The airway epithelial cell (AEC) response to allergens helps initiate and propagate allergic inflammation in asthma. CARMA3 is a scaffold protein that mediates G protein-coupled receptor-induced NF-κB activation in airway epithelium. In this study, we demonstrate that mice with CARMA3-deficient AECs have reduced airway inflammation, as well as reduced type 2 cytokine levels in response to Alternaria alternata. We report a javelina from Pinal County, Arizona, USA, with severe fungal dermatitis and cellulitis. Extreme emaciation and rostral disfiguration, including left-lateral displacement of the nasal planum, justified euthanasia. A pus-filled tract within the rostrum was observed. Histopathology revealed granulomatous inflammation with hyphae morphologically consistent with Alternaria sp. isolated by culture.

Two new macrolides, penicurvularins A and B (1 and 2), and the three known compounds (3-5) were isolated from cultures of the ascomycete fungus Alternaria sp. Their structures were elucidated primarily by NMR experiments. The absolute configuration of 1 was assigned from electronic circular dichroism calculations. Compounds 1 and 5 are active against aquatic pathogenic bacteria Vibrio alginolyticus and V. harveyi with MIC values ranging from 4 to 8 µg mL-1, while compound 5 is cytotoxic against tumor cell lines Huh7, 786-O, and 5673 with IC50 values of 11.6, 10.7, and 3.5 µM, respectively.

Invasive dermal infections in immunosuppressed patients by a wide variety of opportunistic fungi are well described in the literature; however, superficial infections (dermatomycosis) are more rarely described. We report 4 cases of dermatomycosis by Alternaria or Bipolaris species. PURPOSE: Alternaria alternata (AA) grows on decaying material. Spores occur on hot and dry days in the summer and can trigger asthma and allergic rhinitis. Skin prick test (SPT-AA) and Alternaria alternata-specific IgE (AA-IgE) are used for diagnostic purposes, but their predictive value is unclear.

Primary erythromelalgia (PEM) is a rare neuropathic pain disorder characterized by debilitating burning pain of the extremities relieved by cold exposure. We report a pediatric patient who developed severe, full-thickness lower extremity ulcerations infected with Alternaria alternata and complicated by osteomyelitis following consistent direct skin cooling with window air conditioning.
