UV/Vis fluorescence spectroscopy was used to study the possible interactions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with the herbicide glyphosate and copper-based fungicide used in vineyards. The study focused on the role of DOM in the transport of these micropollutants from parcels to surface waters (river, lake). Soil solution and river water samples were collected in the Lavaux vineyard area, western Switzerland. Their fluorescence excitation emission matrices (EEM) were decomposed using parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis, and compared to their content in glyphosate and copper. PARAFAC analysis

This work aimed to synthesize new derivatives of 2-hydrazinylpyridine-3-carbonitrile and to investigate their biological activity as safeners for the 2,4-D herbicide. The new 2-hydrazinylnicotinonitriles were obtained in high yields (up to quantitative) under mild conditions (25 °C, dioxane) by treating 4,6-diaryl-2-bromo-3-cyanopyridines with hydrazine hydrate. The latter were synthesized by brominating 2-(3-oxo-1,3-diarylpropyl)malononitriles, the Michael adducts, which are readily available from 1,3-diarylpropenones (chalcones) and malononitrile. An unusual side product of the bromination/c

Cryptococcus gattii, an environmental fungus, is one of the agents of cryptococcosis. The influence of agrochemicals on fungal resistance to antifungals is widely discussed. However, the effects of benomyl (BEN) on fungal interaction with different hosts is still to be understood. Here we studied the influence of adaptation to BEN in the interaction with a plant model, phagocytes and with Tenebrio molitor. First, the strain C. gattii L24/01 non-adapted (NA), adapted (A) to BEN, and adapted with further culture on drug-free media (10p) interact with Nicotiana benthamiana, with a peak in the yea

Edible insects are currently promoted worldwide as an alternative animal protein source, but they are mostly still harvested from the wild where they are predisposed to contamination with agrochemicals. This study analysed six species of edible insects (Ruspolia differens, Rhynchophorus phoenicis, Schistocerca gregaria, Oryctes sp, Pachnoda ephippiata and Acanthoplus sp) collected from different habitats and/or reared in the laboratory in Kenya and Uganda for safety from agrochemical contaminants using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The residue levels were statistically compar

BACKGROUND: Agrochemical pollution of surface waters is a growing global environmental challenge, especially in areas where agriculture is rapidly expanding and intensifying. Agrochemicals might affect schistosomiasis transmission through direct and indirect effects on Schistosoma parasites, their intermediate snail hosts, snail predators, and snail algal resources. We aimed to review and summarise the effects of these agrochemicals on schistosomiasis transmission dynamics.
METHODS: We did a systematic review of agrochemical effects on the lifecycle of Schistosoma spp and fitted dose-response

The toxicological stress induced by pesticides, particularly neonicotinoid insecticides, and its consequences in bees has been the focus of much recent attention, particularly for honey bees. However, the emphasis on honey bees and neonicotinoids has led to neglect of the relevance of stingless bees, the prevailing pollinators of natural and agricultural tropical ecosystems, and of other agrochemicals, including other pesticides and even leaf fertilizers. Consequently, studies focusing on agrochemical effects on stingless bees are sparse, usually limited to histopathological studies, and lack

The use of agrochemicals as plant growth regulators, pesticides, and soil fertilizers can result in insults among farmers and other non-targeted organisms. The adverse effects of agrochemicals are of global concern, though limited studies have delineated their toxicity on blood cells and inflammatory parameters in Fako division in Cameroon. This study examined the impact of occupational exposure on haematological and inflammatory parameters among farmers in Fako division. Briefly, 165 farmers who occupationally applied agrochemicals and a reference population of 75 non-farmers were interviewed

Occupational exposures to pesticides may increase parental risk of infertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes such as spontaneous abortion, preterm delivery, and congenital anomalies. Less is known about residential use of pesticides and the risks they pose to reproduction and development. In the present study we evaluate environmentally relevant, low-dose exposures to agrochemicals and lawn-care pesticides for their direct effects on mouse preimplantation embryo development, a period corresponding to the first 5-7 days after human conception. Agents tested were those commonly used in the uppe

1. The herbicides butachlor (2-chloro-2',6',diethyl-N-[buthoxymethyl] acetanilide) and pretilachlor (2-chloro-2',6'-diethyl-N-[2-propoxyethyl] acetanilide) are widely used in Asia, South America, Europe and Africa. Isoprothiolane (diisopropyl-1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidenemalonate) is used as a fungicide and an insecticide in rice paddies. We administered these agrochemicals to the male rat and examined their effects on cytochrome P450 (P450), glutathione S-transferase (GST), UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UDPGT), and NAD(P)H-quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1)-related metabolism in the liver. 2. Precise temporal control of gene expression is critical for studying plant biology and engineering complex crop traits. Current systems enable chemically inducible regulation but rely on costly or agriculturally impractical inducers and lack the flexibility needed to regulate combinations of native loci and transgenes. In this work, we elucidate the design rules for control systems, based on Cas9 and Cre recombinase fused to the ecdysone receptor (EcR), which respond to a widely used agrochemical methoxyfenozide (MF). First, we validated the function of both circuits in transient assays and ex

