Diatoms often outnumber other eukaryotic algae in the oceans, especially in coastal environments characterized by frequent fluctuations in light intensity. The identities and operational mechanisms of regulatory factors governing diatom acclimation to high light stress remain largely elusive. Here, we identified the AUREO1c protein from the coastal diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum as a crucial regulator of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), a photoprotective mechanism that dissipates excess energy as heat. AUREO1c detects light stress using a light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) domain and directly acti

Little information is available on how nano-Fe2O3 substituted iron ions as a possible iron source impacting on algal growth and arsenate (As(V)) metabolism under dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) (D-glucose-6-phosphate (GP)) conditions. We investigated the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa and As(V) metabolism together with their metabolites in As(V) aquatic environments with nano-Fe2O3 and GP as the sole iron and P sources, respectively. Results showed that nano-Fe2O3 showed inhibitory effects on M. aeruginosa growth and microcystin (MCs) release under GP conditions in As(V) polluted water. T

Alternative proteins from plant, algal, fungal, and microbial sources are increasingly recognized for their potential to influence gut microbiota. However, the role of protein structure in shaping these interactions remains poorly understood. This review examines how key structural attributes of alternative proteins-including amino acid composition, folding characteristics, aggregation behavior, and enzymatic accessibility, govern gastrointestinal digestion. It also explores how these structural features affect microbial fermentation and the subsequent nutritional and functional outcomes. Stru

The light-harvesting complex (LHC) is an essential component in light energy capture and transduction to facilitate downstream photosynthetic reactions in plant and algal chloroplasts. The unicellular dinoflagellate alga Symbiodinium is an endosymbiont of cnidarian animals, including corals and sea anemones, and provides carbohydrates generated through photosynthesis to host animals. Although Symbiodinium possesses a unique LHC gene family, called chlorophyll a-chlorophyll c2-peridinin protein complex (acpPC), its genome-level diversity and evolutionary trajectories have not been investigated.

Pyrenoids are algal CO2-fixing organelles that mediate approximately one-third of global carbon fixation. Most pyrenoids are traversed by membranes that are thought to supply them with concentrated CO2. Despite the critical nature of these membranes for pyrenoid function, they are poorly understood, with few protein components known in any species. Here, we identify protein components of the pyrenoid-traversing membranes from the leading model alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, by affinity purification and mass spectrometry of membrane fragments. Our proteome includes previously known proteins a

The release of algal organic matter (AOM) during seasonal algal blooms increases the complexity and heterogeneity of natural organic matter (NOM) in water sources, altering its hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance and posing significant challenges to conventional water treatment processes. This study aims to verify whether the (Granular activated carbon) GAC selected for the adsorption of NOM in sand filtration effluent can adapt to water quality fluctuations caused by AOM release, and identify the criteria influencing GAC adsorption performance. Results indicated that external surface area, mesopo

The interactions between antibiotics and microorganisms have attracted enormous research attentions. In this study, we investigated the effects of two typical aminoglycoside antibiotics on the aggregation of the model cyanobacterium, Synechococcus elongatus, and the dominating strain in algal blooms, Microcystis aeruginosa, via the analysis of zeta potentials, hydrophobicity, and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion. The results showed that low-level antibiotics promoted the aggregation of S. elongatus and M. aeruginosa by 40 and 18% under 0.10 and 0.02 μg/mL of kanamycin, respec

Lakes are important sources of greenhouse gases, yet bloom-driven emissions are often assessed from total algal biomass, ignoring algal functional composition. This study examined how cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa), green algae (Chlorella vulgaris), diatoms (Cyclotella meneghiniana), and dominance-based mixtures regulate DOM transformation and CO2/N2O production under eutrophic conditions. It integrated to pure-culture experiments, water-sediment microcosms, sterilization controls, DOM fluorescence spectroscopy, gas monitoring, and metagenomics to resolve an algae-DOM-microbe-gas casca

Limnospira maxima has been adapted to grow in high salinity and in an economically alternative medium using industrial-grade fertilizers under harsh environmental conditions in Saudi Arabia. A sequence of scaling-up processes, from the laboratory to large-scale open raceways, was conducted along with gradual adaptation to environmental stress (salinity, light, temperature, pH). High biomass concentration at harvest point and areal productivity were achieved during the harsh summer season (1.122 g L-1 and 60.35 g m-2 day-1, respectively). The average protein content was found to be above 40 % o

