Implementation of intussusceptive microvascular growth in the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM): 1. pillar formation by folding of the capillary wall.

Intussusceptive microvascular growth is a new mode of capillary network growth originally described in the lungs of rabbits and rats. It constitutes an alternative to endothelial sprouting. The capillary network grows by insertion of new intercapillary meshes with dimensions around 1.5 microns called tissue pillars or posts. In a recent investigation, growth by intussusception was demonstrated in the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM). In the present study the first of several modes of its implementation can now be presented in the CAM by in vivo video microscopy and analyses of light and

Intussusceptive arborization contributes to vascular tree formation in the chick chorio-allantoic membrane.

Various reports indicate that the process of intussusceptive microvascular growth (IMG) plays a crucial role in capillary network formation of the chorio-allantoic membrane (CAM). In the present study we demonstrate by methylmethacrylate (Mercox) casting and in vivo time-lapse observations that intussusception, i.e. insertion of transcapillary tissue pillars, is also strongly involved in vascular tree formation, a process we refer to as intussusceptive arborization (IAR). From day 7 to day 14 of incubation, several arterial and venous branching generations arise from the capillary plexus. The

Urachal adenocarcinoma: a rare case report.

Urachal carcinoma is a rare and aggressive form of bladder cancer involving the urachus, a fibrous remnant of the allantois that extends from the bladder to the umbilicus. We report this case of a 49-year-old women with primary urachal adenocarcinoma treated with partial cystectomy who relapsed 5 years after surgery with lung metastases. This patient with unremarkable medical history presented with abdominal discomfort and a palpable pelvic mass. Follow-up imaging reveals a large mass on the dome of the bladder extending from the urachus. Subsequent ultrasound-guided biopsy result was suggesti

Brachyury drives formation of a distinct vascular branchpoint critical for fetal-placental arterial union in the mouse gastrula.

How the fetal-placental arterial connection is made and positioned relative to the embryonic body axis, thereby ensuring efficient and directed blood flow to and from the mother during gestation, is not known. Here we use a combination of genetics, timed pharmacological inhibition in living mouse embryos, and three-dimensional modeling to link two novel architectural features that, at present, have no status in embryological atlases. The allantoic core domain (ACD) is the extraembryonic extension of the primitive streak into the allantois, or pre-umbilical tissue; the vessel of confluence (VOC

18F-FDG PET/CT in a Case of Urothelial Carcinoma in the Urachus Presenting as Colon Cancer.

Urachal cancer arises from an embryologic remnant of the urogenital sinus and allantois and accounts for approximately 1% of bladder malignancies. The most encountered histologic subtype is adenocarcinoma. We present a 76-year-old man suspected to have an advanced sigmoid cancer infiltrating nearby organs. A supplemental 18F-FDG PET/CT showed high tracer uptake in a tumorous process coherent with the dome of the bladder wall involving the sigmoid colon. Cystoscopy revealed a normal bladder wall, except for a small edematous area in the anterior bladder. Biopsies from the sigmoid colon and tran

Pyourachus: study of two cases.

The urachus, or median umbilical ligament, is a midline tubular structure that extends upward from the anterior dome of the bladder toward, the umbilicus and represents the vestigial remnant of at least two embryonic structures, the cloaca and the allantois. The tubular urachus normally involutes before birth, remaining as a fibrous band, however its persistence can give rise to various clinical problems, not only in infants and children but also in adults. We report two cases of pyourachus at our institute with a review of the clinical presentation, imaging findings and surgical management. B

Primary immature teratoma of the liver in an adult: Case report.

Teratoma is an uncommon germ cell tumor and develops from at least 2 of the 3 germ cell layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. The origin of teratoma is primordial germ cells that migrate from the allantois to the gonadal ridges during embryogenesis. The teratomas can be intragonadal or extragonadal. Primary extragonadal teratoma is defined as if there is no evidence of a primary tumor in the testicles or ovaries. Common extragonadal sites include the anterior mediastinum, retroperitoneum, sacral region, and intracranial cavity. Primary intrahepatic teratomas are extremely rare, accounting

A Rare Case of Allantoic Cyst with Patent Urachus in Fetus with a Microdeletion in 1q21.1q21.2 Region.

An allantoic cyst is a rare malformation with a frequency of 3 in 1,000,000 that may be seen antenatally by ultrasound assessment when the connection between the cloaca (future bladder) and the allantois fails to regress. A patent urachus that presents as a cyst (allantoic) is usually considered not to be associated with chromosomal abnormalities, but if it is not repaired after birth this leads to complications such as urinary tract infections and stone formation. We present a case of a fetus diagnosed with allantoic cyst at the first trimester ultrasound assessment at 12 weeks gestation. The

Sonographic imaging of the bovine fetus.