Quinofumelin, a quinoline-based fungicide, demonstrated potent antifungal activity against Fusarium graminearum, the pathogen responsible for Fusarium head blight (FHB) in wheat. Previously, we elucidated that quinofumelin targets dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH), an indispensable enzyme in the de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway. To explore its resistance mechanism, five FgDHODHII site-directed mutants with distinct genotypes were generated using the homologous recombination strategy. Sensitivity assays identified varying resistance levels: FgDHODHII-A94V remained sensitive to quinofu

Numerous agrochemicals, including pesticides and herbicides, are applied in modern agriculture, resulting in concerns for the ecosystem and human safety as humans are easily exposed to these compounds. Many agrochemicals, and their transformation products or metabolites, have shown toxicity in in vitro and in vivo studies. However, given the rapid development of novel agrochemicals, for many there is no information about their effects nor about metabolic transformations when ingested by humans. Tracing biomarkers may be the best method for assessing the impacts of agrochemicals. A combination

BACKGROUND: Recent declines in honey bees for crop pollination threaten fruit, nut, vegetable and seed production in the United States. A broad survey of pesticide residues was conducted on samples from migratory and other beekeepers across 23 states, one Canadian province and several agricultural cropping systems during the 2007-08 growing seasons.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We have used LC/MS-MS and GC/MS to analyze bees and hive matrices for pesticide residues utilizing a modified QuEChERS method. We have found 121 different pesticides and metabolites within 887 wax, pollen, bee and a

The ubiquitous contamination generating from the frequent input of agrochemicals is a major hurdle affecting the ecological sustainability of agroecosystems. Here, we investigated the dissipation of multiple pesticides in the subtropical rice-dominated landscapes under tillage intensity management, and unveiled the vital role of soil microbiome in promoting xenobiotic degradation. Three commonly used pesticides (including herbicide butachlor, insecticide clothianidin and fungicide tricyclazole) showed rapid dissipation dynamics in the field where the reduction of tillage intensity with straw i

Excessive and uncontrolled application of agrochemicals has resulted in contamination of terrestrial and aquatic environments. In the past decade, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied as agrochemical release systems to enhance efficiency while reducing the leaching of toxic molecules to the environment. In this work, we take a further step and use organic agrochemicals as linkers in the preparation of MOFs, which we have called AgroMOFs. Particularly, we have prepared a novel 2D framework, named GR-MOF-20, based on the flexible herbicide glyphosine (H5Gly) and the widely used anti

The agricultural bioactivity of 7-alkenylcoumarin derivatives was investigated by synthesizing a series of coumarin derivatives containing 7-styryl fragments by introducing a styryl group at the 7-position of the coumarin scaffold through Pechmann cyclization, substitution, bromination, and Wittig reaction. The insecticidal effects and antifungal activities of these compounds against plant pathogenic fungi were evaluated. Bioactivity assessments revealed that compound 5i exhibited the highest larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, with a mortality rate of 96% after 24 h of treatment. Compo

The effects of non-insecticidal agrochemicals on pest natural predators remain largely unexplored except bees and silkworm. The herbicide quizalofop-p-ethyl (QpE), fungicide thiophanate-methyl (TM), and plant growth regulator mepiquat chloride (MC) have been extensively applied as non-insecticidal agrochemicals. Here, we systematically evaluated multiple effects of these 3 non-insecticidal agrochemicals on three generations of Propylea japonica, an important agroforestry predatory beetle, including the effects on its development, reproduction, enterobacteria, and transcriptomic response. Driven by rapid global population growth, an unprecedented demand for food has placed severe pressure on agricultural production. While synthetic pesticides have served as a cost-effective means of safeguarding crop yields, the effectiveness of many existing agents is increasingly undermined by rising pest resistance and stricter regulatory safety margins, necessitating continuous innovation in more effective and safer agrochemicals. Conventional agrochemical discovery relies on phenotypic screening directly against whole organisms, which requires substantial labor, funding, and time. Alternat

The use of agricultural inputs, such as pesticides and fertilizers, has increased due to agricultural expansion. In developing countries, such as Ethiopia, the agricultural sector is experiencing an expanding demand and consumption of agrochemicals to support the ever-increasing population. The increase in land dedicated to agriculture is accompanied by a rise in agrochemical demand and consumption. The increased demand for agrochemicals may lead to the distribution of low-quality, adulterated, or counterfeit products. To prevent crop loss and minimize the environmental and economic impacts of

INTRODUCTION: Regulations require that agrochemicals be labeled to indicate potential harmful effects caused by exposure. The in vivo Draize rabbit eye test has historically been the standard method used to assess the eye irritation or corrosion potential of chemical substances. However, as scientific confidence has been established for certain in chemico, in vitro, and ex vivo methods developed for this purpose, regulators are increasingly accepting data from such methods in lieu of the in vivo test. Defined approaches (DAs) may also be used to derive hazard and potency predictions by applyin
