Parasites as causative agents of human affective disorders? The impact of anti-psychotic, mood-stabilizer and anti-parasite medication on Toxoplasma gondii's ability to alter host behaviour.

With increasing pressure to understand transmissible agents, renewed recognition of infectious causation of both acute and chronic diseases is occurring. Epidemiological and neuropathological studies indicate that some cases of schizophrenia may be associated with environmental factors, such as exposure to the ubiquitous protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. Reasons for this include T. gondii's ability to establish persistent infection within the central nervous system, its ability to manipulate intermediate host behaviour, the occurrence of neurological and psychiatric symptoms in some infected indivi

Increased Risks of Death and Hospitalization in Influenza/Pneumonia and Sepsis for Individuals Affected by Psychotic Disorders, Bipolar Disorders, and Single Manic Episodes: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

Individuals with severe mental disorders (SMDs) such as psychotic disorders, bipolar disorders, and single manic episodes have increased mortality associated with COVID-19 infection. We set up a population-based study to examine whether individuals with SMD also had a higher risk of hospitalization and death from other infectious conditions. Anonymized and summarized data from multiple Swedish patient registers covering the entire Swedish population were supplied by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. The frequencies of hospitalizations and deaths associated with influenza/pneumo

The association between smoking behaviour, social cognition and social functioning in patients with a non-affective psychotic disorder: A prospective follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with psychotic disorders, both tobacco smoking and deficits in social cognition and social functioning are highly prevalent. However, little is known about their relationship in psychosis. The authors sought to evaluate the multi-cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between tobacco smoking, social cognition and social functioning in a large prospective study. METHODS: This study was performed within the Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis (GROUP) Study, a cohort study conducted in patients with non-affective psychosis (N = 1074), their unaffected siblings

Differentiation of psychotic and affective disorder patients from healthy controls using the niacin skin flush test: a novel analytical method and the SKINREMS system-preliminary research.

According to the phospholipid membrane theory of psychotic disorders, fatty acid metabolism may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia (SCH) and related disorders. Weakened skin reactions to niacin have been documented in SCH and bipolar disorder (BD), prompting research into biomarkers underlying these responses. So far, there is also no standard for performing and interpreting the niacin skin flush test (NSFT) which creates an opportunity for development in this area. The NSFT was conducted based on the SKINREMS system and an original method of analyzing measurements. 120 indiv

Long-term treatment of antipsychotics and combined therapy with other psychotropic medications inducing weight gain in patients with non-affective psychotic disorder: Evidence from GROUP, a longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Antipsychotics (APs) can cause weight gain. Little is known about changes in weight when APs are combined with other psychotropics. This study examines the weight change in patients undergoing long-term treatment with APs or with AP combined with other psychotropics. METHODS: Patients with non-affective psychotic disorder from the GROUP study were divided into three groups: AP medication group (APm) (n = 100), AP in combination with other psychotropics (APc) (n = 73), and medication-free (Meds-free) (n = 100). Weight change was examined at inclusion and after three years using a

Visual impairment in persons with psychotic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Persons with psychotic disorder may have poorer visual acuity (VA). The aim of the study is to investigate in a general population the prevalence of impaired habitual VA and self-reported difficulties in vision among persons with different psychotic disorders. METHOD: A nationally representative sample of 6,663 persons aged 30 or older whose binocular VA for distance and for near vision was measured with current spectacles, if any. Diagnostic assessment of DSM-IV psychotic disorders used both SCID interview and case note data. Life-time ever diagnoses of psychotic disorders were c

Does familiality predispose to both emergence and persistence of psychosis? A follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: It as been suggested that in schizophrenia an association exists between family history of schizophrenia and poor outcome on the one hand, and family history of affective disorders and good outcome on the other. METHOD: We tested for associations between four-year outcome and familial loading for psychotic disorders in a mixed sample of 150 consecutively admitted patients with functional psychosis (schizophrenia, psychotic affective disorders, other psychotic disorders) of recent onset. For each proband, a familial loading score for (i) broadly defined psychotic disorder, (ii) sch

Symptomatology of affective and psychotic illnesses related to childbearing.

Symptom patterns in women with childbearing-related onset illnesses (CBROI) and nonchildbearing-related onset illnesses (NCBROI) were compared. Women with diagnoses of Affective Disorders and Psychoses (n = 762) were divided into four groups: CBROI with psychosis, CBROI with non-psychotic affective illnesses, NCBROI with psychosis, and NCBROI with non-psychotic affective illness. Principal components analysis of 64 symptoms revealed 9 factors. The most dramatic result was the high score for psychotic women with CBROI on the factor cognitive disorganization/psychosis. Psychotic women with CBROI

The network and dimensionality structure of affective psychoses: an exploratory graph analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: The dimensional symptom structure of classes of affective psychoses, and more specifically the relationships between affective and mood symptoms, has been poorly researched. Here, we examined these questions from a network analysis perspective. METHODS: Using Exploratory Graph Analysis (EGA) and network centrality parameters, we examined the dimensionality and network structure of 28 mood and psychotic symptoms in subjects diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (n=124), psychotic bipolar disorder (n=345) or psychotic depression (n=245), such as in the global sample of affective p

The proportion of people with primary affective disorders presenting to early intervention services: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: People with affective psychotic disorders often face diagnostic delays and presentations are under-recognised at first contact with early intervention services (EIS). Despite their clinical significance, most research and service models for first-episode psychosis (FEP) have focused on non-affective psychoses. AIMS: We sought to clarify the relative prevalence of affective psychoses in EIS. METHOD: A systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of observational studies reporting proportion of affective psychotic disorders among individuals presenting to EIS with FEP was con

Psychosis and depression - a neurobiological view.