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating global health threat, necessitating the discovery of novel antimicrobial agents. Algae-derived proteins and peptides have gained increasing attention for their bioactive potential; however, standardized protocols for investigating antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in green algae, particularly Tetraspora sp. CU2551, remain limited. This protocol describes a step-by-step workflow for the isolation, purification, and characterization of antimicrobial intact proteins from the green alga Tetraspora sp. CU2551. The procedure integrates optimized protein ex

Apicomplexan parasites cause a variety of important infectious diseases, including malaria, toxoplasma encephalitis, and severe diarrhea due to Cryptosporidium Most apicomplexans depend on an organelle called the apicoplast which is derived from a red algal endosymbiont. The apicoplast is essential for the parasite as the compartment of fatty acid, heme, and isoprenoid biosynthesis. The majority of the approximate 500 apicoplast proteins are nucleus encoded and have to be imported across the four membranes that surround the apicoplast. Import across the second outermost membrane of the apicopl

Algal photosynthesis contributes to half of global carbon fixation and is enhanced by CO2-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs), which depend on the pyrenoid organelle in eukaryotic species. Despite its importance, the coordination between photosynthesis and other inorganic-carbon using pathways like fatty acid biosynthesis (FAS) remains underexplored. Here, we investigate this interplay using the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. We find that subunits of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase, key in FAS, form protein condensates at the pyrenoid periphery under limiting CO2 and redistribute throughout the

While Chlamydomonas is a widely used model organism, nuclear transgene expression in this system is well documented to face notorious difficulties. Here, we show that 5' untranslated region (UTR) introns can play a positive role in reducing gene silencing. By screening promoter-5' UTR complexes containing introns (PUTRis) from highly expressed genes, we identify many candidates that outperform the two most widely used promoters, HR and PSAD. Truncation analyses reveal that intron removal increases gene silencing to a similar extent as promoter deletion. These 5' UTR introns promote open chroma

Rising global meat demand and nutritional awareness have fuelled interest in sustainable, ethical protein sources. Animal agriculture generates greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, and water scarcity, creating a need for plant-based meat alternatives. While plant sources face drawbacks such as incomplete amino acid profiles, anti-nutritional factors, and land requirements. Algae emerge as a superior option, delivering exceptionally high protein content (up to 70% dry weight), complete essential amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, polysaccharides, and potent antioxidants, surpass

Macrolide antibiotics are common contaminants in the aquatic environment. They are toxic to a wide range of primary producers, inhibiting the algal growth and further hindering the delivery of several ecosystem services. Yet the molecular mechanisms of macrolides in algae remain undetermined. The objectives of this study were therefore to: 1. evaluate whether macrolides at the environmentally relevant level inhibit the growth of algae; and 2. test the hypothesis that macrolides bind to ribosome and inhibit protein translocation in algae, as it does in bacteria. In this study, transcriptomic an

This study focused on a culture system of aerial microalgae with the decomposition of casein protein for obtaining bioactive compounds such as peptides with inhibitory activity against angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). The aerial microalga Vischeria helvetica exhibited growth in Bold's basal medium supplemented with casein protein as nitrogen source. The algal cells secreted protease and amino oxidase into the medium, and ammonium ions as a nitrogen source was produced by the conjugated-enzyme reaction. Furthermore, a bioactive peptide with ACE-inhibitory activity was efficiently produced f

The apicoplast, a peculiar organelle of red algal origin surrounded by four membranes, is important for several metabolic processes in the malaria parasite, including isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) and coenzyme A (CoA) biosynthesis. Transporters are required to provide substrates and export products for these metabolic pathways and are therefore excellent novel drug targets. On the basis of known apicoplast pathways, we discuss which functions are expected to be fulfilled by the Plasmodium apicoplast transportome, which comprises 11 confirmed and 17 putative apicoplast transporters identified

BACKGROUND: The oomycete Aphanomyces astaci is regarded as the causative agent of crayfish plague and represents an evident hazard for European crayfish species. Native crayfish populations infected with this pathogen suffer up to 100% mortality. The existence of multiple transmission paths necessitates the development of a reliable, robust and efficient test to detect the pathogen. Currently, A. astaci is diagnosed by a PCR-based assay that suffers from cross-reactivity to other species. We developed an alternative closed-tube assay for A. astaci, which achieves robustness through simultaneou

Prymnesium parvum is one of the main contributors to harmful algal blooms, mainly because of its ability to produce prymnesin, a toxin involved in marine specie deaths occurring in these events. At the same time, scientific works are reporting the existence of microalgae-derived extracellular vesicles in different microalgal strains, which as in other species participate in different cellular processes and intra- and intercellular communication. Now, knowing that each of the toxic Prymnesium parvum strains produce one of the three known types of prymnesin, strains PPSR01, SAG 18.97 and UTEX-27
