Hypopigmentation in mantled howler monkeys Alouatta palliata (gray 1849): First documented cases of whole-body leucism in South America.

The existence of hypopigmentation like leucism is the result of genetic anomalies that might be enhanced by external factors such as pollution. This anomaly may reduce survival rates. Leucism has been recorded in wildlife, but overall, it is considered very rare. There have been few records of mantled howler monkeys with leucism in Mexico and Costa Rica, but whole-body leucism in howler monkeys from South America was unknown. In this article, we report for the first-time documented cases of whole-body leucism in young individuals of mantled howler monkeys Alouatta palliata in an isolated reman

Bertiella sp. (Meyner, 1895) infection of Alouatta caraya (Humboldt, 1812) in urban and natural environments in Ñeembucú, southwest Paraguay.

Bertiella sp., a cestode known to infect a variety of hosts, including nonhuman primates and humans, was identified in Paraguay as early as 1895, but no systematic analysis of wild primates' gastrointestinal parasites has ever been carried out in Paraguay. Increased urbanization in southwest Paraguay has pushed the Paraguayan howler monkey (Alouatta caraya) into anthropogenic habitats, particularly in the city of Pilar (Ñeembucú department), giving rise to greater potential for zoonotic transmission between wild primates and humans. From July to December 2018, fecal samples were noninvasively

Evaluation of A Combination of Ketamine and Dexmedetomidine as A Field Anesethetic Protocol for Immobilization of Golden-Mantled Howler Monkeys (Alouatta palliata palliata).

BACKGROUND: The golden-mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata palliata) is an endangered primate experiencing acute population declines for reasons not fully identified. Health and disease monitoring are critical factors for understanding animal and ecosystem health, yet limited research has been achieved in this species due to difficulties in successful immobilization and sample collection. The purpose of this research is to investigate the efficacy of combined ketamine and dexmedetomidine in providing safe field anesthesia for golden-mantled howler monkeys (A. palliata palliata) to perform

Opportunistic Screening for Bone Demineralization by Whole Body CT in a Red-Handed Howler Monkey (Alouatta belzebul) Under Human Care.

An eight-year-old male red-handed howler monkey (Alouatta belzebul) underwent whole-body computed tomography for gastrointestinal signs. Quantitative CT of the lumbar vertebrae opportunistically revealed severe bone hypoattenuation, demineralization, and deteriorated trabecular architecture. This incidental diagnosis of metabolic bone disease was directly attributed to chronic inadequate management conditions, specifically a severely imbalanced diet and insufficient sunlight exposure in captivity.

Group size and composition of brown howler monkeys (Alouatta guariba) in three fragments of Araucaria Pine Forest in southern Brazil.

Brown howler monkeys (Alouatta guariba) are increasingly threatened by habitat loss, sylvatic yellow fever, and negative human interactions. In southern Brazil, brown howlers still inhabit some fragments of the endangered Araucaria Pine Forest (APF), but basic information on their social organization remains scarce. We surveyed brown howler monkey groups to assess their group size and composition in three nearby similarly sized peri-urban APF fragments in Curitiba, southern Brazil. Using Generalized Linear Mixed Models, we investigated whether the number of males, females and immatures could b

Population densities of black-and-gold howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya) in northeastern Argentina and the possible influence of a yellow fever outbreak.

Habitat disturbances, including stochastic events such as disease outbreaks, can significantly affect primate populations by reducing population density and demographic structure. The black-and-gold howler monkey (Alouatta caraya, IUCN: Near Threatened) is the southernmost species of the genus Alouatta and inhabits a variety of environments throughout its distributional range. In Argentina, A. caraya is classified as vulnerable, but following a yellow fever outbreak (YFO) between 2007 and 2009, the subpopulations in the province of Misiones were reclassified as Endangered. This study provides,

The relative effects of reproductive condition, stress, and seasonality on patterns of parasitism in wild female black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra).

Parasitic infections in wildlife are shaped by host-related traits including individual reproductive condition. It has been argued that female primates are more susceptible to infectious diseases during pregnancy due to short-term changes in immune function that result in reduced ability to combat infections. Likewise, lactation, which is the most energetically expensive state, may affect immunity and infection risk due to tradeoffs between milk production and maintenance of immune function. Here, we examine the degree to which parasite prevalence and parasite richness are affected by female r

Demographic Structure of Black and Gold Howler Monkeys (Alouatta caraya) in Northeastern Argentina: A Post-Disturbance Baseline Across Contrasting Landscapes.

Yellow fever (YF) outbreaks and anthropogenic fires are major sources of mortality in Neotropical primates, yet their legacy effects on population structure and reproductive output remain poorly quantified. We conducted a comparative assessment of black and gold howler monkey population (Alouatta caraya) across three population contexts in northeastern Argentina: (1) Yellow fever-affected, (2) Yellow fever-free populations, (3) a fire-affected population in Iberá wetlands. Group size was similar across sites, with a median of 9 individuals (range: 3-15). Multimale-multifemale groups predominat

HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF GOLDEN-MANTLED HOWLER MONKEYS (ALOUATTA PALLIATA PALLIATA) IN DRY FOREST FROM THE NORTH PACIFIC COAST, COSTA RICA.

