Technical data on the inhibition properties of some medicinal plant extracts towards caseinolytic protease proteolytic subunit of Plasmodium knowlesi.

Proteolytic subunit of the caseinolytic protease system of Plasmodium knowlesi (Pk-ClpP; EC 3.4.21.92) is considered a viable target for antimalarial drug development to eradicate P. knowlesi malaria infection in Malaysia and Southeast Asian region. Inhibition of this system leads to a disruption in the protein homeostasis molecular machinery and therefore be lethal for the parasite. While plants are considered excellent sources of bioactive compounds exhibiting inhibition activity towards Pk-ClpP, many local medicinal plants remain unexplored. This article expands the data collected from the

Qualitative ethnobotanical survey on the virtues of Carapa procera and plants used for protection against mosquitoes in Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: Carapa procera products, particularly the vegetable oil, are prized for their cosmetic, medicinal and especially insect repellent/insecticide properties. The latter property raises questions about the use of this plant against mosquitoes that transmit pathogens within Ivorian communities, given that Côte d'Ivoire is endemic for malaria. There is no scientific report on the use of C. procera and the plants traditionally used to prevent mosquito bites in Côte d'Ivoire. The aim of this study is therefore to determine the virtues of C. procera known to the people of Côte d'Ivoire and t

Diversity and functional potential of bacterial and fungal endophytes in traditional food wrapping leaves reveal implications for artisanal food safety and quality.

Plant leaves are widely utilised globally for the packaging and serving of traditionally prepared foods. The microbial communities associated with these wrapping leaves, particularly endophytes, are recognised to potentially influence food quality, safety, and preservation. Specifically, certain endophytes can enhance sensory attributes and nutritional value through fermentative processes, while the presence of harmful microorganisms may lead to spoilage and pose a risk of foodborne illness. This study utilised 16S rRNA, ITS metabarcoding and metagenomic functional analysis (PICRUSt2) to compr

Background: Gabon faced COVID-19 with more than 49,000 individuals tested positive and 307 recorded fatalities since the first reported case in 2020. A popular hypothesis is that the low rate of cases and deaths in the country was attributed to the use of medicinal plants in prevention and treatment. This study aimed to document the plants used for remedial and preventive therapies by the Gabonese population during the COVID-19 pandemic and to pinpoint specific potential plant species that merit further investigation. Methods: An ethnobotanical survey involving 97 participants was conducted in

Unveiling the carbohydrates profile of anti-diabetic medicinal plants by a developed and validated high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with refractive index detector (HPLC-RID).

Naturally occurring carbohydrates play a crucial role in the food nutritional and medicinal properties of plants. However, measuring these sugars in common herbal products is still not well established, especially for those intended for diabetic patients. The sugar content in these products directly impacts their safety, effectiveness, and authenticity. This study presents a straightforward isocratic high -performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method with a refractive index (RI) detector. It allows for the simultaneous identification and measurement of seven sugars: D-(-)-Ribose, D-(+)-Xylo

Some Nigerian plants of dermatologic importance.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of the world's population uses medicinal plants in the treatment of diseases and, in African countries, this rate is much higher. In recent years, however, medicinal plants have represented a primary health source for the pharmaceutical industry. No less than 400 compounds derived from plants are currently used in the preparation of drugs, such as vincristine and vinblastine used in the treatment of cancer. Nigerians still depend largely on crude herbal remedies or traditional medicine. They also use wild plants for cosmetics an

Pharmacological and behavioral investigation of putative self-medicative plants in Budongo chimpanzee diets.

Wild chimpanzees consume a variety of plants to meet their dietary needs and maintain wellbeing. While some plants have obvious value, others are nutritionally poor and/or contain bioactive toxins which make ingestion costly. In some cases, these nutrient-poor resources are speculated to be medicinal, thought to help individuals combat illness. In this study, we observed two habituated chimpanzee communities living in the Budongo Forest, Uganda, and collected 17 botanical samples associated with putative self-medication behaviors (e.g., bark feeding, dead wood eating, and pith-stripping) or ev