Psychosis and depression are syndromes that affect the most basic human processes of perception and judgment. Traditional dichotomous classification of psychotic and affective disorders resolved in strict separation between schizophrenia on one hand and bipolar disorder and recurrent depressive disorder on the other hand. However, it is not uncommon that depression and psychosis as syndromes are expressed together in the course of the same mental disorder. According to recent knowledge on the molecular level there are probably many multiple susceptibility genes involved in the pathogenesis of

This literature review differentially describes mental disorders in patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) with an emphasis on psychotic disorders, affective states and adjustment disorders. Psychotic disorders observed in patients with HL include affective, delusional conditions, delirium. There are different psychogenic states among the adjustment disorders. Attention is drawn to the frequency of anxious, depressive or mixed states. Conversion disorders and behavioral disorders that lead to non-compliance in patients with HL are described as well. In nosologic aspect, mental disorders in HL a

Dysbindin (DTNBP1)--a role in psychotic depression?

Previous studies yielded evidence for dysbindin (DTNBP1) to impact the pathogenesis of schizophrenia on the one hand and affective disorders such as bipolar or major depressive disorder (MDD) on the other. Thus, in the present study we investigated whether DTNBP1 variation was associated with psychotic depression as a severe clinical manifestation of MDD possibly constituting an overlapping phenotype between affective disorders and schizophrenia. A sample of 243 Caucasian inpatients with MDD (SCID-I) was genotyped for 12 SNPs spanning 92% of the DTNBP1 gene region. Differences in DTNBP1 genoty

Intact differentiation of responses to socially-relevant emotional stimuli across psychotic disorders: An event-related potential (ERP) study.

Event-related potential (ERP) studies of motivated attention in schizophrenia typically show intact sensitivity to affective vs. non-affective images depicting diverse types of content. However, it is not known whether this ERP pattern: 1) extends to images that solely depict social content, (2) applies across a broad sample with diverse psychotic disorders, and (3) relates to self-reported trait social anhedonia. We examined late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes to images involving people that were normatively pleasant (affiliative), unpleasant (threatening), or neutral in 97 stable outpat

Is schizophrenia disappearing? The rise and fall of the diagnosis of functional psychoses: an essay.

BACKGROUND: The categories of functional psychoses build on views of influential professionals. There have long been four main categories - affective, schizophrenic, schizoaffective/cycloid/reactive/polymorphic, and delusional/paranoid psychoses. The last three are included in "psychotic disorders". However, this dichotomy and the distinctions between categories may have been over-estimated and contributed to lack of progress. TEN TOPICS RELEVANT FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF FUNCTIONAL PSYCHOSES: 1. The categories of functional psychoses have varied with time, place and professionals' views, with mov

Biomarkers of Autoimmunity in Acute Psychiatric Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have suggested that autoantibodies associated with systemic autoimmune disorders are more prevalent in patients with psychotic and affective disorders compared with healthy control subjects. However, most positive studies addressing this issue have been limited by small sample sizes and lack of correction for confounding factors. The authors aimed to assess the prevalence of several autoantibodies in patients admitted to acute psychiatric inpatient care and investigate whether patients with psychotic and affective disorders have an increased prevalence of autoantibo

[Mode of onset and two years outcome of a broad spectrum of affective disorders].

In recent years emphasis has tended to be placed on assessing and diagnosing low-grade affective disorders. If mild affective symptoms are also considered a broad spectrum of affective disorders, this spectrum can be seen, not only in the manifestation of major symptoms of such illnesses as manic-depressive illness, but also in symptoms of various mental disorders. The present study was undertaken to analyze the clinical features of a broad spectrum of affective disorders in a prospective follow-up study. Ninety mentally ill patients who visited our outpatient clinic were followed for 2 years,

[Nosological status of the intermediate area between schizophrenia and affective disorder].

Non-organic psychoses diagnosed with neither schizophrenia nor affective disorder are an aggregation of heterogeneous psychotic disorders including major groups such as acute polymorphic psychotic disorders and schizoaffective disorders. Historically, similar psychotic pictures have been reported in various cultures. However, their slightly different definition hindered comparative studies. Even after the establishment of an operational diagnostic guideline such as ICD-10, epidemiological studies on this intermediate area between schizophrenia and affective disorder have brought different find
