Full spectrum modeling of in situ gamma-ray detector measurements with a focus on precipitation-induced transients.

Gamma-ray detectors that are deployed outdoors experience increased event rates during precipitation due to the attendant increase in Rn-222 progeny at ground level. The increased radiation due to these decay products (Pb-214 and Bi-214) has been studied for many decades in applications such as atmospheric science and radiation protection. For those applications radon progeny signatures are the signal of interest, while in the fields of radiological and nuclear security and aerial radiological mapping they are a nuisance. When searching for radiological contamination or missing sources, an ana

Radon Solubility in Different Tissues after Short Term Exposure.

Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive noble gas, contributes significantly to lung cancer when incorporated from our natural environment. However, despite having unknown underlying mechanisms, radon is also used for therapeutic purposes to treat inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Data on the distribution and accumulation of radon in different tissues represent an important factor in dose determination for risk estimation, the explanation of potential therapeutic effects and the calculation of doses to different tissues using biokinetic dosimetry models. In this paper, radon

Influence of effective decay constant uncertainty on radon exhalation rate measurement from medium surfaces using CR-39.

The CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detector is a commonly used instrument for passively measuring radon. When using CR-39 to measure the radon exhalation rate from the surface of a medium, the effects of leakage are often overlooked. However, to a certain extent, system leakage can affect the accuracy of the measurement results. Therefore, the effect of different effective decay constants (including leakage) on the radon exhalation rate is worth studying. In this study, both theoretical and experimental validation methods were used to verify the effect of the uncertainty of the effective deca

Examining the potential for detecting simultaneous noble gas and aerosol samples in the international monitoring system radionuclide network.

The purpose of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is to establish a legally binding ban on nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions. The Preparatory Commission for the CTBT Organization (CTBTO PrepCom) is developing the International Monitoring System (IMS) that includes a global network of 80 stations to monitor for airborne radionuclides upon entry into force of the CTBT. All 80 radionuclide stations will monitor for particulate radionuclides and at least half of the stations will monitor for radioxenon. The airborne radionuclide monitoring is an important

Performance of radio-iodine discharge control methods of nuclear reprocessing plants.

It is imperative to control radio-iodine discharges to atmosphere from nuclear reprocessing plants. Inhalation and ingestion of radio-iodine cause its concentration in the thyroid gland leading to risk of thyroid cancer in humans. Two isotopes of iodine viz. iodine-131 (131I) and iodine-129 (129I) are generated in considerable quantities in the nuclear fuel as fission products in the nuclear reactors. From nuclear reactors, no iodine is released to the atmosphere during normal operations, whereas from spent fuel reprocessing plants, during normal operation, iodine is discharged to the atmosphe

A look at the grouping effect on population-level risk assessment of radon-induced lung cancer.

On the basis of considerable knowledge gained by studying health effects in uranium and other underground miners who worked in radon-rich environments, radon exposure has been identified as a cause of lung cancer. Recent pooled analyses of residential studies have shown that radon poses a similar risk of causing lung cancer in the general public when exposure occurs at generally lower levels found in homes. With the increasing accessibility of statistical data via the internet, people are performing their own analyses and asking why, in some cases, the lung cancer occurrence at the community l

Contamination control by a greenhouse for emergency medical treatment of the contaminated patient.

In emergency medical treatment of patients contaminated with radioactivity, air contamination control is very important to prevent the secondary contamination of medical staff. In order to optimize design of a greenhouse, a numerical analysis was made by using the Flow Designer software. As a scenario of air contamination, the breathing air of the patient was assumed to be highly contaminated with radioactive gaseous or particulate matter. It was found that air contamination strongly depended on the characteristics of the contaminants. The contamination map of the coarse aerosols with low diff

A union and consumer proposal for the regulation of enhanced natural radiation.

This paper discusses the problems related to enhanced exposure of workers to natural radiation and other pollutants in the working and living environment, with particular attention to radon. A method is proposed for regulating this high priority problem, which also considers the variable borderline between the controllable and uncontrollable exposure contributions. It is based on the principles of an integrated health policy regarding air quality. The complex multiple source exposure in private dwellings, at the workplace and through consumer goods should be taken into account as discussed in

Reconstructing the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) accident 30 years after. A unique database of air concentration and deposition measurements over Europe.

30 years after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) accident, its radioactive releases still remain of great interest mainly due to the long half-lives of many radionuclides emitted. Observations from the terrestrial environment, which hosts radionuclides for many years after initial deposition, are important for health and environmental assessments. Furthermore, such measurements are the basis for validation of atmospheric transport models and can be used for constraining the still not accurately known source terms. However, although the "Atlas of cesium deposition on Europe after the Che

Air radioactivity in Marambio Base: The peculiar character of Antarctic Peninsula.

The Antarctic region is considered to be the least contaminated in the world due to its specific location and separation of this area as well as low activity of humans (Hashimoto et al., 1988). Additionally, in accordance with the provision of the Antarctic Treaty System (Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, 2020) it is prohibited to conduct any actions with nuclear materials in this area. Nevertheless, Antarctica is not free from radioactive pollutants (human activity, nuclear tests or accidents) created in other parts of the world and transported by air masses or sea currents to the region of the S

Radioactivity from Fukushima Dai-ichi in air over Europe; part 2: what can it tell us about the accident?

It is shown which information can be extracted from the monitoring of radionuclides emitted from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant and transported to Europe. In this part the focus will be on the analysis of the concentration ratios. While (131)I, (134)Cs and (137)Cs were reported by most stations, other detected radionuclides, reported by some, are (95)Nb, (129m)Te, (132)Te, (132)I, (136)Cs and (140)La. From their activity ratios a mean burn-up of 26.7 GWd/t of the fuel from which they originated is estimated. Based on these data, inventories of radionuclides present at the time of t

Preliminary measurements of surface removable NORM activity in the WIPP underground.

The results of correlating surface removable activity to that measured on a fixed air sampler is reported. It was found from over 40 smears taken during a two week period that surface removable activity from Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) can be predicted to be within a factor of 2 or 3 using either a fixed air sampler measurement or even another smear measurement from a specified surface. The method is being used to take credit for background surface removable activity in similar fashion to a background count for any other radiation detector. The utility of this technique is

The assessment of human exposure to radionuclides from a uranium mill tailings release and mine dewatering effluent.

This study provides an assessment of human exposure to radiation from a river system contaminated by radionuclides of the 238U decay series released through a dam break at a uranium mill tailings pond and by the continuous discharge of dewatering effluent from 2 uranium mines. The in vivo analyses of radionuclides in 6 Navajo Indians who lived near the river indicate no detectable elevations above background concentrations. Dose estimates for inhalation of suspended river sediment indicate a maximum annual 50-yr dose commitment of 204 mrem to the endosteum. Estimates of doses (50-yr dose commi

Exposure to Xenon 133 in the nuclear medicine laboratory.

Exposure of nuclear medicine personnel to 133X was examined quantitatively at three area hospitals during ventilation-perfusion studies in which the technologists breathed through a specially made xenon-trapping apparatus. The accumulated mean xenon activity varied a great deal from hospital to hospital, ranging from 52 nCi (1.92 kBq) to over 5 microCi (185 kBq) during a typical 20-minute lung study. The observed difference largely depended on the xenon exhaust and trapping systems, which could make a 100-fold difference in exposure rates. The air flow and its exchange rate in the room were ad
