The occipital alpha rhythm related to the "migraine cycle" and headache burden: a blinded, controlled longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Neurophysiological studies have shown a fluctuating neural dysfunction in migraine. This pathophysiological feature has not previously been investigated by quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG). The alpha rhythm is especially interesting, because it is influenced by ischemia and neuronal dysfunction within the posterior circulation area. METHODS: We investigated alpha peak frequency, variability, peak power and asymmetry in 41 migraineurs and 32 controls. Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded on three random days and retrospectively classified as preattack, attack, postatt

Resting-state EEG alpha rhythm spectral power in children with specific language impairment: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: This study investigated EEG alpha rhythm spectral power in children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and compared it to typically developing children to better understand the electrophysiological characteristics of this disorder. Specifically, we explored resting-state EEG, because there are studies that point to it being linked to speech and language development. METHODS: EEG recordings of 30 children diagnosed with specific language impairment and 30 typically developing children, aged 4.0-6.11 years, were carried out under eyes closed and eyes open conditions. Differences i

Ipsilateral preictal alpha rhythm attenuation (IPARA): An EEG sign of side of seizure onset in temporal lobe epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Identification of the seizure onset zone is critically important for outlining the surgical plan in the treatment of pharmacoresistant focal epilepsy. In patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), bilateral ictal scalp EEG changes frequently occur and can make lateralization of the seizure onset zone difficult. We investigated the incidence and clinical utility of unilateral preictal alpha rhythm attenuation as a lateralizing sign of seizure onset in TLE. METHODS: Scalp EEG recordings of the seizures acquired during presurgical video-EEG monitoring of 57 consecutive patients with TL

Lack of effects of low frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on alpha rhythm phase synchronization in migraine patients.

The study aimed to test the modulation induced by 1 Hz repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) of the occipital cortex on the alpha phase synchronization under repetitive flash stimuli in 15 migraine without aura patients compared to 10 controls. The EEG was recorded by 7 channels, while flash stimuli were delivered at 9, 18, 21 and 24 Hz in basal, rTMS (15 min of 1 Hz stimulation of the occipital cortex) and sham conditions. Migraine patients displayed increased alpha-band phase synchronization under visual stimulation, while an overall desynchronizing effect was evident in contro

Dissociated amplitude and phase effects of alpha oscillation in a nested structure of rhythm- and sequence-based temporal expectation.

The human brain can utilize various information to form temporal expectations and optimize perceptual performance. Here we show dissociated amplitude and phase effects of prestimulus alpha oscillation in a nested structure of rhythm- and sequence-based expectation. A visual stream of rhythmic stimuli was presented in a fixed sequence such that their temporal positions could be predicted by either the low-frequency rhythm, the sequence, or the combination. The behavioral modeling indicated that rhythmic and sequence information additively led to increased accumulation speed of sensory evidence

Mindfulness starts with the body: somatosensory attention and top-down modulation of cortical alpha rhythms in mindfulness meditation.

Using a common set of mindfulness exercises, mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) have been shown to reduce distress in chronic pain and decrease risk of depression relapse. These standardized mindfulness (ST-Mindfulness) practices predominantly require attending to breath and body sensations. Here, we offer a novel view of ST-Mindfulness's somatic focus as a form of training for optimizing attentional modulation of 7-14 Hz alpha rhythms that play a key role in filtering inputs to primary sensory neocortex and organizing the flow of sensory i

On the role of prestimulus alpha rhythms over occipito-parietal areas in visual input regulation: correlation or causation?

The posterior alpha rhythm (8-14 Hz), originating in occipito-parietal areas through thalamocortical generation, displays characteristics of visual activity in anticipation of visual events. Posterior alpha power is influenced by visual spatial attention via top-down control from higher order attention areas such as the frontal eye field. It covaries with visual cortex excitability, as tested through transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and predicts the perceptual fate of a forthcoming visual stimulus. Yet, it is still unknown whether the nature of the relationship between this prestimulus

Pretraining alpha rhythm enhancement by neurofeedback facilitates short-term perceptual learning and improves visual acuity by facilitated consolidation.

INTRODUCTION: Learning through perceptual training using the Gabor patch (GP) has attracted attention as a new vision restoration technique for myopia and age-related deterioration of visual acuity (VA). However, the task itself is monotonous and painful and requires numerous training sessions and some time before being effective, which has been a challenge for its widespread application. One effective means of facilitating perceptual learning is the empowerment of EEG alpha rhythm in the sensory cortex before neurofeedback (NF) training; however, there is a lack of evidence for VA. METHODS:

Differences in saliva collection location and disparities in baseline and diurnal rhythms of alpha-amylase: a preliminary note of caution.

