The Effect of Educational Interventions on Willingness to Work with Older Adults: A Comparison of Students of Social Work and Health Professions.

The study examined the effect of an educational intervention on the willingness of Israeli social work students to work with older adults, comparing them to students of nursing, speech therapy, and physiotherapy. A sample of 187 first-year students were divided into two groups: a research group (n=83) exposed to an educational intervention on ageing, and a control group (n=104) that received no intervention of any kind. Following the intervention, ageism among social work students in the research group decreased and positive behavior toward older adults increased. No significant differences we

"It's Important to Deconstruct Stigma and Respect the Beauty of Sexual Intimacy Among Older Patients:" HIV Prevention Education Among Older Adults: The Role of Clinicians.

Discussions of healthy aging often overlook sexual health due to ageism and misconceptions about older adults' sexuality. To address this gap, a health communication film intervention was evaluated among 193 social service clinicians, geriatric social work interns, and practicing clinicians. Using a mixed-methods design with pre- and posttests, participants showed a significant increase in HIV knowledge (M_pre = 7.46; M_post = 8.04; p < .001). Qualitative themes included greater awareness of sexual ageism, increased motivation for practice change, and recognition of the need for sexual health

Double Stigma in Portuguese Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Older Adults: A Study of Health Status.

The double stigma-sexual stigma and ageism-can affect the health status of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) older adults, but little is known about this topic in Portugal and internationally. The aim of this study was to assess the health status and the prevalence of chronic diseases of Portuguese LGB older adults, as well as to assess the relationship between double stigma and health status. A sample of 280 Portuguese LGB older adults completed a chronic disease questionnaire, the Homosexuality-Related Stigma Scale, the Ambivalent Ageism Scale, and the SF-12 Short Form Health Survey. An old doctor grows older.

Abstract:An old man, I am convinced that aging is no disease, but a normal part of living, just like childhood. Society should provide for our inevitable decline rather than support research to postpone our dying. Retirement, now so arbitrary, defines when men and women are old, and so discards contributions from the elderly who want to work. As a physician, I am sure that many of us over 65 could help to assist the caregivers who have so little time. Ageism is part of the problem: medical students learn ageism in their early training, and that ageism is reinforced by later contact with the fr

Stigma towards dementia in the Netherlands: A population perspective.

OBJECTIVES: Public stigma can negatively impact the wellbeing of people with dementia. Although studies have examined factors related to dementia-related stigma, the associations remain uncertain. This study explored public perceptions of dementia; levels of public stigma; associations between familiarity with dementia, ageism, and stigma; and the influence of emotional reactions on the association between familiarity and discrimination. DESIGN: Cross-sectional mixed methods survey. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Data were collected using a nationally representative sample of the Dutch population

Digital Technology for Health Service Management and Well-Being in Later Life in Canada: A Critical Analysis Using an Anti-Oppressive Lens.

Healthy aging plays a crucial role in a country's economic growth. However, older adults face health challenges, resulting in financial pressure on a country's healthcare systems, a situation worsened during the pandemic. Amidst these challenges, digital health, such as telehealth, mHealth, and eHealth, emerged to address limited healthcare resources during and following COVID-19. This paper critically analyzes the current landscape of digital health for later life in Canada and the initiatives promoting it. A critical narrative review of 38 sources, including peer-reviewed studies, policy doc

To flee, or not to flee, that is the question for older asylum seekers.

As psychiatrists, we assess, diagnose, and manage psychiatric problems in older adults. We also have an important role as their advocates and in promoting positive attitudes toward this group. Only in the 1950s was there increasing recognition that older age did not necessarily equate to senility, that treatment of psychiatric disorders in this group was possible, and could have good outcomes (Roth, 1955). There is, however, still an undercurrent of pervasive negative attitudes toward the elderly, and their psychiatric needs continue to be marginalized, with less attention from the media, fund

Evaluating AGE-PAIRS, an Intergenerational Mentorship Program for Medical Students With Older Adult Physician Alumni.

BACKGROUND: Older adult mentor programs offer a way for medical schools to prepare future clinicians to care for our aging population, including tools for avoiding the negative health impacts of ageism. AGE-PAIRS (Aging and Geriatrics Education: Physician Alumni Intergenerational Relationships with Medical Students) is a novel mentoring program that involves matching medical school students with older adult physician alumni mentors. METHODS: AGE-PAIRS was implemented at Harvard Medical School from August 2024 to May 2025. The curriculum includes a program orientation, bimonthly structured con

[Need for communication and the role of ageist attitudes in its fulfilment: a qualitative study of older people.].

The influence of everyday communication of older people on their quality of life and physical well-being finds more and more evidence and is confirmed by the latest researches of gerontologists. However, in the scientific literature, the attitude of older people towards communication, as well as their strategies for maintaining social connections are still poorly documented. While 19,5% of older people living alone recognize that they do not meet with relatives or friends at all, and 22,7% meet with relatives less than once a month, the social participation of older people, and in particular,

Inequities in the care of older adults: Identifying education gaps in geriatric medicine fellowship.

