Drinking motives as mediators in the relation between personality disorder symptoms and alcohol use disorder.

Research shows high comorbidity between Cluster B Personality Disorders (PDs) and Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs). Studies of personality traits and alcohol use have identified coping and enhancement drinking motives as mediators of the relation among impulsivity, negative affectivity or affectivity instability, and alcohol use. To the extent that certain PDs reflect extreme expression of these traits, drinking motives were hypothesized to mediate the relation between PD symptoms and presence/absence of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). This hypothesis was tested using a series of cross-sectional an

Prospective analysis of the relation between DSM-III anxiety disorders and alcohol use disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Cross-sectional studies show a robust association between anxiety disorders and alcohol use disorders (comorbidity); however, this methodology does not allow for the testing of causal models. The authors attempted to overcome this limitation by examining comorbid relationships prospectively. METHOD: Male and female college students were assessed as freshmen (year 1), and then again at years 4 and 7, for selected 12-month anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and social phobia or panic) diagnosed according to the National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic

The prominence of smoking-related mortality among individuals with alcohol- or drug-use disorders.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Even though individuals with substance-use disorders have a high prevalence of tobacco smoking, surprisingly little is known about smoking-related mortality in these populations. The current retrospective cohort study aims to address this gap. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study sample included cohorts of individuals hospitalised in California between 1990 and 2005 with alcohol- (n = 509 422), cocaine- (n = 35 276), opioid- (n = 53 172), marijuana- (n = 15 995) or methamphetamine-use (n = 36 717) disorders. Death records were linked to inpatient data. Age-, race- and sex-adju

Executive functioning in children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: profiles and age-related differences.

The goal of this project was to examine the profile of executive function (EF) deficits and age-related differences among children with FASD. Twenty-nine children with FASD (8 to 16 years of age) completed 8 tests from the Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS). They had difficulty on many components of EF including cognitive flexibility, inhibition, some measures of verbal fluency, abstract thinking, deductive reasoning, hypothesis testing, problem solving, and concept formation. A distinctive profile emerged with performance being poorest on the card sorting test and relatively high

[Comorbid anxiety disorders and alcohol-related disorders in a population of bipolar I disorder: investigation in a Flemish population].

BACKGROUND: Bipolar I disorder (bp i) is a very debilitating psychiatric disorder which is frequently associated with comorbid psychiatric and somatic disorders. Many studies in other countries show strongly elevated prevalences of anxiety disorders and alcohol-related disorders in the bp i population, but so far no data on this topic are available with regard to the Flemish population. AIM: To determine the prevalence of anxiety disorders and alcohol-related disorders in a Flemish population of bp i outpatients in remission and to find out whether comorbidity of these disorders is linked to

Global epidemiology of alcohol-related liver disease, liver cancer, and alcohol use disorder, 2000-2021.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Alcohol represents a leading burden of disease worldwide, including alcohol use disorder (AUD) and alcohol-related liver disease (ALD). We aim to assess the global burden of AUD, ALD, and alcohol-attributable primary liver cancer between 2000-2021. METHODS: We registered the global and regional trends of AUD, ALD, and alcohol-related liver cancer using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 Study, the largest and most up-to-date global epidemiology database. We estimated the annual percent change (APC) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) to assess changes in age-standar

[Digital Interventions for Alcohol-Related Problems: From Hazardous and Harmful Drinking to Alcohol Use Disorder and Dependence].

This article provides an overview of digital interventions for alcohol-related problems, ranging from hazardous and harmful drinking to alcohol use disorder and dependence. When examining the evidence from randomized controlled trials, it is clear that the efficacy of digital interventions has been sufficiently demonstrated. However, questions remain whether this efficacy reaches individuals with alcohol-related problems. Proving their effectiveness and achieving an impact in real-world settings are likely to be the highest-priority challenges.

Stay focused! Exploring the compulsive nature of alcohol-related attentional bias in severe alcohol use disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Prominent models postulate that alcohol-related attentional bias (AB), emerging from the overactivation of the reward system, plays a key role in severe alcohol use disorder (sAUD) and is independent from voluntary control. We determined whether AB is indeed compulsive or can be modulated by the control/inhibition system. METHOD: Patients with sAUD (17 women, 13 men, mean age of 47, White) and matched healthy controls (16 women, 14 men, mean age of 44, White) performed a visual probe task with behavioral (reaction time) and eye-tracking (first fixation location and duration, second

Individual- and area-level inequalities in alcohol-related disorders and emergency hospital admissions in Catalonia.

