Aging in place preferences of older adults with cognitive impairment and informal caregivers: A qualitative analysis of a discrete choice experiment.

BackgroundThe Netherlands spends more on long-term care than any other country. In 2015, reforms aimed to promote aging in place (AIP) but have been associated with increased crisis-related hospitalizations, rising caregiver burden, and a need for safer AIP strategies. Little is known about how people with dementia and informal caregivers prioritize AIP care and how their preferences differ.ObjectiveTo identify and compare AIP care preferences of people with dementia and informal caregivers, highlighting shared and individual priorities.MethodsWe used a think-aloud protocol within a discrete c

A Critical Approach to Aging in Place: A Case Study Comparison of Personal and Professional Perspectives from the Minneapolis Metropolitan Area.

The concept of aging in place attracts older adults, scholars, policymakers, and service providers alike. Interviews with 125 independent-dwelling men and women (mean age 71 years) and ten policymakers/community service providers queried for elements of urban and suburban contexts that strengthen or weaken desires and abilities to age in place. Overall, interviewees emphasized the need for accessible and affordable housing, reliable services, robust transportation infrastructure, and suitable options for health and care. Perspectives of low-income participants diverged notably from mainstream

A Community-in-the-Loop Approach to Smart Home Monitoring for Aging in Place: Mixed Methods Evaluation of a Co-Designed Prototype.

BACKGROUND: The population of adults aged 65 and older is rapidly increasing, while the availability of caregivers is declining. Smart homes that provide unobtrusive, continuous monitoring and alerting on clinically relevant changes in daily activity patterns offer a potentially innovative solution for aging in place. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the barriers and facilitators to the adoption of a low-cost smart home embedded within a community-based approach to health monitoring for older adults with multiple chronic conditions and who are experiencing poverty. METHODS: Using a pro

Factors Explaining State Differences in Applying for a Recent Long-Term Care Program that Promotes Aging in Place: Perspectives of Medicaid Administrators.

Older adults in need of assistance often prefer to remain at home rather than receive care in an institution. To meet these preferences, Medicaid invited states to apply for the Balancing Incentive Program (BIP), a program intended to "rebalance" Medicaid-financed long-term services and supports to Home- and Community-Based Services (HCBS). However, only about half of eligible states applied. We interviewed Medicaid administrators to explore why some states applied for BIP whereas others did not. Supportive state leadership and the presence of other programs supporting community-based care wer

Experience of Aging-In-Place in Older Adults Living Alone With Chronic Disease in Rural Areas in South Korea: A Grounded Theory Approach.

Rural areas in South Korea lack adequate healthcare facilities, and many older people wish to continue living in their current environment despite these challenges. This study derives a substantive theory on the aging-in-place process among older people living alone with chronic diseases in rural areas. Purposeful and theoretical sampling were used to select 18 participants. In-depth interviews were conducted over 3 months, and data were analyzed using Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory method. Twelve categories and 28 subcategories were identified, with the core category being "enduring inc

Combined administration of levetiracetam and valproic acid attenuates age-related hyperactivity of CA3 place cells, reduces place field area, and increases spatial information content in aged rat hippocampus.

Learning and memory deficits associated with age-related mild cognitive impairment have long been attributed to impaired processing within the hippocampus. Hyperactivity within the hippocampal CA3 region that is associated with aging is mediated in part by a loss of functional inhibitory interneurons and thought to underlie impaired performance in spatial memory tasks, including the abnormal tendency in aged animals to pattern complete spatial representations. Here, we asked whether the spatial firing patterns of simultaneously recorded CA3 and CA1 neurons in young and aged rats could be manip

State Variation in Smart Device Eligibility for Aging-in-Place Services: Recent Trends in Medicaid Section 1915(c) Waiver Coverage for Older Adults.

PURPOSE: With caregiver workforce shortages on the rise, devices with embedded sensors ("smart devices") hold promise for supporting older adults in community and at-home settings. The purpose of this study was to describe recent trends in coverage related to smart devices in Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This analysis examined at-home services as outlined in recent Medicaid 1915(c) waivers (January 31, 2020 - May 1, 2026) offered to older adults (age 60 and older) among the 50 states and District of Columbia. Data were obtained from Medicaid waiver a

HPV/cervical cancer vaccination: parental preferences on age, place and information needs.

