Acute inhalative exposure assessment: derivation of guideline levels with special regard to sensitive subpopulations and time scaling.

Risk assessment for acute airborne exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including exposure to chemical warfare agents, requires consideration of local and systemic effects at high concentrations. The operating procedure developed by the US Acute Exposure Guideline Level (AEGL) committee has gained special attention, in part because of the international collaboration in the project. The procedure defines three levels (AEGL-1: discomfort; AEGL-2: irreversible or other serious, long-lasting adverse effects; AEGL-3: life-threatening effects or death) for different exposure times (10 and

Tales of acute risk assessment: health effects made out of whole cloth.

BACKGROUND: Risk assessment utilizes human and animal studies and mathematical models to arrive at threshold exposures for toxic effects of various chemicals. In 1995 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) formed an acute risk assessment committee to assist in the planning for worst case chemical releases. The National Advisory Committee for Acute Exposure Guideline Levels (AEGL) examines the toxicological properties and studies of each chemical and then recommends appropriate levels. For the majority of chemicals, the committee relies on animal data (where the most data exists) supplemente

Ganoderma lucidum Ameliorates Neurobehavioral Changes and Oxidative Stress Induced by Ethanol Binge Drinking.

Ganoderma lucidum, mushroom used for centuries by Asian peoples as food supplement, has been shown interesting biological activities, including over the Central Nervous System. Besides, these mushroom bioactive compounds present antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. On the side, binge drinking paradigm consists of ethanol exposure that reflects the usual consumption of adolescents, which elicits deleterious effects, determined by high ethanol consumption, in a short period. In this study, we investigated whether the Aqueous Extract of G. lucidum (AEGl) reduces the behavioral disorders

Impact of spatiotemporal fluctuations in airborne chemical concentration on toxic hazard assessment.

Models widely used to assess atmospheric chemical-dispersion hazards for emergency response rely on acute exposure guideline level (AEGL) or similar concentration guidelines to map geographic areas potentially affected by corresponding levels of toxic severity. By ignoring substantial, random variability in concentration over time and space, such standard methods routinely underestimate the size of potentially affected areas. Underestimation due to temporal fluctuation - applicable to chemicals like hydrogen cyanide (HCN) for which peak concentrations best predict acute toxicity - becomes magn

Revisions to Acute/Off-Nominal Limits for Benzene in Spacecraft Air.

BACKGROUND: The previous short-term (1-h and 24-h) Spacecraft Maximal Allowable Concentrations (SMACs) for benzene were established at 10 and 3 ppm by NASA in 1996, based on a study of mice in which no hematological effects were noted following two 6-h exposures to benzene. When the benzene SMACs were updated in 2008, there was no revision to the short-term SMAC limits. Rather, that effort developed a long-term SMAC (1000-d) for Exploration mission scenarios.Acute benzene exposures can cause numerous neurological effects, and long-term exposure to low levels is well-known to cause acute myeloi
