The Dark Triad Traits of Firefighters and Risk-Taking at Work. The Mediating Role of Altruism, Honesty, and Courage.

Firefighting is considered a dangerous profession that imposes unique safety hazards. In this research, we investigated the relationship between the Dark Triad traits of firefighters (N = 1434, Mage = 39.03, SD = 6.9) and their risk-taking at work, considering the mediation role of altruism, honesty, and courage. We showed that firefighters high on Machiavellianism and psychopathy reported high risk-taking. Altruism, honesty, and courage mediated the relationship between Machiavellianism and risk-taking in firefighters. Honesty and courage mediated the association between psychopathy and risk-

When courtesy offends: effects of positive and negative behavior by the pbysically disabled on altruism and anger in normals.

The initial hypothesis was that physically disabled help-seekers will receive more aid from normal people than will help-seekers when both types of actors display positive personal qualities, whereas the reverse outcome will occur when both display negative qualities. In the first experiment a wheelchair-bound or normal confederate was either friendly and achievement oriented (positive condition) or caustic and apathetic (negative condition) while administering verbal tasks to subjects who were later asked to help the confederate. Contrary to prediction, subjects offered more help to the norma

Insurance and altruism values of a novel treatment for hypophosphatasia: a stated preference survey in the United States.

AIMS: To estimate the insurance and altruism values of a novel hypothetical treatment on survival gains for perinatal-/infantile-onset hypophosphatasia (HPP), a rare, severe, inherited disease, which-if untreated-leads to early mortality in children. METHODS: Residents of the United States aged 21-54 years from the general population participated in a web-based, cross-sectional, prospective, stated preference survey. The insurance value module included respondents planning to have children, whereas the altruism value module included respondents not planning to have children in the future. A m

The relationship between body donation and attitudes toward death and altruism in Changsha City in China.

In recent years, China has been facing a shortage of cadavers for teaching medical students. A better comprehension of the attitudes and factors influencing the general public's opinion toward body donation would be invaluable for planning and implementing body donation programs. Although altruistic attitude and attitudes toward death have received considerable attention in recent years globally, they have been largely understudied in China. Herein, the potential relationship between attitudes toward altruism and death, and willingness toward whole-body donation in a sample of university stude

Altruism in blood donation: Out of sight out of mind? Closing donation centers influences blood donor lapse.

In this paper, we use register data on all blood donors (n = 259,172) and changes in geographical locations of blood donation centers in the Netherlands over the past decade, to examine the strength of altruistic motivations in blood donation by testing how blood donor behavior changes after the cost of donating in the form of time and inconvenience increases. We examined whether closing donation centers influences blood donor lapse, and whether the risk for lapse varies between donors with different blood groups. A lower lapsing risk for donors with universal, O-negative blood as costs increa

Religion, altruism, knowledge and attitudes toward organ donation: a survey among a sample of Israeli college students.

Previous studies have shown that religiosity level, religion, altruism, knowledge, attitudes toward organ donation and registration status are related to future organ donation. The current study examines this association in a multicultural society such as Israel, which had not been studied so far. A convenience sample of 563 students was included in this cross-sectional study. Data about the study measures were collected by a structured and valid questionnaire. Results showed that willingness to donate was positively related to altruism level, positive attitudes toward organ donation and donor

Inclusive altruism born of suffering: the relationship between adversity and prosocial attitudes and behavior toward disadvantaged outgroups.

This article reports the results of 2 studies examining altruism born of suffering (E. Staub & J. R. Vollhardt, 2008). More specifically, we examined inclusive altruism born of suffering, which is directed toward members of disadvantaged outgroups. Drawing on and integrating clinical and social psychological theories, we hypothesized that individuals who had suffered from adverse life events would be more likely to help the outgroups in need than those who had not suffered. This was demonstrated for helpers who had experienced various forms of suffering (interpersonal and group-based harm, nat

Altruism, personal benefit, and anxieties: a phenomenological study of healthy volunteers' experiences in a placebo-controlled trial of duloxetine.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop an in-depth understanding of healthy volunteers' experiences of mental health trials. METHODS: A qualitative study was nested within a healthy volunteer placebo-controlled trial of duloxetine, a psychotropic drug used for treating patients with major depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Eight participants were interviewed, and data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. RESULTS: Interviewees described volunteering for the trial because they were interested in research, wanted the monetary incentive, wanted t

"I Make Myself Very Small in My Corner": Purposeful Withdrawal as an Expression of Patient Altruism.

CONTEXT: Altruism definition remains underexamined in end-of-life contexts. In palliative care, altruism may take new forms, especially when originating from patients. Understanding how patients perceive and express altruism is key to supporting their autonomy and sense of meaning. OBJECTIVES: To explore how palliative care patients understand and experience their own altruism, how it manifests in their relationships, and which forms of altruism they consider particularly meaningful at the end-of-life. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using reflexive thematic a

Altruism, Scepticism, and collective decision-making in foreign-born U.S. residents in a tuberculosis vaccine trial.