Identified in the early 1980s as a surrogate marker of the sympathetic nervous system component of the stress response, there has been renewed interest in measuring salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) to test biosocial models of stress vulnerability. This brief report presents studies that document that oral fluids from the parotid and submandibular gland areas had higher sAA values than did whole saliva specimens, and sAA values in whole saliva were higher than levels measured in oral fluids from the sublingual gland area. sAA in oral fluids from the parotid and submandibular gland areas showed the

Genetic association of apolipoprotein E genotype with EEG alpha rhythm slowing and functional brain network alterations during normal aging.

The ε4 allele of the apolipoprotein E (APOE4+) genotype is a major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the mechanisms underlying its influence remain incompletely understood. The study aimed to investigate the possible effect of the APOE genotype on spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha characteristics, resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) connectivity (rsFC) in large brain networks and the interrelation of alpha rhythm and rsFC characteristics in non-demented adults during aging. We examined the EEG alpha subband's relative power, individual alpha peak frequency (IAPF)

Simultaneous EEG/functional magnetic resonance imaging at 4 Tesla: correlates of brain activity to spontaneous alpha rhythm during relaxation.

: Simultaneous EEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging have been applied to the study of brain states associated with alpha waves using a magnetic field strength of 1.5 Tesla and has been shown in recent years to be feasible up to 3 Tesla for other applications. This study demonstrates this technique's continued viability at a field strength of 4 Tesla, affording a proportionally greater sensitivity to changes in Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) signal. In addition, for the study of alpha correlations, the authors used a larger number of subjects and scanning sessions than in the prev

[Characteristics of the frequency component of EEG alpha rhythm of patients with neurosis-like schizophrenia (based on spectral analysis data)].

In 20 patients with neurosis-like schizophrenia and in 10 healthy subjects the authors, using the spectral analysis, assessed the composition of the alpha-range of the baseline EEG and studied the peculiarities of the frequency components of alpha-rhythm in various states. The patients were characterized by multimodality of the baseline EEG. The patients (versus the normal subjects) presented significantly different types of response of the main frequency components of EEG alpha-rhythm to the hyperventilation test.

Contrastive effects of prostaglandin F2 alpha on normal cardiac rhythm and ouabain-induced cardiac arrhythmias in cats: possible neural basis.

The effects of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) on normal cardiac rhythm and ouabain-induced cardiac arrhythmias were investigated in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. PGF2 alpha (1-16 micrograms/kg i.v. bolus) produced ventricular arrhythmias and few incidences of AV conduction disturbances in normal cats. Changes in heart rate and blood pressure caused by PGF2 alpha in normal cats were complex, namely a decrease, an increase, or an initial decrease followed by an increase. Bilateral vagotomy antagonized the ventricular arrhythmias, AV conduction disturbances and hemodynamic changes produced

Testing the effect of tACS over parietal cortex in modulating endogenous alpha rhythm and temporal integration windows in visual perception.

Neural oscillations in the alpha band (8-12 Hz) have been proposed as a key mechanism for the temporal resolution of visual perception. Higher alpha frequencies have been related to improved segregation of visual events over time, whereas lower alpha frequencies have been related to improved temporal integration. Similarly, also the phase of ongoing alpha has been shown to correlate with temporal integration/segregation. To test a causal relationship between alpha oscillations and perception, we here employed multi-channel transcranial alternating current stimulation (mc-tACS) over the right p

Poor reactivity of posterior electroencephalographic alpha rhythms during the eyes open condition in patients with dementia due to Parkinson's disease.

Here, we hypothesized that the reactivity of posterior resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) alpha rhythms during the transition from eyes-closed to -open condition might be lower in patients with Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) than in patients with Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD). A Eurasian database provided clinical-demographic-rsEEG datasets in 73 PDD patients, 35 ADD patients, and 25 matched cognitively unimpaired (Healthy) persons. The eLORETA freeware was used to estimate cortical rsEEG sources. Results showed substantial (greater than -10%) reduction (reactivity) in the

Preventing slowing down of alpha rhythms in stroke patients through modulation of cortical excitatory-inhibitory balance: a randomized controlled trial.

Several procedures have been developed to enhance the rehabilitation of stroke patients. However, most techniques struggle to promote sustained recovery in the months following the treatment. Therefore, it is essential to understand the mechanisms that can be harnessed during treatment to potentiate retention of benefits and sustained recovery. While stroke patients often suffer from thalamocortical dysrhythmia (TCD), a perturbation in alpha (8-13 Hz) rhythms caused by decreased excitation in the cortico-thalamic projections, the functional relevance of TCD in stroke patients is not yet clear.
