Respiratory (especially pulmonary) and urinary infections of Cryptosporidium were diagnosed in four of 26 chickens from a layer flock. Macroscopically, the lungs had various degrees of yellowish white pneumonic foci. Occasionally caseous exudates were present in the lungs and air sacs. Histologically, there was marked epithelial hyperplasia in the air capillaries, atria, parabronchi, secondary bronchi and trachea. Cryptosporidia were detected on the epithelial cell surface or in the lumens of them in the lungs. Macrophages containing cryptosporidia were frequently seen in the lumens and walls

This study was undertaken to describe clinical, mycological and histopathological findings in black neck ostriches affected with severe aspergillosis in a flock including 80 birds, near Tehran, Iran. The signs included anorexia, depression, notable weight loss, diarrhoea, severe respiratory distress and death. Grossly, the lungs showed numerous white to yellow caseous nodules and the walls of the thoracic and abdominal air sacs were thickened with inflammatory exudates containing cellular debris, necrotic masses and green mold colonies. Multiple nodules were observed in the liver, spleen and g

A 21-year-old male southern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) was presented with a chronic history of intermittently decreased appetite, lethargy, and regurgitation. On the external physical examination, the bird was determined to be in fair-to-thin body condition with the complete blood count and plasma chemistry panel being largely unremarkable. Full-body radiographic images were considered normal, and gastroscopy showed only mild gastritis and duodenitis. The penguin was euthanatized shortly thereafter due to acute onset of respiratory distress. During the gross necropsy examination,

Mycoplasma gallisepticum is the primary causative agent of chronic respiratory disease in poultry, and vaccination is the measure most commonly used for its control. Pathological changes caused by M. gallisepticum are mainly observed in the trachea and air sacs, but assessment of air sac lesions is subjective. Standardized parameters for evaluation of pathological changes, and their reproducibility and discrimination in uninfected and infected groups, are critical when assessing the efficacy of M. gallisepticum vaccination. This study reviewed and critically appraised the published literature

This study aimed at evaluate the presence and to study characteristics of Escherichia coli in the respiratory system microbiota of healthy broilers. Trachea, air sacs, and lungs of 20 broilers were analyzed at 21 days of age, reared in experimental conditions, without receiving antimicrobials. E. coli strains were isolated and identified using conventional bacteriology through morphological and biochemical characterization. The production of bacteriocin-like substances, the presence of virulence-associated genes (VAGs) of APEC (Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli) predictors, and the antimicrobi

The air-breathing fish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus has been shown to have highly plastic branchial surfaces whose area (SA) increases with temperature and aquatic hypoxia. This modulation occurs through development of inter-lamellar cell mass (ILCM). Paradoxically, in conditions where this fish has been shown capable of covering its entire aerobic scope from the water phase, it has been shown to have a very small branchial SA. To address this paradox, we measured the SA, harmonic mean diffusion distance (τh) and calculated the anatomic diffusion factor (ADF) of the branchial and swim bladder s

Anuran vocal sacs are elastic chambers that recycle exhaled air during vocalizations and are present in males of most species of frogs. Most knowledge of the diversity of vocal sacs relates to external morphology; detailed information on internal anatomy is available for few groups of frogs. Frogs of the family Hylodidae, which is endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil and adjacent Argentina and Paraguay, have three patterns of vocal sac morphology-that is, single, subgular; paired, lateral; and absent. The submandibular musculature and structure of the vocal sac mucosa (the internal wall of

The upper airways--the nose, pharynx, and mouth--lead through the larynx and into the tracheobronchial tree of the lung (the lower airways). This cavernous void in the upper airways transports external air to the alveolar sacs, in the distal segments of the tracheobronchial tree. Oxygen is absorbed from the alveolar sacs and carbon dioxide is released. Yet, under adverse physiologic conditions such as allergic or nonallergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and bronchitis, obstruction of the upper and lower airways occurs and leads to sneezing, rhinitis, and bronchospasm. The simultaneous occurrence of up

Single-atom catalysts (SACs), with precisely controlled metal atom distribution and adjustable coordination architecture, have gained intensive concerns as efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts in Zn-air batteries (ZAB). The attainment of a monodispersed state for metallic atoms anchored on the carbonaceous substrate remains the foremost research priority; however, the persistent challenges lie in the relatively weak metal-support interactions and the instability of captured single atom active sites. Furthermore, in order to achieve rapid transport of O2 and other reactive

