INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, one in five children and adolescents suffer from mental health disorders, while facing limited opportunities for treatment and recovery. Growing up, they face multiple challenges that might contribute to the development of mental disorders. Uganda is a developing country with a history of prolonged civil and regional wars associated with child soldiers, large numbers of refugees and internally displaced people due to natural disasters and unrests, and a large infectious disease burden mainly due to acute respiratory tract infections, malaria and HIV/AIDS.

Youth suicide is a major global mental health problem. This review looks at the epidemiology, risk and protective factors associated with youth suicide, and global strategies to address this important issue. To better understand factors contributing to youth suicide, global gender differences in suicide were examined. Global rates of suicide amongst young men are higher than young women. However, there are anomalously higher rates of female youth suicide in India and China, and possible causes of this are examined further. It is likely that underestimation of youth suicide is a major factor af

The opportunities and stresses faced by today's adolescent women have the potential to affect their health, either directly or through interaction with biologic and psychosocial events. Recently achieved entry into the world of endurance and competitive sports; smoking, drug, and alcohol use; the toxic shock syndrome; and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome threaten the health of young women today. Physicians who care for adolescent women in the 1980s and in the future will require special skills to do so successfully.

OBJECTIVE: In the context of escalating impacts of climate change, bushfires have emerged as a natural disaster that may significantly impact a population's mental health. Adolescents typically residing in rural and regional areas present unique challenges in the aftermath of bushfires.
METHOD: Adhering to the PRISMA framework, a literature search was conducted to identify studies assessing the impact of bushfires on mental health in adolescent populations. Extracted information included demographic characteristics, bushfire location, timeframe post-bushfire, study design and relevant mental

Urogenital schistosomiasis affects millions of women in sub-Saharan Africa. Infection by the causative organism, Schistosoma hematobium, commonly occurs during childhood and adolescence and can lead to anemia from hematuria, inflammation on the cervix which can increase risk of HIV transmission, and pelvic infection leading to infertility. Fortunately treatment is not costly, but early diagnosis is important to reduce long-term morbidity. Our objective is to review the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and diagnosis of urogenital schistosomiasis as well as treatment to improve the reproductive he

BACKGROUND: Clinic and community-based epidemiological studies have shown an association between child psychopathology and language impairment. The demands on language for social and academic adjustment shift dramatically during adolescence and the ability to understand the nonliteral meaning in language represented by higher order language becomes essential.
OBJECTIVES: : This article reports on the association between difficulties in higher order language skills, reading, cognition, and social-emotional adjustment in adolescents.
METHOD: : 144 clinic-referred and 186 comparison youth aged

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the association between the presence of an adolescent reproductive health corner and adolescents' knowledge and use of reproductive health services (RHS) in Ghana.
METHODS: A survey was administered in May-June 2018 to 392 adolescents in Junior High Schools within two communities in the Asunafo South District. One community had an adolescent reproductive health corner and the other did not. Chi-square test and binary logistic regression were used to assess the associations between the presence of the corner and adolescents' knowledge and use of RHS.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy during adolescence is a risk factor for adverse medical and psychosocial outcomes, including psychiatric illness. Psychiatric illness is linked with obstetric complications along with impaired maternal functioning in the postpartum period. This article provides a comprehensive review of the research examining the intersection of psychopathology and adolescent pregnancy and the postpartum period.
DESIGN: A literature search was conducted using PubMed (Medline), PsycINFO, and CINAHL for articles published between 1990 and 2013 that examined depression, anxiety, bipola

Adolescence is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood in which interlocking changes in the body, mind and social relationship take place. Healthy development depends on both a propitious environment and the action of adolescents themselves. A stable family, peace, material conditions for physical health, and educational, social and vocational opportunities with a chance to make use of them before marriage, are necessary environment conditions. However, within this context the adolescent must experiment with new behaviours and relationships inevitably courting some risks. Adolescent

As adolescence is often the first time a woman will see a gynecologist, it is important for health care providers to understand and be capable of explaining the changes that occur to a young woman during these years. Many adolescents and their caretakers who seek gynecologic care for what they consider vulvovaginal abnormalities may be misinterpreting completely normal changes; education and reassurance are the best treatment in these cases. Most medical literature on vulvovaginal health focuses on abnormalities and there is a paucity of information on what is considered "normal." This goal of

Adolescents' access to contraception has improved and indication for their use have been extended beyond pregnancy prevention. For adolescents, this implies the use of hormonal contraception before the accrual of peak bone mass. Sexual hormones, notably estrogens, play a major role in skeletal development, growth and acquisition of maximal bone mass density (BMD). This article will review different contraceptive methods and their impact on BMD, with particular attention to low-dose pills and medroxyprogesterone acetate, both of which seem to alter peak bone mass acquisition. Nevertheless, bene

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a stress-sensitive period for neurodevelopment and mental health, with chronic stress implicated in the onset of psychological disorders. Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) serves as a non-invasive biomarker of long-term hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, yet its relevance to adolescent mental health remains inconsistently characterised.
METHODS: This longitudinal study examined HCC in 302 community-dwelling adolescent twins from Brisbane, Australia, with data collected at two sessions approximately two years apart, following a standardised assessm

Adolescents face a variety of challenges in their transition to adulthood; lesbian, gay, and bisexual adolescents face these typical challenges as well as additional challenges that are related to the social stigma of their sexual orientation. For some lesbian, gay, and bisexual adolescents, this stigma may induce psychosocial stress, leading to increased health risk behaviors and poorer health outcomes. In this article, we review data on the health and health care of LGB adolescents. We examine health indicators and health risks for LGB youth, including substance use, eating disorders, suicid

Vaccines currently recommended for adolescents by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices have the potential to improve the health of youth by preventing conditions such as: tetanus, pertussis, meningococcal disease, influenza, and genital warts, as well as later adult outcomes such as cervical and other human papillomavirus-related cancers. Adolescent vaccine coverage lags behind that for younger age groups. A requirement to obtain parental consent for vaccination can present a significant barrier to improving adolescent vaccine uptake across all health care settings in which adolesc
