BACKGROUND: Aircraft fire is recognized as an important risk factor for occupant fatality in aviation crashes, but its epidemiology has not been adequately studied.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines factors related to the occurrence of aircraft fire, ignition sources, and factors influencing rescue and firefighting in commuter and air taxi crashes.
METHODS: Commuter and air taxi crashes in 1983-88 that involved aircraft fire were analyzed using National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) data, including NTSB supplemental forms on fire and on rescue and firefighting.

INTRODUCTION: Aircraft crashes are infrequent but often associated with high mortality, morbidity, and only a limited number of survivors. These events are classified as high-energy traumas as aircraft typically maintain significant vertical and horizontal speeds at impact. The forces generated can produce a wide range of injuries, from soft tissue damage to fractures, with particular concern for neurological injury. Due to the low number of survivors, few studies in the literature specifically address spinal injury patterns.

In 2006, 67 persons were killed in aircraft accidents in Germany and involving German aircrafts abroad. In spite of extensive investigation of each aircraft accident, there are no reliable data as to the number of suicides by aircraft. A comparison of the occupational dermatitis occurring in the same aircraft factory during 2 separate decades, 1955-1965 and 1981-1990, is presented. Subungual pulpitis is highly specific to this industry, because of the handling of resins and sealing agents. The number of cases dropped from 122 to 40, in accordance with progress in preventive medicine and technological changes in the factory. Irritant contact dermatitis nevertheless remained appreciable, while allergic contact dermatitis greatly decreased.

Results of a socio-acoustic study of human reaction to aircraft noise around Australian airports are described. The relative importance of night, evening, and daytime operations in determining overall reaction is assessed using a correlation analysis procedure. The results indicate that night-time weightings used in most existing noise exposure indices including NEF and DNL, are too large. This report describes the initial hospital and burn center management of a mass casualty incident resulting from an aircraft crash and fire. One hundred thirty soldiers were injured, including 10 immediate fatalities.
