Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is the second most common diagnosis among patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) in Europe and in the United States. The outcome of patients transplanted for ALD is at least as good as that for most other diagnoses and better than that for hepatitis C virus. In case of severe acute alcoholic hepatitis (AAH) non-responders to medical therapy, the reason for denying LT is that it requires abstinence from alcohol for six months before consideration for a transplant. A strict application of a period of abstinence as a policy for transplant eligibility is unfai

Korsakoff syndrome (KS) is characterized by dense anterograde and retrograde amnesia. There is often a temporal gradient to the retrograde amnesia, with earlier memories more readily recalled than recent memories. Executive functioning has also been found to be impaired in KS. However, research comparing executive functioning between chronic alcoholics (AL) and patients with KS has been relatively sparse to date. In a group comparison design, executive functioning in 15 KS patients and 16 chronic alcoholic patients was assessed using the Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome test

Idiopathic necrosis of the femoral head is already described associated with alcoholism. However, it is unusual to meet alcoholic patient with idiopathic necrosis of the femoral head in psychiatric hospital. One hundred patients admitted for alcohol withdrawal were followed for eight years. At the eight year mark, 25 percent had achieved stable abstinence of three years' duration or more, and 29 percent had died. Only 26 percent experienced continued serious problems with alcohol. Premorbid social stability and sustained abstinence made independent contributions to good psychosocial outcome at eight years. Premorbid social stability and Alcoholics Anonymous attendance made independent contributions to sustained abstinence. Review of these data and other major longitudinal studies suggests that fac

A survey of 123 Al-Anon wives in the Washington, D.C. area revealed that these women delayed an average of more than 7 years after the first occurrence of problem drinking before finally seeking help. The various drinking-related problems antecedent to the wives' seeking help clustered into four time periods composed of similar types of problems; (1) nonthreatening events, such as arrest, occurred 7 years prior to help seeking; (2) acts of physical violence, 5 years; (3) intervention by outside authorities, 3 years; and (4) recognition by significant others that the drinking was out of control

Many alcoholics come to the hospital denying their own drinking problems. So, in the initial treatment stage for alcoholics, it is very important to bring patients' attention to their denial. In those days, there were many kinds of treatment method to help them aware of patients' denial. For example, psycho-educational therapy, Japanese Naikan therapy, attendance to self-help group meetings, and so on. But I don't think that these are effective enough to help them aware of their drinking problems, especially denial. The purpose of my study is to develop the therapeutic intervention method (Bef

Comparison was made of treatment clients attending Narcotics Anonymous and/or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings less than weekly (n = 41) with treatment clients attending meetings at least three times a week (n = 30). The frequent attenders (attending an average of 30.6 meetings monthly) differed from non- and infrequent attenders (attending an average of 0.4 meetings monthly) in terms of histories of greater lifetime drug use, more arrests and treatment experiences, and an earlier age of first use of alcohol. Although the frequent attender was also older, age was not found to influence the differ

This review synthesizes the philosophy, development, history, and current status of the philosophy of social or community model of recovery and of Social Model Programs (SMPs) based on an analysis of the available literature, much of it outside traditional sources. The social-community model of recovery evolved out of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and has a distinctive program philosophy with different assumptions, knowledge, and practice than professionally based treatment models. SMPs began in the 1940s in California, evolving by the 1980s into a continuum of recovery services that are publicly

Every day, more than 700,000 people in the United States receive treatment for alcoholism. In recent years, much progress has been made in understanding how both psychological approaches and medications can help these patients achieve sobriety, including evaluation of existing treatment approaches and development of new ones. Continued research to refine therapies for alcoholism will have widespread benefits for alcohol-dependent people, for their families, and for society as a whole, which bears the weight of the enormous economic and social costs of problem drinking. This article reviews the

(1) We prepared a questionnaire modified from that of Edwards, G. et al, to investigate the factors influencing drinking behaviors. Responses of the questionnaire were filled out by the alcoholics, their families, and health care professionals in four psychiatric hospitals having intensive alcoholic rehabilitation programmes. Clinical course of them were traced back for at least two years. (2) We examined the relationship between the course of alcoholism and the differences in perceptions among alcoholics, their families, and health care professionals. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Serenity Lodge alcohol rehabilitation program by comparing a group of 137 men who entered the program with the same number of similar men who did not enter the program after an admission to a detoxification hospital. The residential program, for which people must pay board, is based on the AA philosophy and reality therapy. Follow-up interviews were conducted with three-quarters of the men in each group. Even after allowing for spontaneous remission as measured by the improvement in the control group, it was apparent that for a

The aim of this survey was to evaluate the distribution of pathological gamblers treated in an alcohol or drug addiction treatment program run by the Italian National Health Service providing assistance to alcohol and drug abusers in Venice (North east Italy) from September 1 to December 31, 2001. Each drug- or alcohol-dependent patient retained for treatment for at least one month was administrated an anonymous precoded questionnaire to collect personal and socio-demographic features. The South Oaks Gambling Screen is a 20-item questionnaire based on DSM-III criteria for pathological gambling. It may be self-administered or administered by nonprofessional or professional interviewers. A total of 1,616 subjects were involved in its development: 867 patients with diagnoses of substance abuse and pathological gambling, 213 members of Gamblers Anonymous, 384 university students, and 152 hospital employees. Independent validation by family members and counselors was obtained for the calibration sample, and internal consistency and test-retest reliability were established. The in

UNLABELLED: With the rise of opioid deaths and methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) being the "gold standard," evidence lacks the quality of life for those on Methadone.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop educational materials for communities and clinics about MMT and abstinence, utilizing the PhotoVoice technique to represent the voice of those on Methadone treatment (MMT) and abstinence for recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD). Participants shared firsthand experiences of life on Methadone and abstinence, resulting in a short video clip and a poster.

The evaluation and treatment of substance abusers are complicated tasks, requiring a multifaceted approach. In addition to the patient's substance abuse problems, a substantial minority appear to be suffering from concurrent, nondrug-related psychiatric disorders. The early identification of such individuals allows for the development of specific treatment strategies that address both the substance abuse and the associated nondrug psychopathology. On the other hand, attention to nondrug psychopathology should not preclude our simultaneously addressing the patient's substance abuse problem. Thu
