Transplants of rat hippocampus into the anterior chamber of the eye of a host animal were used to assess the effects of cholinergic and adrenergic neuronal inputs on the generation and duration of seizure activity. Cholinomimetics initiated both seizures and hypersynchronous neuronal activity in the transplants. Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP) derivatives and isobutyl methylxanthine elicited similar changes. Reflex activation of the cholinergic parasympathetic input to the iris and transplant by illumination of the ipsilateral retina also induced seizures or increased the rate of penicill

By means of neurohistological and histochemical methods using serial sections of the embryos at the age of 12-30 days of development, the premediatory and beginning of the mediatory stages in development of cholinergic and adrenergic neural plexuses have been studied in rabbit small pelvis. Appearance of catecholamine-containing cells at early mediatory stages and a gradual development and complication of the cholinergic and adrenergic neural plexuses structure are demonstrated. By birth in the rabbit small pelvis area, some elements of cholinergic and adrenergic structures begin to form.

Chronic stress is epidemiologically linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In mice exposed to chronic restraint stress (CRS), we observed weight-independent hepatic steatosis with marked degeneration of sympathetic fibers. Stress elevated circulating norepinephrine levels but blunted hepatic β-adrenergic/cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling accompanied by downregulation of β3-adrenergic receptor (β3-AR), indicating hepatic catecholamine resistance. Blocking hepatic sympathetic input prevented stress-a

Chronic administration of guanethidine to adult rats induces a selective autoimmune adrenergic neuropathy. Physiological and biochemical features of this disorder in the peripheral nervous system were explored in young adult Sprague-Dawley rats given daily intraperitoneal guanethidine monosulfate for 5 weeks. Control rats received daily saline injections. The guanethidine-treated animals gained less weight, had ptosis, and had a lower mean arterial blood pressure in the supine and upright tilted positions. Norepinephrine was depleted in the peroneal, sural, tibial, and vagal nerves, the nutrie

The lungs are innervated by both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which entails the activation of adrenergic and muscarinic receptors, respectively. Both the adrenergic and muscarinic receptors are G-protein-coupled receptors, and they share many similar signal transduction molecules. These receptors are widely expressed in the lung and the specific receptor expression can vary among the species. The location and the subtype of receptor expressed are important in the regulation of normal airway function. Acetylcholine released from the parasympathetic fibers activates the M

A microspectral fluorescence-histochemical method was used to study the sympathetic neural apparatus of the rat uterus at different phases of the sexual cycle. Most nerve fibers, as perivascular plexuses and terminals emanating from them, were located in the myometrium. It is suggested that the uterus contains reserve ("silent" nerve fibers, which explains the variability in their appearance in this organ. Microspectrofluorimetric studies identified catecholamines and serotonin in varicose swellings and intervaricosity segments of nerve fibers; levels at test points showed a strong linear corr

Uterus sympathetic nervous apparatus in various phases of sexual cycle in rats was studied with the microspectral fluorescent method. The main part of nervous fibers in the form of perivascular plexus and terminals deviating from them are localized in myometrium. We suppose presence of reserve ("silent") nervous fibers in uterus which explains the inconstancy of their revealing in the organ. Catecholamines and serotonin are identified in varicose enlargements and intervaricose parts of nervous fibers by the way of microspectrofluorometry. Their concentration in probing places is characterized

Levels of cyclic nucleotides and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity were examined following the application of various kinds of stimuli to superior cervical sympathetic ganglia (SCG), nodose ganglia, and vagus nerve fibers excised from the rat. The level of cyclic GMP in the SCG rose rapidly to about 4.5- to 7.5-fold the unstimulated control with 10 min of incubation after applications of preganglionic electrical stimulation (10 Hz), acetylcholine (ACh; 1 mM), or high extracellular K+ ( [K+]0, 70 mM). The cyclic GMP level in nodose ganglia was increased less than in the SCG by either ACh o

The autonomic outflow and sensory structures in the ovary and accessory reproductive organs of the hamster are described by means of specific fluorescence and enzyme histochemical techniques for the demonstration of catecholamine and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), respectively. Sympathetic nerves accompany branches of the major blood vessels in the mesentery of the ovary, oviduct and tubal uterine horn and invest the vascular bed in each of these organs. Vasomotor fibers predominate in the ovary and oviduct, though occasional adrenergic axons supply thecal and interstitial tissues in the ovary a

