implications of the co-occurrence of problem behaviors in adolescence.

PURPOSE: To examine the correlations between multiple risk behaviors in adolescent populations to document the extent to which problem behaviors are intercorrelated and to identify factors associated with variations in these correlations. METHODS: Studies from 1977 through the end of 1999 that included two or more problem behaviors in adolescents were identified by literature searches using the PsychLit database, Social Sciences Citation Index, manual journal searches and "ancestry" approaches. The behaviors studied were alcohol use, marijuana use, illicit drug use, cigarette smoking, general

Psychological-behavioral risk profiles of adolescents and their associations with suicidal behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent suicidal behaviors pose a critical public health challenge. This study examined the co-occurrence patterns of psychological and behavioral risk factors and evaluated their associations with suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA). METHODS: A multicenter adolescent survey conducted in 2023-2024 (n = 19,312) collected sociodemographic, psychological, and behavioral data. Complex survey logistic regression was applied to identify factors associated with SI and SA. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to derive psychological-behavioral risk profiles, and their discr

The adolescent reward system: Longitudinal brain-behavior dynamics and pandemic effects.

Adolescence is a critical period of brain development characterized by heightened reward sensitivity, which influences behavior and emotional regulation. Major life events, like the COVID-19 pandemic, may affect reward system development. This longitudinal study integrates self-reported Behavioral Activation System (BAS) measures with fMRI data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study® to examine reward processing during versus before the pandemic. 5,405 participants (Mage = 9.92, SD = 0.62) completed the Monetary Incentive Delay task during fMRI scanning and BAS assessments at Ba

Family Sport Involvement and Adolescent Prosocial Behavior: A Latent Profile Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Family sport involvement is critical for adolescent prosocial development, yet how distinct patterns of parental engagement relate to prosocial behavior and through what psychological processes remains unclear. Integrating Self-Determination Theory with Bourdieu's sociological concepts of habitus and capital, this study aimed to examine the distinct profiles of family sport involvement and their mechanisms in predicting adolescents' prosocial behavior. METHODS: Data were drawn from a large-scale national survey of Chinese youth (N= 14,271). Latent profile analysis (LPA) was utiliz

Abnormal Sexual Behavior During Sleep in an Adolescent: Sexsomnia and Defecation.

Sexsomnia is characterized by sexual behaviors ranging from masturbation, sexual sounds, and verbalizations, to touching and full sexual intercourse during NREM sleep, with subsequent amnesia. Autonomic activation occurs with sexual arousal. Sexsomnia has been described mostly in adult males and is still an underrecognized condition. Treatment is often effective but without current consensus. In a case now reported of an adolescent male with sexsomnia, which is rarely reported in the literature, a novel feature that is now first reported is defecation accompanying sexsomnia as a co-occurring a

[Autism spectrum disorders in adolescent sexually inappropriate behavior and sex offending].

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in juvenile sex offenders present a unique challenge in forensic child and adolescent psychiatry. Specific characteristics of ASD, such as deficits in social cognition and obsessions, may theoretically contribute to sexually inappropriate behavior (SIB), however this has been scarcely studied in adolescents. Research on normative sexual development in adolescents with ASD shows no significant differences compared to neurotypical peers. AIM: To synthesize the available evidence of the relationship between ASD, SIB and sexual offending in adolescents.

Preschool externalizing behavior predicts gender-specific variation in adolescent neural structure.

Dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus is believed to underlie the development of much psychopathology. However, to date only limited longitudinal data relate early behavior with neural structure later in life. Our objective was to examine the relationship of early life externalizing behavior with adolescent brain structure. We report here the first longitudinal study linking externalizing behavior during preschool to brain structure during adolescence. We examined the relationship of preschool externalizing behavior with amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex vo

Adolescent gambling and coping within a generalized high-risk behavior framework.

Data were collected for 1998 middle/high-school students in Ontario to assess involvement in gambling, substance use, and generalized risky behavior. To predict these outcomes, measures for anxiety, family cohesion, and coping style were also administered. Three a-priori models were posited to account for the impact of risk factors, protective factors, and combined risk/protective factors on the development of risky behaviors. A high-risk cohort composed of subjects endorsing at least one risky behavior (gambling, substance use, or generalized risky behavior) within the clinical range was crea

Adolescent physical activity and sedentary behavior: patterning and long-term maintenance.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior patterning or its impact on long-term PA sustainability, particularly during the critical transition from adolescence to adulthood. METHODS: Nationally representative self-reported data were collected (National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health: Wave I, 1994-1995; Wave II, 1996; Wave III, 2001-2002). Cluster analyses identified homogeneous groups of adolescents with similar PA and sedentary behaviors. Logistic regression predicted odds of meeting national activity recommendations in adolescence and young adu

Effects of adolescent trauma exposure on risky behavior in college women.

Individuals with sexual assault or abuse histories are likely to engage in risky sexual and other self-destructive behaviors. Studies of these behaviors, however, have focused on target traumatic events without accounting for other events in the participant's history, recency of the events, and/or developmental level at time of occurrence. The present study addressed some of these confounds by creating groups with unique and non-overlapping trauma histories among adolescent participants whose first trauma occurred at age 12 or older. Sophomore women from six regional campuses were screened in

Anxiety measures and their relationship to adolescent suicidal ideation and behavior.

This study examines the psychometric properties of three recently published anxiety measures, including their incremental validity in predicting adolescent suicidal ideation and behavior. One hundred and eighteen adolescents aged 12-18 completed measures of anxiety, depression, positive and negative affect, and suicidal ideation and behavior. All of the anxiety scales showed limitations. For example, most of the anxiety scales appeared to lack divergent validity with regard to measures of depression and positive affect. Scales in the panic domain predicted suicidal ideation after controlling f

Regularized CCA identifies sex-specific brain-behavior associations in adolescent psychopathology.

Adolescence is a critical period of neural development and a sensitive window for the emergence of psychiatric symptoms. Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) provides a unique opportunity to investigate brain-behavior associations. However, the role of sex-specific differences in these associations remains underexplored, despite their potential to reveal heterogeneous neurobiological mechanisms and guide personalized interventions. In this study, we analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, comprising 7,892 adolescents (9-10 years old, 3,896 females). Using