A juvenile, wild-caught prairie falcon ( Falco mexicanus) kept for falconry was presented to a veterinary hospital for intermittent opisthotonos and torticollis. Clinical examination, complete blood count, serum biochemistry panel, and fecal analysis were unremarkable. Clinical signs did not resolve, and the bird was euthanized 6 mo after the appearance of clinical signs. Autopsy revealed a mild, unilateral hydrocephalus and nematodes within the thoracic air sac. Histopathology demonstrated mild, unilateral hydrocephalus; scattered glial nodules; meningeal nematode sections; and meningeal and

A juvenile red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) was presented to the Ontario Veterinary College from a wildlife rehabilitation facility for the assessment of an arrowhead foreign body injury. The hawk was found on the ground with the left wing in a dropped position. Radiographic images revealed an arrowhead foreign body superimposed over the left lung and thoracic air sacs, immediately medial to the ribs on the ventrodorsal view, and ventral to the scapulae on the right latero-lateral view. A coelioscopy was performed using a left lateral approach with a 2.7-mm rigid endoscope into the left cau

A flock of Indian Ringneck parakeets (Psittacula krameri manillensis) was imported to the United States from Australia. Soon after, 1 parakeet suddenly died, and a second parakeet died after a 2-day course of illness, which consisted of anorexia, lethargy, emaciation, and dyspnea. At necropsy, the affected birds had diffuse consolidation and red discoloration of the lungs, as well as thickened, congested air sacs. The microscopic examination revealed multifocal, necrotizing bronchitis, parabronchitis, and interstitial pneumonia. The lumen of the affected airways contained numerous, large syncy

Pneumatocele of the lacrimal sac is an uncommon entity and has been rarely reported in literature. The valvular function of the Hasner's valve at the lower end of nasolacrimal duct is presumed to prevent the retrograde reflux of air into the lacrimal sac with increased intranasal pressure as in valsalva maneuver. Loss of this valvular function as noted with persistent positive airway pressure ventilation can cause retrograde air reflux into lacrimal sac. The authors report a case of lacrimal sac pneumatocele which developed following blunt nasal trauma involving the bony nasolacrimal duct.

Some measurements of emphysema were made on 29 pairs of non-emphysematous lungs and 44 pairs of emphysematous lungs inflated at a standard transpulmonary pressure of 25 cm. of formalin. These were: a subjective visual assessment (units); an assessment of the volume of the lung parenchyma involved by emphysema (point count); an average subjective visual grading by eight pathologists (Co-op score); mean linear intercept or average distance between alveolar walls at a transpulmonary pressure of 25 cm. of formalin (Lm); mean linear intercept corrected to total lung capacity (LmC); internal (alveol

A 3-day-old Thoroughbred foal developed a large, air-distended, midcervical swelling that was diagnosed as a congenital tracheal bronchus with associated ectopic lung tissue. Clinical signs consisted of a compressible air-filled sac that enveloped the trachea. The nature and extent of the defect were evaluated endoscopically and radiographically. Surgical resection of the bronchus and associated air-filled sac resulted in a functionally and cosmetically acceptable outcome.

Postcranial pneumaticity has been reported in numerous extinct sauropsid groups including pterosaurs, birds, saurischian dinosaurs, and, most recently, both crurotarsan and basal archosauriform taxa. By comparison with extant birds, pneumatic features in fossils have formed the basis for anatomical inferences concerning pulmonary structure and function, in addition to higher-level inferences related to growth, metabolic rate, and thermoregulation. In this study, gross dissection, vascular and pulmonary injection, and serial sectioning were employed to assess the manner in which different soft

The performance of FeNC single atom catalysts (SACs) is significantly influenced by the porous architecture of their N-doped carbon substrates. Although the pore structure of FeNC SACs has been widely investigated from a chemical methodology perspective, the role of synthesis process engineering has received much less attention. To address this, high-gravity technology is introduced during the precursor preparation stage to achieve intensive molecular mixing. This approach successfully yields FeNC SACs with a well-defined hierarchical micro-mesoporous structure. The resulting catalyst exhibits
