Interleukin-17 levels in gingival crevicular fluid of aggressive periodontitis and chronic periodontitis patients.

CONTEXT: Interleukin-17 (IL-17) plays an important function in initiation, progression of any inflammatory condition. It is a pro-inflammatory cytokine and considered to be founding member. Periodontitis being an inflammatory condition of periodontium, IL-17 does have a potential role in periodontitis. The current research has shown positive correlation between the IL-17 and severity of periodontitis. Therefore, this research study aimed to evaluate the levels of IL-17 in aggressive periodontitis (AgP), chronic periodontitis (CP), and "healthy gingival sites." MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total o

Aggressive periodontitis presents a higher degree of bilateral symmetry in comparison with chronic periodontitis.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the occurrence of bilateral symmetry in the distribution of clinical parameters in subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) and severe chronic periodontitis (SCP). The sample comprised 53 subjects with GAP and 33 with SCP. Probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were recorded from both buccal and lingual interproximal sites of incisors and molars. The symmetry of periodontal destruction was analyzed in terms of intraclass coefficient correlations (ICC) for pairs of contralateral sites at which PD and/or CAL

DNAzyme-Based Point-of-Care Diagnosis of Aggressive Periodontitis.

The rapid and accurate detection of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (AA), a key pathogen in aggressive periodontitis, remains a critical challenge in point-of-care diagnostics. Here, we report the development of a portable lateral flow device (LFD) using an RNA-cleaving DNAzyme (RCD-AA5) as a highly specific molecular recognition element. Selected via systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) against AA crude extracellular mixture (CEM-AA), RCD-AA5 demonstrated exceptional specificity, distinguishing the target from seven other Gram-negative and Gram-positive bact

Local and Plasma Biomarker Profiles in Localized Aggressive Periodontitis.

Localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) patients possess a systemic hyperinflammatory response after lipopolysaccharide stimulation. However, the levels of inflammatory and bone biomarkers in plasma, as well as possible associations between local and plasma biomarkers, are unknown in LAP. This cross-sectional study aimed to characterize gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and plasma biomarker profiles in LAP patients, their healthy siblings (HS), and healthy unrelated controls (HC). Fifty-eight LAP subjects, 33 HS, and 49 HC (African Americans, aged 5 to 25 y) were included. Following collection

Local inflammatory markers and systemic endotoxin in aggressive periodontitis.

While much research has focused on local and systemic factors contributing to periodontal disease, little is known regarding mechanisms linking these factors. We have previously reported a systemic hyper-inflammatory response to bacterial endotoxin in localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP). The objectives of this study were to delineate cyto/chemokines in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and evaluate systemic levels of endotoxin associated with LAP. Clinical parameters, GCF, and peripheral blood were collected from: 34 LAP, 10 healthy siblings, and nine healthy unrelated control individuals.

Birth weight of infants of mothers with aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: It was hypothesized that if periodontal infections predispose low birth weights and premature birth, then such outcomes should be apparent when the mother has aggressive periodontitis (AgP). METHODS: Birth weight data were collected by questionnaire from females with AgP, their periodontally healthy siblings, and unrelated periodontally healthy women. Both prospective and retrospective birth outcome data were used. Because many of the periodontal evaluations were performed after the births, there were incomplete data regarding most of the risk factors for low birth weight. We dete

IL-17 in sera from patients with aggressive periodontitis.

Interleukin-17 (IL-17), the prototype cytokine produced by the Th17 subset of T-helper cells, plays a role in inflammatory responses, autoimmunity, and antimicrobial responses in a variety of infectious and inflammatory diseases. In view of the inflammatory nature and severity of aggressive periodontitis, we hypothesized that IL-17 might be detected in sera from patients with aggressive periodontitis. We used ELISA to measure IL-17 serum concentrations from 67 periodontally healthy (NP) individuals and from 53 patients with localized (LAgP) and 49 patients with generalized (GAgP) aggressive pe

Supernumerary eumorphic mandibular incisor in association with aggressive periodontitis.

According to the literature, the prevalence of supernumerary teeth is 1% to 4% of permanent dentitions; and among these, the presence of fifth mandibular incisor - a supernumerary eumorphic tooth - has rarely been described in literature, and its association with localized aggressive periodontitis is an even more rare entity. This paper reports a very rare case of unusual association of supernumerary eumorphic fifth mandibular incisor with aggressive periodontitis in a Muslim individual, so that these findings generate curiosity and inspire others to carry out further studies and investigation

C-reactive protein levels in patients with aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Sera from patients with periodontal infections contain elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) compared to periodontally healthy individuals. Most studies to date have included patients with chronic periodontitis, and few investigators have studied CRP levels in subjects with aggressive periodontitis (AgP). The purpose of this study was to determine the relative levels of serum CRP in AgP patients and periodontally healthy subjects and to examine patients' characteristics that might account for intergroup differences. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 93 patients with

Localized aggressive periodontitis is linked to human chromosome 1q25.

Localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP; previously known as localized juvenile periodontitis) is one of the rapidly progressive periodontal diseases. Certain forms of familial LAP show a simple Mendelian pattern of transmission. However, no gene mutation has been identified to be responsible for the LAP phenotype. As an initial step to identify a gene mutation associated with LAP, we have performed genetic linkage analysis with four multigenerational families exhibiting the LAP phenotype. Affected individuals in the families were identified based on clinical and laboratory criteria in an atte
