Adverse childhood experiences, adult trauma, and depressive symptom trajectories.

OBJECTIVES: Associations among adverse childhood experiences prior to age 18 (ACEs), subjective reports of trauma during Hurricane Sandy, and trajectories of depressive symptoms reported by community-dwelling older people were examined. METHODS: We analyzed 6 waves of data from 5,688 people aged 50-74 recruited in 2006 and followed for 12-years using multilevel mixed effects models. RESULTS: We found that: (1) people who experienced ACEs had trajectories of depressive symptoms in late life that were higher than people not having these experiences, (2) people experiencing two or more ACEs wer

Adverse Childhood Experiences Among 3 Generations of Latinx Youth.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. immigrant paradox shows worsening health across generations, with U.S.-born Latinx having poorer health outcomes than immigrants. Adverse childhood experiences are associated with increased health risk over the life course, warranting further investigation. This study examines adverse childhood experience distribution across generations in a community sample of first-, second-, and +third-generation Latinx youth. METHODS: Survey data were collected at 7 timepoints from 2005 to 2016; 1,303 participants completed follow-ups, including adverse childhood experiences, at Tim

Adverse childhood experiences. Knowledge and use by pediatrics residents.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with the acquisition of risk behaviors and development of chronic and mental diseases since adolescence and in adult life. OBJECTIVE: To identify the knowledge and the frequency pediatrics residents ask about ACEs with. METHODS: Through an online survey sent to all resident physicians of the 2017-2018 academic year of a tertiary care children's hospital, demographic variables, knowledge, use, training and barriers to interrogate and search for ACEs were collected. RESULTS: 21% of residents answered the survey; the major

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mental Health Conditions Among Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked with poor physical and mental health. This study examined adult respondents' (e.g. parental) reports from the 2016-17 National Survey of Children's Health, a nationally representative study of health outcomes and social contexts of U.S. households with noninstitutionalized children. METHODS: Logistic regression was used to examine associations between ACEs and reports of current depression, anxiety, conduct/behavioral problems, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and substance use disorder among youth (n = 29,617; 49% female

Adverse childhood experiences and postpartum depression in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Women are particularly vulnerable to recurrence of bipolar disorder (BD) following childbirth. Risk of postpartum psychosis (PP) is especially high, but postpartum depression (PPD) is also common. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have not been associated with PP, but have been associated with PPD in non-bipolar samples. The relationship between ACEs and PPD within BD remains to be investigated. Here, we examined this association in a large, well-defined sample of women with BD. METHODS: Participants were 575 parous women with DSM-IV BD. Lifetime psychopathology, including peri

Screening for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs): Cautions and suggestions.

This article argues that it is still premature to start widespread screening for adverse childhood experiences (ACE) in health care settings until we have answers to several important questions: 1) what are the effective interventions and responses we need to have in place to offer to those with positive ACE screening, 2) what are the potential negative outcomes and costs to screening that need to be buffered in any effective screening regime, and 3) what exactly should we be screening for? The article makes suggestions for needed research activities.

Latent Classes and Cumulative Impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Studies of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have gauged severity using a cumulative risk (CR) index. Few studies have focused on the nature of the context of adversity and their association with psychosocial outcomes. The objective of this study was to examine the patterning of ACEs and to explore the resultant patterns' association with HIV risk-taking, problem drinking, and depressive symptoms in adulthood. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify homogeneous, mutually exclusive "classes" of 11 of the most commonly used ACEs. The LCA resulted in four high-risk profiles and one lo

Exploring the Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Hope.

To explore the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and hope, a convenience sample of caregivers bringing in children for medical investigation of child abuse at a regional child advocacy center were surveyed for adverse childhood experiences and dispositional hope. Hope in this sample had a significant negative correlation to the adverse childhood experiences subscale "abuse" (r = -.19; p < .05). The relationship between hope and the other adverse childhood experiences subscales "neglect" (r = -.14) and "dysfunctional family" (r = -.16) was not statistically significant. An anal

Long Term Physical Health Consequences of Adverse Childhood Experiences.

This study examined associations between adverse childhood family experiences and adult physical health using data from 52,250 US adults aged 18-64 from the 2009-2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). We found that experiencing childhood physical, verbal, or sexual abuse, witnessing parental domestic violence, experiencing parental divorce, and living with someone who was depressed, abused drugs or alcohol, or who had been incarcerated were associated with one or more of the following health outcomes: self-rated health, functional limitations, diabetes, and heart attack. Adverse Childhood Experiences and the Mental Health of Veterans.

