Adapting to blurred or sharpened images alters perceived blur of a focused image (M. A. Webster, M. A. Georgeson, & S. M. Webster, 2002). We asked whether blur adaptation results in (a) renormalization of perceived focus or (b) a repulsion aftereffect. Images were checkerboards or 2-D Gaussian noise, whose amplitude spectra had (log-log) slopes from -2 (strongly blurred) to 0 (strongly sharpened). Observers adjusted the spectral slope of a comparison image to match different test slopes after adaptation to blurred or sharpened images. Results did not show repulsion effects but were consistent

Spontaneous palinopsia (visual perseveration) and bitemporal visual extinction provoked only by ocular fixation developed in a patient with multiple sclerosis who had chronic bilateral retrobulbar optic neuritis. There were no signs of hemispheral compromise. The intermittent visual symptoms seemingly arose from the lesioned optic nerves, but were probably integrated at a cortical level. Palinopsia, classically considered diagnostic of posterior hemispheral cortical lesions, can also occur in patients with peripherally placed lesions of the visual pathways.

Interocular transfer of two figural aftereffects was examined in orthotropes and strabismic subjects. Within both groups there were persons with an appreciable degree of stereoacuity and others who had little or none. BACKGROUND: Heidenhain variant of Cruetzfeldt Jacob Disease is a rare phenotype of the disease. Early and isolated visual symptoms characterize this particular variant of CJD. Other typical symptoms pertaining to muti-axial neurological involvement usually appear in following weeks to months. Commonly reported visual difficulties in Heidenhain variant are visual dimness, restricted field of vision, agnosias and spatial difficulties. We report here a case of Heidenhain variant that presented with very unusual symptoms of palinopsia and oscillopsia.

Hallucinogen-persisting perception disorder (HPPD) is a syndrome characterized by prolonged or reoccurring perceptual symptoms, reminiscent of acute hallucinogen effects. In 1992, Randolph Blake, in collaboration with Robert Cormack and Eric Hiris, reported a strong deviation in perceived direction for a target moving over an oblique, static grating. Here we follow up on this effect, subsequently called the furrow illusion, to determine its origin. BACKGROUND: Palinopsia is a visual phenomenon that has been associated with brain neoplasia, epilepsy, trauma, systemic disease, psychiatric illness, and illicit as well as prescribed drug use. Despite some resemblance to diplopia, polyopia, and physiologic afterimage formation, palinopsia is actually a distinct entity often suggestive of disease through its distinct signs and symptoms. Careful patient history, visual field testing, and neuroimaging are among the tools used to diagnose palinopsia.

It has been suggested that dyslexia is the result of a deficit in rapid sensory processing. Several methods have been used to assess this with regards to vision: temporal contrast sensitivity, visual persistence, temporal order judgments, temporal acuity, and coherent motion. OBJECTIVE: To validate the current criteria of visual snow and to describe its common phenotype using a substantial clinical database.

Reports that brain lesions may differentially affect global and local stereopsis suggest that anatomically separate mechanisms underlie these two functions. We demonstrate here that adaptation to global stereograms induces an after-effect on local stereopsis as well as on global stereopsis, showing that the two mechanisms cannot be entirely separate. We suggest that global stereopsis depends upon an interaction between primary visual area V1 and higher brain areas such as inferotemporal cortex.

We report the absence of photic retinal injury after exposing the retina to light from class 3A laser pointers for durations of up to 15 minutes.