To explore the possibility that adrenergic fibers influence epithelial wound healing in the rabbit cornea, chronic electrodes were implanted in the left cervical sympathetic nerve, and symmetrical wounds were produced on the corneal epithelium of both eyes by means of n-heptanol. Continuous sympathetic stimulation was applied to awake, unrestrained animals during the wound-healing process (2-3 days) by use of a portable stimulator that delivered 1 ms, 3-Hz electric pulses at an amplitude necessary to evoke mydriasis. Migration rates of epithelial cells surrounding the wound and estimated wound

Cutting the suspensory ligament reduced the ovarian content of norepinephrine (NE) to less than half that of controls and only a few blood vessels had perivascular fibers and an occasional nerve remained in the interstitial gland. Cutting the ovarian plexus had a less drastic, but similar effect on the ovarian content of NE and on the pattern of ovarian adrenergic nerves. Cutting both the suspensory ligament and ovarian plexus eliminated visualization of ovarian adrenergic nerves, but some ovarian NE was still measurable. Fluorescence and electron microscopic studies of the suspensory ligament

Neisseria meningitidis crosses the blood-brain barrier (BBB) following the activation of the β2-adrenergic receptor by the type IV pili (TFP). Two components of the type IV pili recruit the β2-adrenergic receptor, the major pilin PilE and the minor pilin PilV. Here, we report that a strain deleted of PilX, one of the three minor pilins, is defective in endothelial cell signaling. The signaling role of PilX was abolished when pili were not retractable. Purified PilX was unable to recruit the β2-adrenergic receptor, thus suggesting that PilX was playing an indirect role in endothelial cell signa

The kidney is innervated by afferent sensory and efferent sympathetic nerve fibers. Norepinephrine (NE) is the primary neurotransmitter for post-ganglionic sympathetic adrenergic nerves, and its signaling, regulated through adrenergic receptors (AR), modulates renal function and pathophysiology under disease conditions. Renal sympathetic overactivity and increased NE level are commonly seen in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and are critical factors in the progression of renal disease. Blockade of sympathetic nerve-derived signaling by renal denervation or AR blockade in clinical and experimental

Control of expression of molecular receptors for chemical messengers and modulation of these receptors' activity are now established as ways to alter cellular reaction. This paper extends these mechanisms to the arena of pathological pain by presenting the hypothesis that increased expression of alpha-adrenergic receptors in primary afferent neurons is part of the etiology of pain in classical causalgia. It is argued that partial denervation by lesion of peripheral nerve or by tissue destruction induces a change in peripheral nociceptors, making them excitable by sympathetic activity and adren

We evaluated the nerve blood flow (NBF), light and electron microscopy, and adrenergic innervation of rat sciatic nerve at 2-45 days after the application of four loose ligatures. Ischemia developed at the lesion edge, creating an endoneurial dam. Calcitonin gene-related peptide, norepinephrine and NBF were increased within the lesion. Morphologic alterations consisted of early endoneurial edema, followed by myelinated fiber degeneration, with relative sparing of small myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers, and leukocyte adhesion to microvessels. Axonal degeneration predominated over demyel

The symptoms of burning sensation affecting the feet, thought to be due to a distal small-fiber neuropathy (DSFN) affecting somatic unmyelinated fibers, are usually accompanied by vasomotor or sudomotor changes suggestive of involvement of autonomic fibers. We therefore examined the relationship between pattern of anhidrosis and DSFN and its etiology, comparing patients with "pure" DSFN (with normal nerve conduction) to those with clinical DSFN (minor conduction abnormalities). We reviewed 125 cases with a clinical phenotype of DSFN. These patients had distal burning discomfort, variable senso

Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) regulates vascular tone by releasing anticontractile factors. These anticontractile factors are driven by processes downstream of adipocyte stimulation by norepinephrine; however, whether norepinephrine originates from neural innervation or other sources is unknown. The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that neurons innervating PVAT provide the adrenergic drive to stimulate adipocytes in aortic and mesenteric perivascular adipose tissue (aPVAT and mPVAT), and white adipose tissue (WAT). Healthy male and female mice (8-13 wk) were used in all exper

Syndrome X is likely to be caused by a dysfunction of small coronary arteries. Several authors suggested that an increased adrenergic activity could be involved in the pathogenesis of syndrome X, but studies investigating this topic by indirect methods led to conflicting results. We directly investigated cardiac sympathetic nerve function in syndrome X by myocardial radionuclide studies with 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG). Twelve syndrome X patients and 10 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Cardiac MIBG uptake was assessed calculating the heart/mediastinum (H/M) ratio and a semi