Transrectal sonography documenting the anatomical features of 71 bovine fetuses was performed between Day 30 and 10 mo of gestation. Sector scanners, which have a wider field of view into the depth of the uterus, were used, and it was found that most macroscopic organs were visible with B-scan ultrasound. The first organ detected around the end of the first month of pregnancy was the heart. The orbit, the stomach and the braincase were identified at Day 40. Most bones of the skeleton and the scrotum appeared around Month 3. Characteristic sonographic images of the head, neck, vertebral column,

[Infected urachal cyst].

The urachus is a vestigial remnant of the cloaca and allantois. It is usually obliterated at early postnatal life. When this obliteration is incomplete, in addition to congenital urachal anomalies such as patent urachus, umblical-urachal sinus, vesico-urachal diverticulum, and urachal cyst, acquired urachal pathologies as infections and neoplasms can emerge. In this case report we will evaluate an infected urachal cyst established in a 26 year-old female. She presented with complaints of abdominal pain and umblical discharge. suprapubic sensitivity, abdominal mass with an overlying hyperemic s

Allantoic cyst - an unusual umbilical cord swelling.

We report a baby with an unusual umbilical cord swelling. On the antenatal scans, a cystic area within the umbilical cord near its insertion onto the abdominal wall was detected. Postnatally an unusually thick umbilical cord with a yellow fluid filled cyst at the base was noted. The fluid from the cyst was confirmed as urine and ultrasound confirmed patent urachus. The baby underwent a cystoscopy and excision of patent urachus with associated allantoic cyst. Allantoic cyst is a rare swelling formed at the base of umbilicus associated with a patent urachus which results from an allantoic remnan

Complications during gestation in the cow.

Uterine torsion and vaginal prolapse are accidents of gestation; this paper first reviews the predisposition, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of uterine torsion, and the predisposition, pathogenesis, symptoms, treatment, and prognosis of vaginal prolapse during late gestation in the cow. Other noninfectious complications of gestation are either fetal or placental in origin. Two relatively unusual fetal problems, mummification and maceration, are also discussed, followed by a comparison of two hydropic conditions (hydrallantois and hydramnios). Hydrops allantois, primarily a placental proble

Two related cases of cerebellar abnormality in equine fetuses associated with hydrops of fetal membranes.

Hydrops allantois was diagnosed in two Haflinger mares with severe abdominal distension. Both mares were seven months pregnant. Abortion was induced with two injections of prostaglandin six hours apart followed by further manual dilation of the cervix and administration of oxytocin the next day. There were 90 and 95 litres of fluid, respectively, in the allantoic cavities which resembled extracellular fluid with regard to concentrations of urea, creatinine, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate and chloride, but not total protein. Both fetuses had severe brain abnormalities which we

Hydrallantois in a ewe.

Hydrallantois was detected in a pregnant ewe by physical examination and ultrasonographic evaluation. Clinical signs of disease included acute progressive bilateral abdominal distention, anorexia, and recumbency. Right-flank celiotomy and cesarean section were used to alleviate the condition. Post-operatively, in addition to supportive treatment, oxytocin and fenprostalene (a long-acting prostaglandin) were administered to decrease the likelihood or severity of hydrallantoic sequelae.

Angiostatic activity and metabolism of cortisol in the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of the chick embryo.

There is considerable interest in the discovery of compounds which inhibit angiogenesis dependent (neovascular) diseases. The chick embryo, due to the rapid development of an extensive vascular capillary network in the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), has been used extensively as a model for studying angiogenesis. Angiostatic steroids are a new class of compounds which inhibit the growth of new capillaries in the chick CAM and in other models of neovascularization. Despite the potential therapeutic importance of these compounds, little is known about the ability of the CAM to metabolize these s

[Three cases of urachal cyst in adults].

The urachus is a thick fibrous cord that appears in the fifth month of pregnancy as a result of the allantois obliteration. Urachal cysts occur as a result of a defect in the obliteration of the duct, anomaly detected mainly in children and very rarely in adults. We present three cases of urachal cysts in adults, one of them detected during the study of abdominal pain and the other two, found incidentally during the study of other pathologies. In any case the possibility of urachal cysts was clinically suspected. Histologically, these lesions are lined by epithelium of urothelial type with exp

[Carcinoma of the urachus].

The urachus is an embryological structure originating from the allantois and situated in Retzius' space. Neoplasms originating from the urachus are very rare. They become clinically manifest late in the course of the disease. Deformation of the apex of the bladder and supravesical calcifications are described as radiological findings but these are of limited diagnostic value and should be supplemented by ultrasonic scanning, computed tomography and possibly by magnetic resonance scanning which will provide information about the extent of the disease. The final diagnosis is based on the macrosc

Non-invasive, low-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma in the urachus.

The urachus is a duct connecting the allantois with the fetal bladder, forming the median umbilical ligament; it usually obliterates during fetal life. Carcinomas arising from urachal remnants are rare but associated with a poor prognosis. We present one case of non-invasive urachal papillary urothelial carcinoma, and through a systematic literature search, we identified 12 additional cases of urachal urothelial carcinoma reported in English literature in the past 20 years. The cases were compared according to the Sheldon Staging System and the Mayo Staging System presented by Ashley et al in