The past year amplified inequities in the care of older adults. Milestones focused on social determinants of health (SDOH) are lacking within Geriatric fellowship training. A virtual learning collaborative GERIAtrics Fellows Learning Online And Together (GERI-A-FLOAT) was developed to connect trainees nationwide. To address gaps in education around SDOH, a needs assessment was conducted to inform a curricular thread. A voluntary, anonymous survey was distributed to fellows through a broad network. We sought to understand prior curricula trainees had that were specifically focused on SDOH and o

Public and participant involvement as a pathway to inclusive dementia research.

The field of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) urgently requires inclusive research to ensure the priorities and outcomes of research apply to those most impacted. We postulate public and participant involvement (PPI) as a pathway to achieving the best science, both in research that informs health and social policy as well as in therapeutic studies to treat and prevent ADRD. This position paper aims to provide dementia researchers with evidence to understand how to apply PPI. We begin by highlighting the disparities experienced by people with dementia, including ageism, stigma o

Protective and stress factors for psychological distress: a comparative analysis of LGB and non-LGB older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Population ageing raises major public health and psychosocial challenges. Particularly, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) older people may face increased vulnerabilities and marginalization when compared to their non-LGB (heterosexual) counterparts, which may entail more risks for their mental health. The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the levels of protective - social support, spirituality, and resilience and stress factors - loneliness and ageism - among LGB and non-LGB older adults, and their impact on psychological distress (PD). COVID-19 worry, mental health indicators, and preparedness for future care needs across the adult lifespan.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has been a source of worry for many, but older adults have been identified as more vulnerable to serious cases and may therefore feel more concerned about the virus. We assessed whether COVID-19 worry was related to indicators of mental health and preparedness for future care, in an adult lifespan sample. METHOD: An online study (n = 485; age 18-82, M = 49.31, SD = 15.39) included measures of COVID-19 worry, depression, general anxiety, health anxiety, hostile and benevolent ageism, preparedness for future care, and demographic information. RESULTS: Age and l

Expanding prosthodontic services to the older patient in dental practices.

Numerous articles report on the unmet dental needs of the older patient, yet few have suggested strategies to overcome barriers to care for this unique demographic. At a time when prosthodontic services, including dental implants, offer improved outcomes, the elderly remain the least served of all patient groups. Obstacles to treatment include ageism, medical and dental complexity, financial limitations, and patients' resistance to treatment. Expanding prosthodontic care of the elderly requires a departure from traditional patient management techniques. The attempt to reverse ageism in your pr

AI Longevity and the Law of Time Justice.

This commentary responds to Truby and Kantiana's exploration of an international human right to an AI-extended lifespan. It argues that framing longevity as an individual technological entitlement risks converting time itself into a luxury good. Instead, health law should embrace "time justice": the equitable distribution of socially produced chances to live a healthy life. Rather than debating a futuristic right to live to 120, legal frameworks must address the present-day theft of healthy years driven by profound socioeconomic disparities. Because AI longevity will emerge first as measuremen

"They just did what they usually do": Mistreatment, abuse, and neglect in nursing homes from the perspective of Ministry of Health auditing teams.

The aim of this article was to examine how Ministry of Health auditing teams experience quality of care, mistreatment, abuse, and neglect in nursing homes in Israel. The research included four in-depth focus groups consisting of 19 multidisciplinary auditors. The qualitative analysis was encoded in stages with repeated comparisons between individual participants and within groups and led to three main themes: (1) Failure in addressing basic, personal, and social needs of residents in nursing homes; (2) Mistreatment manifested in violation of residents' privacy and human dignity, neglect, and p

A Multidisciplinary Model for Risk Management and Detection of Ageist Bias in Healthcare Systems in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.

Background: The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS), into healthcare offers substantial efficiency but introduces critical ethical and legal challenges, particularly the perpetuation of systemic bias against older adults ("Digital Ageism"). While technological advances may improve care, they can violate fundamental bioethical principles when models are trained on unrepresentative data. Aim: This article argues that traditional clinical risk-management models are structurally insufficient to address opaque algorithmic bias and

From Clinical Perception to Implicit Bias: Understanding Personality Traits in Lymphoma Patients.

Background/Objectives: Some haematologists share the perception that patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) behave and manifest emotional expressions in a characteristic way. Previous research suggested a unique personality profile in HL patients compared to the general population. This study aimed to analyse and compare the personality traits of HL and NHL patients to identify potential differences. Methods: In this cross-sectional, descriptive, multicentre and replicative study, we included patients with HL and NHL from the Spanish Group of Lymphoma (GELTAMO). Personality traits and other psy
