Bradyrhizobia are abundant soil bacteria, which can form nitrogen-fixing symbioses with leguminous plants, including important crops such as soybean, cowpea and peanut. Many bradyrhizobia can denitrify, but studies have hitherto focused on a few model organisms. We screened 39 diverse Bradyrhizobium strains, isolated from legume nodules. Half of them were unable to reduce N2 O, making them sources of this greenhouse gas. Most others could denitrify NO3 - to N2 . Time-resolved gas kinetics and transcription analyses during transition to anaerobic respiration revealed a common regulation of nirK

The improvement of plant growth and yield becomes crucial to feed the rising world population, especially in harsh conditions, drought, salt stress, lack of nutrition, and many other challenges. To cope with these stresses, plants developed an adaptation strategy (mycorrhiza), which is an efficient way to reinforce their growth and resistance. For this purpose, we studied the influence of mycorrhizal fungi isolated from a natural rock phosphate mine in the vicinity of some native plants and agricultural soil to assess their capacity in increasing the growth, nutritional profile improvement, an

Organic agriculture is a sustainable method of farming, and confers disease-suppressing abilities to disease-conducive soils via specialized soil microbiomes. This study aimed at transforming a disease-conducive soil from a conventional field into disease-suppressive soil by inoculating soil from an organic field previously established as "disease-suppressive". The effectiveness of the transformed soil was established with the model plant wheat (Triticum aestivum) grown under natural conditions, with regard to its potential in inhibiting fungal phytopathogens, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium o

The extensive use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in agriculture has led to persistent soil contamination, posing serious risks to environmental and human health. Developing sustainable, in situ remediation strategies is therefore a priority. This study evaluated an integrated plant-microbe-biochar system for the remediation of CPF-contaminated soils. Indigenous CPF-degrading bacteria were isolated from agricultural soils and screened for degradation efficiency in mineral salts medium (MSM) and soil microcosms. The most efficient isolate, designated C78, was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Kle

BACKGROUND: Understanding the complex interactions between plants, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF), and elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) is crucial for enhancing agricultural sustainability and productivity, particularly in the face of future climate change. While elevated CO2 concentrations can influence AMF colonization development, AMF are known to benefit plants by improving nutrient uptake, especially phosphorus, enhancing drought tolerance, and increasing resistance to certain soil-borne pathogens. These beneficial effects of AMF can potentially mitigate some of the negative impacts of

UNLABELLED: Angel's trumpets (Brugmansia spp.) are important medicinal and ornamental plants belonging to the Solanaceae family, domesticated in the Andean region of South America. Indigenous communities in the Colombian Andes have created unique medicinal cultivars exhibiting a variety of unusual shapes in leaves, and specific uses for ritual or medicinal procedures. These cultivars exhibit leaf symptoms typically associated with viral infections, including mosaic, vein chlorosis, and morphological deformities. Colombian datura virus (CDV) is one of the most studied viruses in Brugmansia, whi

Excessive use of chemical fertilizers to increase production from available land has resulted in deterioration of soil quality. To prevent further soil deterioration, the use of methylotrophic bacteria that have the ability to colonize different habitats, including soil, sediment, water, and both epiphytes and endophytes as host plants, has been suggested for sustainable agriculture. Methylotrophic bacteria are known to play a significant role in the biogeochemical cycle in soil ecosystems, ultimately fortifying plants and sustaining agriculture. Methylotrophs also improve air quality by using

Microbial inoculants are currently advancing sustainable agriculture by reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and enhancing soil and plant health in ways that traditional chemical inputs cannot. However, despite over a century of research and development, their in-field establishment and performance remain unreliable, limiting their widespread adoption and impact. Typically, the selection of candidate inoculants centers around performance-based traits (e.g. nitrogen fixation) assessed in vitro; yet, viable and impactful inoculants must express a wide range of traits that pr

Soil acidification severely restricts agricultural productivity in red soil regions, and microbial remediation represents an eco-friendly restoration strategy. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the dose-dependent effects of Pseudomonas fluorescens on acidified latosol, maize seedling growth, and rhizosphere bacterial communities. Five inoculation rates were applied (5.5 × 109-3.3 × 1010 CFU pot-1), together with a non-inoculated control. Pseudomonas fluorescens inoculation significantly increased soil pH and base cation contents, reduced exchangeable and hydrolytic acidity, and enh

Endophytic fungi, which live within host plant tissues without causing any visible symptom of infection, are important mutualists that mediate plant-herbivore interactions. Thrips tabaci (Lindeman) is one of the key pests of onion, Allium cepa L., an economically important agricultural crop cultivated worldwide. However, information on endophyte colonization of onions, and their impacts on the biology of thrips feeding on them, is lacking. We tested the colonization of onion plants by selected fungal endophyte isolates using two inoculation methods. The effects of inoculated endophytes on T. t
