An evidence-based medicine approach to combined treatment for ADHD in children and adolescents.

Psychiatrists need to update their skills to incorporate advances in psychiatric practice and to do so "at the bedside."To this end, evidence-based medicine (EBM), which is widely used as an educational heuristic in other areas medicine and has begun to make inroad in psychiatry training programs, provides practical methods to access, evaluate, and interpret the medical literature regarding disease causation, prognosis, diagnostic tests, and treatment strategies. With respect to treatment, EBM asserts the primacy of randomized, controlled trials for demonstrating efficacy, and, in some cases, t

Barriers to Adolescent Pre-exposure prophylaxis and Sexual Health Care in Pediatric Versus Family Medicine Providers.

Over 7000 youth ages 13-24 are diagnosed annually with HIV-1 in the United States despite the 2018 approval of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for adolescents, highlighting the need for more research on provider prescribing practices in pediatric populations. Prior research chiefly focuses on patient barriers to accessing PrEP, and thus, our study explored provider barriers. From August to December of 2023, we conducted a survey of medical providers in pediatrics, family medicine (FM), and internal medicine (IM)/pediatrics. A 5-point Likert scale (0-4) assessed comfort in providing adoles

Integrative Medicine Modalities for Adolescent Patients Undergoing Minimally Invasive Repair of Pectus Excavatum: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE), a surgical procedure done primarily in adolescence to correct pectus excavatum (PE), a congenital chest wall deformity, is associated with significant postoperative pain and opioid consumption. The use of an integrative medicine (IM) approach-combining complementary therapies with conventional treatments-can support postoperative pain management and potentially reduce opioid consumption in adolescent patients undergoing this procedure. This scoping review examines the published literature addressing the use of IM modalities

Protecting Financial Access to Health Care for Adolescents and Young Adults: Position Paper of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

Access to health care is a human right and is critical for promoting and maintaining the well-being and health of adolescents and young adults (AYAs). Health insurance or other financial support for low-income and otherwise vulnerable AYAs enables them to exercise this human right and access the health care that is essential for advancing their health and well-being. In addition, health professionals and systems require public insurance to offer care to all AYAs. For health professionals and facilities that care for large portions of low-income AYAs, cuts to publicly funded insurance could thr

Vegetarian diets in childhood and adolescence : Position paper of the nutrition committee, German Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ).

In Western countries, vegetarian diets are associated with lower intakes of energy, saturated fatty acids and animal protein and higher intakes of fibre and phytochemicals, compared to omnivorous diets. Whether the corresponding health benefits in vegetarians outweigh the risks of nutrient deficiencies has not been fully clarified. It should be noted that vegetarians often have a higher socioeconomic status, follow a more health-conscious lifestyle with higher physical activity, and refrain from smoking more often than non-vegetarians. The nutritional needs of growing children and adolescents

Defensive medicine-related practices among child and adolescent psychiatrists in Türkiye: prevalence, behavioral patterns, and associated factors.

INTRODUCTION: Defensive medicine (DM) refers to practices adopted to avoid potentially distressing medico-legal situations. Although DM has been widely studied across various medical specialties, evidence in psychiatry remains limited, and no studies have specifically examined this issue in child and adolescent psychiatry. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of DM among child and adolescent psychiatrists in Türkiye and to identify associated factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous online survey distributed between November 2024 and February 2025. T

Expert opinion and controversies in sports and musculoskeletal medicine: the diagnosis and treatment of spondylolysis in adolescent athletes.

Although spondylolysis is relatively common in adolescent athletes, there are substantial disagreements in the literature concerning the best methods for diagnosing and treating the condition. Controversy particularly arises regarding the optimal use of available imaging modalities in the diagnosis of athletes with suspected pars defects and the extent of activity restriction or brace use required for appropriate treatment. Because there have been no controlled trials on the treatment of spondylolysis and only a very limited number of studies addressing potential imaging strategies, it is diff

Investigating the safety and feasibility of osteopathic manipulative medicine in hospitalized children and adolescent young adults with cancer.

CONTEXT: Children and adolescents young adults (AYAs) undergoing treatment for oncologic diagnoses are frequently hospitalized and experience unwanted therapy-induced side effects that diminish quality of life. Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a medical intervention that utilizes manual techniques to diagnose and treat body structures. Few studies have investigated the implementation of OMT in the pediatric oncology outpatient setting. To date, no studies have investigated the safety and feasibility of OMT in the pediatric oncology inpatient setting. OBJECTIVES: The objective of th

Recommendations for promoting the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adolescents: a position paper of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

Adolescent health care providers frequently care for patients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered (LGBT), or who may be struggling with or questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. Whereas these youth have the same health concerns as their non-LGBT peers, LGBT teens may face additional challenges because of the complexity of the coming-out process, as well as societal discrimination and bias against sexual and gender minorities. The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine encourages adolescent providers and researchers to incorporate the impact of these d
