Tailoring communication in consultations with women from high risk breast cancer families.

This multicentre study examined the influence of patient demographic, disease status and psychological variables on clinical geneticists/genetic counsellors (consultants) behaviours in initial consultations with women from high-risk breast cancer families. One hundred and fifty-eight women completed a pre-clinic self-report questionnaire. The consultations were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim and coded. Consultants did not vary their behaviour according to women's expectations. However, significantly more aspects of genetic testing were discussed with women who were affected with breast cance

Impact of disinvestment from weekend allied health services across acute medical and surgical wards: 2 stepped-wedge cluster randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Disinvestment (removal, reduction, or reallocation) of routinely provided health services can be difficult when there is little published evidence examining whether the services are effective or not. Evidence is required to understand if removing these services produces outcomes that are inferior to keeping such services in place. However, organisational imperatives, such as budget cuts, may force healthcare providers to disinvest from these services before the required evidence becomes available. There are presently no experimental studies examining the effectiveness of allied hea

Artificial intelligence integration in allied health professions: A comprehensive review of educational, research, and clinical applications.

BackgroundArtificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare delivery across multiple disciplines. Allied health professions-including diagnostic medical sonography (DMS), health informatics (HI), medical billing and coding (MBC), midwifery (MW), occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and physician assistant (PA) practice-represent critical yet understudied domains of AI integration. Understanding of how AI technologies are adopted across these professions is essential for supporting ethical and effective implementation.ObjectiveThis review synthesizes the current liter

Decision making biases in the allied health professions: A systematic scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive and other biases can influence the quality of healthcare decision making. While substantial research has explored how biases can lead to diagnostic or other errors in medicine, fewer studies have examined how they impact the decision making of other healthcare professionals. This scoping review aimed to identify and synthesise a broad range of research investigating whether decisions made by allied health professionals are influenced by cognitive, affective or other biases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in five electronic databases.

A 7-step consultation plan for health care workers and hairdressers.

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases are among the most common occupational disorders in health care workers and hairdressers. Optimal prevention methods make it possible for more individuals to remain active in their profession. We devised a 7-step consultation plan which was employed in a standard fashion and then evaluated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 264 employees were evaluated in the Education and Support Center of the German Accident Prevention and Insurance Association in the Health and Welfare Services (BGW schu.ber.z Berlin) from 2003 to 2005 in a standardized manner. Included were detailed history,

Measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella immunization status of first responders--a policy proposal.

The responsibility of occupational health nursing often extends to the communities that workers serve. This is especially true for first responders (i.e., firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians) and their measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella status.

An exploratory study of time use of allied health clinicians in research roles and their potential to contribute to student placements.

INTRODUCTION: Student placements provide a valuable opportunity to integrate theory into practice and prepare for future work roles in allied health. Innovative student placement models are required to meet placement demands and the changing scope of practice. The potential for placements in clinical research settings, in which the student is working alongside and learning from allied health clinicians working in research roles, remains under-explored. OBJECTIVE: To explore the time use and activities completed by Australian allied health clinicians employed in research roles and explore how

Occupational hazards in hospitals: risk of infection.

In this review of the risk of infection to hospital staff, attention is drawn to the continuing risk presented by hepatitis B and pulmonary tuberculosis, which are more common than diseases such as typhoid fever, brucellosis, histoplasmosis, whooping cough, infectious gastroenteritis, measles, and parotiditis. Other items considered include the susceptibility of female hospital staff to rubella and the importance of their undergoing screening and vaccination; the risks currently presented by epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and by herpes viruses (herpes simplex, varicella zoster, and cytomegalovi

Implementation of multidisciplinary advice to allied health care professionals regarding the management of their patients with neuromuscular diseases.

PURPOSE: Patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) do not always receive appropriate allied health care. This is partially because of the large heterogeneity among these conditions, some of which are quite rare. Individual allied health care professionals, therefore, have relatively little opportunity to develop relevant experience with these patients. To overcome this problem, we developed specialist multidisciplinary advice regarding management of patients with NMD for occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT) and speech therapy (ST) in a primary care or rehabilitation setting. The risk of hepatitis B infection among health professionals in the United States: a review.

Many physicians, dentists, and allied health personnel sustain occupational exposures to blood and other body fluids that increase their risk of contracting type B viral hepatitis. Overall, the risk of hepatitis B among persons employed in health-related fields is estimated to be approximately four times that in the general adult population. Studies on the incidence of infection and the prevalence of hepatitis B serologic markers have further defined risk in specific occupational categories and work activities. Physicians and dentists are five to ten times more likely than the general adult po