AIMS: This study examines socioeconomic inequalities in alcohol-related emergency room (ER) visits in Catalonia, combining individual and area-level socioeconomic factors and comparing the results with the ones for all ER visits. METHODS: This population-based study retrospectively analyzed all 7 043 795 individuals aged 12 and older who received public healthcare in Catalonia in 2022 using sociodemographic, ER visits, and medical diagnoses data. Individuals were classified by individual-based and area-based socioeconomic levels (ISL and ASL, respectively). Binomial models assessed associatio

Personality-Related Factors and Depressive Symptomatology Predict Behavioral Control in Patients With Alcohol Use Disorders.

In the face of increasing social, economic, and health consequences of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and limited effects of available treatment options, the search for novel prevention and management methods continues to remain a timely and valid endeavor. This, however, requires a better grasp of the theoretical framework underlying addiction mechanisms. With the goal to extend the existing body of evidence on AUDs, we set out to investigate the effect of personality-related factors and depressive symptomatology on (i) impulsivity, (ii) cognitive response inhibition, and (iii) the links betwee

Rural-urban differences in provider practice related to preconception counselling and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are the most common form of nongenetic birth defect in North America with devastating, long-term consequences. Physicians are the primary providers of medical care for pregnant women and they play an important role in the prevention and diagnosis of FASD. We sought to determine whether differences exist between rural and urban health care providers in knowledge of, attitudes about and awareness of FASD and preconception counselling. METHODS: Surveys were mailed to a national, random sample of Canadian health care providers (n = 5361) between

Polygenic Risk Profiles and the Manifestations of Alcohol Use Disorder and Related Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that multiple genetically influenced pathways of risk impact alcohol use disorder (AUD), including externalizing (disinhibition, behavioral undercontrol), internalizing (negative affect, depression), and alcohol-specific (physiological response to alcohol) factors. This study examined the joint effects of genetic influences representing these risk domains on AUD and their influence on comorbid phenotypes among individuals with AUD. METHODS: Participants of European-like ancestry from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (N = 6883) provided data o

Sex differences in inflammatory mechanisms related to alcohol use disorder and depression.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) continues to negatively impact millions of men and women in the United States each year, and current available treatments for AUD lack widespread efficacy. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most common comorbid condition with AUD and is also often treatment resistant. Many studies have found a relationship of immune modulators with both alcohol use and depression. There are many sex differences within the immune system that may contribute to both AUD and MDD, as well as to sex differences in their prevalence and presentation. Examining these mechanisms may offer

Alcohol use disorder and liver injury related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alcohol use disorder is a complex and heterogeneous phenomenon that can be studied from several points of view by focusing on its different components. Alcohol is a hepatotoxin whose metabolism creates profound alterations within the hepatocyte. The liver is the central organ in the metabolism of alcohol, a process that also involves other organs and tissues such as the brain, heart and muscles, but the most relevant organ is the liver. The anatomopathological alterations in the liver associated with the prolonged use of alcohol range from the simple accumulation of neutral fats in the hepatoc

Conflict-related medial frontal theta as an endophenotype for alcohol use disorder.

Diminished cognitive control in alcohol use disorder (AUD) is thought to be mediated by prefrontal cortex circuitry dysregulation. Research testing the relationship between AUD and specific cognitive control psychophysiological correlates, such as medial frontal (MF) theta-band EEG power, is scarce, and the etiology of this relationship is largely unknown. The current report tested relationship between pathological alcohol use through young adulthood and reduced conflict-related theta at age 29 in a large prospective population-based twin sample. Greater lifetime AUD symptomatology was associa

[Review of neurobehavioral effects of alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder in an animal model].

Animal models had been investigated to clear the mechanism of neurobehavioral deficits caused by in-utero alcohol exposure. 5-HT1A agonist and antioxidants administration during pregnancy could attenuate in-utero alcohol-induced teratogenesis. Recently, activity-dependent neuroprotective peptides were reported to have the potential therapeutic effect for alcohol-related teratogenicity. Environmental and motor training for litters exposed to in-utero alcohol may have improve behavioral performance. We will review amelioration of fetal alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders in animal model

Antisocial Personality Disorder and depression in relation to alcoholism: a community-based sample.

OBJECTIVE: Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and depression frequently co-occur with alcoholism. This study examined the relationship between the presence of ASPD or depression and the course and severity of alcoholism. METHOD: Alcoholic men (n = 207), recruited from a community-based sample, the Minnesota Twin-Family Study (MTFS), were categorized according to comorbid diagnoses into the following four groups: alcoholics with ASPD (n = 25), alcoholics with depression (n = 24), alcoholics with neither ASPD nor depression, but who were allowed to have additional psychopathology (n = 130)