INTRODUCTION: A vaccine against cervical cancer is available in New Zealand through school and primary care for girls aged 12-18 years. Factors that might increase or hinder widespread uptake by the target population need to be identified. AIM: To describe parents' preferences on where their daughter(s) receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, at what age, and their information needs. METHODS: 3123 questionnaires were distributed to parents recruited from 14 schools in 2008, prior to the start of the school-based vaccination programme. Outcome measures were: preferred age and place of

Age-dependent effects of nicotine on locomotor activity and conditioned place preference in rats.

RATIONALE: Most adult smokers start smoking during their adolescence. This adolescent initiation may be due to multiple factors, but little evidence is available regarding whether their brains are differentially sensitive to the addictive effects of nicotine during adolescence. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that adolescents are more sensitive than adults to nicotine's rewarding actions. METHODS: An unbiased, counterbalanced, place-conditioning procedure was used to examine drug-induced reward and locomotor activity. Early adolescent (postnatal day 28), late adolescent (P38) and adult (P9

Differential pathogenicity and lethality of bubonic plague (1720-1945) by sex, age and place.

COVID-19 brought back to the attention of the scientific community that males are more susceptible to infectious diseases. What is clear for other infections-that sex and gender differences influence both risk of infection and mortality-is not yet fully elucidated for plague, particularly bubonic plague, although this knowledge can help find specific defences against a disease for which a vaccine is not yet available. To address this question, we analysed data on plague from hospitals in different parts of the world since the early eighteenth century, which provide demographic information on i

Aging in Place or Institutional Care? Exploring Daily Life Experiences and Attitudes Toward Nursing Home: A Comparative Qualitative Study on Older Adults.

BackgroundOlder adults may spend their later years living either in their own homes or in institutional care settings such as nursing homes. However, uncertainties persist regarding how different living arrangements are experienced and perceived by older adults. Addressing these uncertainties and ensuring that older adults are provided with environments that meet their needs requires careful consideration of their subjective perceptions and lived experiences within their current living contexts.ObjectiveThis study aims to explore and compare the daily life experiences and attitudes toward nurs

Supporting the Conditions for Healthy Cognitive Aging in Place Through Integrated Care: A Retrospective Qualitative Case Study with a Longitudinal Documentary Component.

Aging in place (AiP) and healthy cognitive aging (HCA) are closely interrelated concepts but seldom examined together within real-world care systems. Integrated care (IC) offers a framework to understand how community settings can support both. This qualitative case study examined a 25-year-old community-based integrated health and social care program in a rural Czech microregion. Utilizing a realist-informed context-mechanism-outcome framework, the study integrated data from documentary analysis, semistructured interviews, and participant observation. The findings suggest that the conditions

Person-environment fit in aging in place: A digital support layer and inequalities in environmental satisfaction among urban empty-nest older adults in China.

Population aging and increasing intergenerational residential separation have made aging in place increasingly dependent on how older adults perceive the fit between themselves and their everyday living environments. Drawing on person-environment fit theory, this study situates smart technology within the broader environmental system and defines it as a distinct, independently measurable digital support layer. Using an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design, we examined environmental satisfaction among urban empty-nest older adults in China and identified social, functional, and contextua

Disorientation in Time and Place in Old Age: Longitudinal Evidence from Three Old Age Cohorts in Germany (AgeDifferent.de Platform).

BACKGROUND: Only little evidence is available on disorientation, one of the most challenging symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of disorientation in older age in association with the level of cognitive status, personal characteristics, and life events. METHODS: Three longitudinal population-based cohort studies on cognitive health of elderly adults were harmonized (LEILA 75 + , AgeCoDe/AgeQualiDe, AgeMooDe). Influence of Age at Cochlear Implantation and Frequency-to-Place Mismatch on Early Speech Recognition in Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Default frequency filters of cochlear implant (CI) devices assign frequency information irrespective of intracochlear position, resulting in varying degrees of frequency-to-place mismatch. Substantial mismatch negatively influences speech recognition in postlingually deafened CI recipients, and acclimatization may be particularly challenging for older adults due to effects of aging on the auditory pathway. The present report investigated the influence of mismatch and age at implantation on speech recognition within the initial 6 months of CI use. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
