H. pylori-associated pathologic findings among Alaska native patients.

Helicobacter pylori infection is common among Alaska native (AN) people, however scant gastric histopathologic data is available for this population. This study aimed to characterise gastric histopathology and H. pylori infection among AN people. We enrolled AN adults undergoing upper endoscopy. Gastric biopsy samples were evaluated for pathologic changes, the presence of H. pylori, and the presence of cag pathogenicity island-positive bacteria. Of 432 persons; two persons were diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma, two with MALT lymphoma, 40 (10%) with ulcers, and 51 (12%) with intestinal met

Dermatology in the North American Indian/Alaska Native population.

Dermatology is greatly understudied in the American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) population. This topic deserves attention in light of the changing demographics of the United States and the healthcare disparities faced by AIAN, including access to dermatologic care. In this review, we discuss disorders that are more prevalent or otherwise important in the AIAN population, such as cutaneous malignancies, photodermatoses, acanthosis nigricans, connective tissue disorders, cutaneous infections, hypertrophic scar formation, and Heck's disease. We aim to provide an updated review and increase awaren

Racial differences in newborn intensive care morbidity in Alaska.

Birthweight-specific neonatal mortality for Alaska Natives is higher than for non-natives for the years 1987-1996. We investigated the reasons for this based on Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit information available from 1991-1996. We also investigated whether differences in mortality extended to measures of morbidity. There were less Native patients born at the tertiary care center for babies with birthweight < 1500 grams and 1500-2499 grams (64% for Natives and 87% for non-natives, p = .000). Differences in antenatal referral were only apparent for the population residing within the An

Prevalence of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis in the Alaska Native Population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in Alaska Native children. METHODS: Potential cases of JIA were identified by querying administrative data from hospitals and clinics in the Alaska Tribal Health System for codes possibly identifying JIA. Medical record abstraction was performed to confirm criteria met for JIA, demographic and clinical characteristics, and treatment patterns. Individuals age ≤18 years with a confirmed diagnosis of JIA were included. The denominator for prevalence was the 2015 Alaska Area Indian Health Se

The Role of Alaska's Tribal Health Workers in Supporting Families.

Alaska's Community Health Aides/Practitioners (CHA/Ps) are often the sole medical workers in their communities in rural Alaska, and are instrumental in providing healthcare services and education to otherwise underserved individuals. This qualitative study explored how CHA/Ps support healthy families. Six CHA/Ps from two rural communities in western Alaska were interviewed about their scope of practice, interactions with mothers, infants, families, and teens, relationship to other medical providers, and perceptions of their work. Using grounded theory, verbatim notes were analyzed in Dedoose s

Survey of fox trappers in northern Alaska for rabies antibody.

The purpose of this research was to determine whether trappers in northern Alaska acquired immunity to rabies virus from non-bite exposures while trapping and skinning arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus). In coastal Alaska recurring epizootics presumably provide trappers ample opportunity for contact with rabid animals. Serum neutralization analyses of blood samples collected from 26 individuals were conducted. All but three had negative rabies neutralizing antibody levels (< 0.05 I.U./ml). Two of these had previously received rabies vaccine but one individual who had trapped for about 47 years with

Cardiac mortality in Alaska's indigenous and non-Native residents.

Cardiac disease mortality in Alaska, from both ischaemic and rheumatic heart disease, is of interest given the high consumption of fish and high streptococcal disease rates in the indigenous population. Uniformly coded underlying cause-of-death data for the period 1979-1988, compared with that from 1955-1965, indicated that deaths from all cardiac diseases combined, have been increasing in Alaska Natives over the past 30 years. Recent mortality from all cardiac, ischaemic, and rheumatic heart diseases in Alaska Natives were 80%, 61%, and 202% of those corresponding levels in Alaskan whites, wh

Ecological niche modeling of rabies in the changing Arctic of Alaska.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a disease of global significance including in the circumpolar Arctic. In Alaska enzootic rabies persist in northern and western coastal areas. Only sporadic cases have occurred in areas outside of the regions considered enzootic for the virus, such as the interior of the state and urbanized regions. RESULTS: Here we examine the distribution of diagnosed rabies cases in Alaska, explicit in space and time. We use a geographic information system (GIS), 20 environmental data layers and provide a quantitative non-parsimonious estimate of the predicted ecological niche, based

Hair methylmercury levels of mummies of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.