Many U.S. Veterans have experienced the burdens of mental illness and suicide. The current article focuses on Veterans who served from 2001-2015. Although combat exposure and suicidal ideation are linked, approximately one half of all suicides among Active Duty service members (who have served since 2001) occurred among those who never deployed. Researchers who sought additional risks for suicide found that Veterans have greater odds of adversities in childhood than the general population. Adverse childhood experiences are stressful and traumatic experiences, including abuse and neglect, as we

Adverse Childhood Experiences Among Immigrants to the United States.

A growing number of studies have examined the "immigrant paradox" with respect to health behaviors in the United States. However, little research attention has been afforded to the study of adverse childhood experiences (ACE; neglect, physical and sexual abuse, and witnessing violence) among immigrants in the United States. The present study, using Waves I and II data from the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), aims to address these gaps by comparing forms of ACE of first- and second-generation immigrants with native-born American adults in the United Sta

Association between adverse childhood experiences and diagnosis of cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to multiple adverse health outcomes. This study examined the association between ACEs and cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Data from the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey were used. The BRFSS is the largest ongoing telephone health survey, conducted in all US states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and provides data on a variety of health issues among the non-institutionalized adult population. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to derive components for ACEs. Mul

Adverse childhood experiences and child health in early adolescence.

IMPORTANCE: Child maltreatment and other adverse childhood experiences, especially when recent and ongoing, affect adolescent health. Efforts to intervene and prevent adverse childhood exposures should begin early in life but continue throughout childhood and adolescence. OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between previous adverse childhood experiences and somatic concerns and health problems in early adolescence, as well as the role of the timing of adverse exposures. DESIGN: Prospective analysis of the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect interview and questionnaire data wh

Adverse childhood experiences reported by adults --- five states, 2009.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) include verbal, physical, or sexual abuse, as well as family dysfunction (e.g., an incarcerated, mentally ill, or substance-abusing family member; domestic violence; or absence of a parent because of divorce or separation). ACEs have been linked to a range of adverse health outcomes in adulthood, including substance abuse, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and premature mortality. Furthermore, data collected from a large sample of health maintenance organization members indicated that a history of ACEs is common among adults and ACEs are

Adverse childhood experiences and the risk of premature mortality.

BACKGROUND: Strong, graded relationships between exposure to childhood traumatic stressors and numerous negative health behaviors and outcomes, healthcare utilization, and overall health status inspired the question of whether these adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with premature death during adulthood. PURPOSE: This study aims to determine whether ACEs are associated with an increased risk of premature death during adulthood. METHODS: Baseline survey data on health behaviors, health status, and exposure to ACEs were collected from 17,337 adults aged >18 years during 1995-

Adverse childhood experiences associated with sleep in primary insomnia.

The objectives were to explore the association between self-reported adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and sleep in adults suffering from primary insomnia and to examine the impact of presleep stress on this relationship. Fifty-nine patients with primary insomnia, aged 21-55 years, were administered the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and then divided into two groups according to the achieved scores: with moderate/severe or low/no reports of ACE. The participants spent three consecutive nights in the sleep laboratory in order to record polysomnographic and actigraphic sleep parameters.

Adverse childhood experiences and smoking during adolescence and adulthood.

CONTEXT: In recent years, smoking among adolescents has increased and the decline of adult smoking has slowed to nearly a halt; new insights into tobacco dependency are needed to correct this situation. Long-term use of nicotine has been linked with self-medicating efforts to cope with negative emotional, neurobiological, and social effects of adverse childhood experiences. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between adverse childhood experiences and 5 smoking behaviors. DESIGN: The ACE Study, a retrospective cohort survey including smoking and exposure to 8 categories of adverse childhood

The Sequelae of Adverse Childhood Experiences: Screening and Management.

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions. During their twice-weekly rounds, Dr Stern and other members of the Consultation Service discuss the diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with complex medical or surgical problems who also demonstrate psychiatric symptoms or conditions. These discussions have given rise to rounds reports that will prove useful for clinicians practicing at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2025;27(3):24f

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Diabetes Risk in Mississippi Adults.

Despite Mississippi's high diabetes prevalence and the growing literature finding significant associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and diabetes, no research has examined the relationship between ACEs and diabetes risk in Mississippi adults. This study utilized data from the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to determine if such a relationship existed. Data for Mississippi respondents were weighted to account for nonresponse bias and non-coverage errors. Each respondent's total ACE exposure score was calculated based on the number of ACE categories exp

The Sexual and Gender Minority Adverse Childhood Experiences Scale.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are identity-based forms of early life adversity. Exposure to SGM ACEs is associated with increased odds of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder in SGM adults. The purpose of this study was to further test a revised version of the measure in a U.S. sample with more robust and clinically relevant mental health outcomes. METHODS: In May and June 2022, a national sample of SGM adults (N=4,445) was recruited from a Qualtrics Panel to complete a 20-minute online survey that included questions reg