The golden-mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata palliata) represents an excellent sentinel species for use in One Health modeling because of its extensive natural range, regular contact with humans and domestic animals, and susceptibility to zoonotic diseases. The purpose of this research is to establish baseline health assessments for free ranging golden-mantled howler monkeys in Marino Las Baulas National Park, Costa Rica. In April 2013, seven free ranging golden-mantled howler monkeys were anesthetized for physical examinations and biological sample collection, including blood for hemat

CAMPYLOBACTER HYOINTESTINALIS ISOLATION FROM HOWLER (ALOUATTA CARAYA) AND SPIDER MONKEYS (ATELES FUSCICEPS ROBUSTUS) AT A ZOOLOGIC FACILITY IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS.

Campylobacter hyointestinalis was initially isolated from an asymptomatic black howler monkey (Alouatta caraya) in a routine fecal culture examination. Fecal cultures from other individuals in this group and an adjacently housed black-headed spider monkey (Ateles fusciceps robustus) group recovered C. hyointestinalis from all but one of the individuals sampled (1.1 spider monkeys and 2.1 howler monkeys). Concurrently, one spider monkey presented with acute onset severe rectal prolapse and diarrhea. Whole-genome sequencing results of C. hyointestinalis isolates from all individuals were homolog

New Molecular Data on Filaria and its Wolbachia from Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta macconnelli) in French Guiana-A Preliminary Study.

Previous studies have reported filarial parasites of the genus Dipetalonema and Mansonella from French Guiana monkeys, based on morphological taxonomy. In this study, we screened blood samples from nine howler monkeys (Alouatta macconnelli) for the presence of filaria and Wolbachia DNA. The infection rates were 88.9% for filaria and 55.6% for wolbachiae. The molecular characterization, based on the 18S gene of filariids, revealed that A. macconnelli are infected with at least three species (Mansonella sp., Brugia sp. and an unidentified Onchocercidae species.). Since the 18S and cox1 generic p

Positively selected variants in functionally important regions of TLR7 in Alouatta guariba clamitans with yellow fever virus exposure in Northern Argentina.

BACKGROUND: In 2007-2009, a major yellow fever virus (YFV) outbreak in Northern Argentina decimated the local howler monkey (Alouatta) population. AIMS: To evaluate whether the surviving howler monkeys possess advantageous genetic variants inherited from monkeys alive prior to the YFV outbreak, we explored the relationship between Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7 and TLR8 gene variation and YFV susceptibility. METHODS: We used samples from Alouatta individuals in Misiones, Argentina alive before the YFV outbreak, individuals that died during the outbreak, and individuals that survived the outbreak

Characterization of Blastocystis species infection in humans and mantled howler monkeys, Alouatta palliata aequatorialis, living in close proximity to one another.

This study characterizes Blastocystis species infections in humans and mantled howler monkeys, Alouatta palliata aequatorialis, living in close proximity to one another in northwestern Ecuador. Blastocystis species were identified from 58 of 96 (60.4 %) mantled howler monkey fecal samples, and 44 of 55 human fecal samples (81.5 %) by polymerase chain reaction. Using single-stranded conformation polymorphism, we were able to efficiently separate and sequence subtypes (STs) within mixed samples without the need for cloning. Blastocystis ST1, ST2, and ST3 were found in people, and two individuals

Wischnewski Spots and Black Oesophagus in Suspected Fatal Hypothermia in a Brown Howler Monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) and a Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Fatal hypothermia represents a diagnostic challenge in veterinary pathology. Wischnewski spots (WS) and black oesophagus (BO) have been described in human cases of fatal hypothermia but rarely in animals. We now describe WS and BO in suspected fatal hypothermia in a free-ranging brown howler monkey (Alouatta guariba clamitans) and a pet rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Both animals had dark spots resembling WS on the gastric mucosa and the monkey also had BO with haematin deposition. In both cases, stress factors and relatively cold environmental conditions were present prior to death.

Capture of Alouatta guariba clamitans for the surveillance of sylvatic yellow fever and zoonotic malaria: Which is the best strategy in the tropical Atlantic Forest?

Howler monkey capture is an arduous and expensive task requiring trained and specialized professionals. We compared strategies and methods to most efficiently capture Alouatta guariba clamitans in remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro and its bordering states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. We tested whether or not the success of expeditions in the forest with anesthetic darts, nets, and baited traps differed with and without the support of an information network, a contact chain built with key institutions and inhabitants to continuously monitor howler monkey presence. Escherichia coli Carrying Antimicrobial Resistance in Rehabilitating Bolivian Red Howler Monkeys (Alouatta sara): A Pre-Release Risk in the Peruvian Amazon.

The release of rehabilitated wildlife can introduce antimicrobial resistance (AMR) into wild ecosystems. We examined AMR in Escherichia coli isolated from 44 Bolivian red howler monkeys (Alouatta sara) at a rescue center in Madre de Dios, Peru. Fecal samples were collected noninvasively and processed for E. coli isolation. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing against 12 antibiotics was performed and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production was phenotypically confirmed. Multidrug resistance (MDR) and the multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index were calculated. We isolated E. coli f