Ancient human hair specimens can shed light on the extent of pre-historic exposures to methylmercury and provide valuable comparison data with current-day exposures, particularly for Indigenous Peoples who continue to rely upon local traditional food resources. Human hair from ancient Aleutian Island Native remains were tested for total and methylmercury (Hg, MeHg) and were radiocarbon dated. The remains were approximately 500 years old (1450 A.D.). For four adults, the mean and median total hair mercury concentration was 5.8 ppm (SD=0.9). In contrast, MeHg concentrations were lower with a mea

An outbreak of fatal herpesvirus infection in domestic rabbits in Alaska.

A herpesvirus infection affecting mini Rex and crossbred meat rabbits was identified in a rabbitry in Alaska. Illness affected over half of the 55 rabbits on the premises, and 16 rabbits died or were euthanatized because of illness. Disease affected all ages from adults to nursing young and occurred over an approximately 2-month period. Clinical signs included conjunctivitis and periocular swelling, ulcerative dermatitis, progressive weakness, anorexia, respiratory distress, and abortion. Hemorrhagic dermatitis and panniculitis were associated with epidermal microvesicular degeneration, dermal

Correlates of drinking during the third trimester of pregnancy in Alaska.

OBJECTIVES: To examine characteristics related to drinking during pregnancy among a population-based sample of women. METHOD: We analyzed data related to third-trimester drinking collected from the Alaska Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS). PRAMS used a population-based, stratified sampling design to survey 9733 of the approximately 44,000 live births to Alaska-resident women during 1991-1994. We defined regular drinking as one or more drinks per week on average during the third trimester. Analyses included bivariate and multivariate associations with any and regular drinking

Health implications of obesity in American Indians and Alaska Natives.

American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) are experiencing an epidemic of diabetes, increasing rates of coronary artery disease and hypertension, and poor survival rates for breast cancer that are likely partially attributable to the increasing prevalence of obesity over the past generation. Obesity may also contribute to the high rates of gallstones and to adverse outcomes of pregnancy in AI/ANs. Although overall mortality was not associated with obesity in Pima Indians (except in the most obese men), the relationship of obesity to longevity in other AI/AN groups is not known. Further stud

Primary Psychiatric Diagnoses, Commercialized Tobacco Use, and Homelessness: Comparisons Between Urban American Indian/ Alaska Native and Non-American Indian/Alaska Native Adult Clinical Samples.

Although over 70% of American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) reside in urban areas, our knowledge of urban AI/AN adults receiving mental health treatment is limited. This study compares primary psychiatric diagnoses, commercialized tobacco use, and homelessness between AI/AN and non-AI/AN adults receiving services in an urban public mental health agency serving primarily AI/AN people in southern California. Depressive disorders were the most common psychiatric diagnoses for both groups. However, AI/AN adult clients demonstrated significantly less anxiety disorders and significantly more h

Syphilis Screening in Correctional Facilities - Alaska, October 2023-September 2025.

Since 2017, syphilis cases have increased substantially across the United States, including in Alaska. Nationwide, prevalence of syphilis tends to be higher among incarcerated persons than among the general population. During 2023-2025, opt-out screening for syphilis in Alaska correctional facilities (i.e., routine testing unless a person specifically declines) found reactive rapid plasma reagin (RPR) results, which often indicate a past or current syphilis infection, in 240 (4.6%) of 5,163 persons screened. Among persons with reactive RPR results, 114 (47.5%) had newly identified syphilis cas

Newly Reported Chronic Hepatitis C Among Adults - Alaska, 2016-2023.

Hepatitis C virus is a leading cause of chronic liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver-related death and is targeted for global elimination as a public health threat by 2030. Universal screening is recommended for all adults aged ≥18 years and pregnant women during each pregnancy; periodic risk-based screening also is recommended. Persons with current infection should be linked to antiviral treatment, which usually results in a virologic cure within 8-12 weeks. To assess progress toward elimination, epidemiologic trends in newly reported chronic hepatitis C cases were assessed amon

Genome of Alaskapox Virus, A Novel Orthopoxvirus Isolated from Alaska.

Since the eradication of smallpox, there have been increases in poxvirus infections and the emergence of several novel poxviruses that can infect humans and domestic animals. In 2015, a novel poxvirus was isolated from a resident of Alaska. Diagnostic testing and limited sequence analysis suggested this isolate was a member of the Orthopoxvirus (OPXV) genus but was highly diverged from currently known species, including Akhmeta virus. Here, we present the complete 210,797 bp genome sequence of the Alaska poxvirus isolate, containing 206 predicted open reading frames. Phylogenetic analysis of t