BACKGROUND: The current vaccine against tuberculosis, BCG, is effective when given in most TB-endemic countries at birth but has diminished efficacy against pulmonary TB after 15-20 years. As a result, new booster vaccines for adolescents and adults are being developed to realize the World Health Organization target of global elimination of TB by 2035. Multiple TB candidates thus are in active clinical development. METHODS: One of these, DAR-901, is advancing in human clinical trials. These clinical trials are conducted in BCG immunized adults with and without HIV infection in order to assess

Anxiolytic treatment of a trapped rat reduces helping and anxiogenic treatment increases helping: Evidence for emotional contagion in altruism.

The present experiment used the trapped rat model to explore whether pharmacological manipulation of distress affects the likelihood of helping behavior. 120 Sprague-Dawley rats (30 male pairs and 30 female pairs) completed 12 consecutive, daily trials assessing helping behavior. During an individual trial, a trapped rat was placed in a restrainer in the center of an open field, while its cagemate could move around freely and possibly open the restrainer by lifting a door. Trapped rats received an intraperitoneal injection of either 1) physiological saline, 2) the anxiolytic midazolam (1.5 mg/

When altruists cannot help: the influence of altruism on the mental health of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The positive predictive effect of altruism on physical and psychological well-being has been extensively demonstrated in previous studies, but few studies have examined the effect of altruism on negative mental health outcomes when altruists cannot perform altruistic behaviours. This study explored the influence of altruism on negative affect and mental health (anxiety and depressive symptoms) during the COVID-19 pandemic while people self-isolated at home in China. METHOD: University students were recruited to participate in a cross-sectional online survey during the outbreak of

A longitudinal study of the role of children's altruism and forgiveness in the relation between parental aggressive discipline and anxiety of preschoolers in China.

Using data collected over a 1-year period on a stratified random sample of 368 parents with children studying in nurseries (mean age=3.97years), this study assessed the predictive effects of parental corporal punishment, parental psychological aggression, preschoolers' altruism, and preschoolers' forgiveness on preschoolers' anxiety symptoms in Hong Kong, China. Results of hierarchical regression analyses showed that parental psychological aggression, preschoolers' altruism and preschoolers' forgiveness at Time 1 significantly predicted preschoolers' anxiety at Time 2, when controlling for the

Altruism Enhances Frontal Alpha Asymmetry and Reduces Sympathetic Activity: A Multimodal EEG-ECG Study With Implications for Therapeutic Interventions.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate neurophysiological differences between altruistic and selfish behaviors by simultaneously measuring electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG). Specifically, we hypothesized that altruistic behavior would be associated with distinct patterns of cortical activity and autonomic responses. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy participants (17 females; mean age: 20.00 ± 1.18 years) completed crafting tasks in a counterbalanced order under altruistic and selfish conditions. We measured and analyzed frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) scores, cardiac s

Increased neural activity of right temporo-parietal junction causes different effect on altruism in situations of advantageous and disadvantageous inequity.

Altruism is defined as the performance of "costly acts that confer economic benefits on other individuals", which is one of the major puzzles in the behavioural sciences today. Altruistic behaviour not only facilitates interpersonal adaptation and harmony but also enhances social welfare and social responsibility. The right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) has been proposed as playing a key role in guiding human altruistic behaviour, but its precise functional contribution to altruistic behaviour in situations of advantageous and disadvantageous inequity remains unclear. The purpose of this st

Does competition really bring out the worst? Testosterone, social distance and inter-male competition shape parochial altruism in human males.

Parochial altruism, defined as increased ingroup favoritism and heightened outgroup hostility, is a widespread feature of human societies that affects altruistic cooperation and punishment behavior, particularly in intergroup conflicts. Humans tend to protect fellow group members and fight against outsiders, even at substantial costs for themselves. Testosterone modulates responses to competition and social threat, but its exact role in the context of parochial altruism remains controversial. Here, we investigated how testosterone influences altruistic punishment tendencies in the presence of

Associations of herpes zoster disease perceptions, altruism and family harmony with herpes zoster vaccination uptake among older adults in Shenzhen, China.

Herpes zoster (HZ) poses a substantial health burden among older adults, yet HZ vaccination coverage remains low in mainland China. This study examined the associations between HZ vaccination uptake and factors at both individual and interpersonal levels. This was a cross-sectional survey conducted in Shenzhen, China, between August and October 2024. A total of 1,556 Shenzhen residents aged ≥60 y with established administrative health records were recruited through multistage random sampling. Multivariable multilevel logistic regression models were fitted (level 1: individual participants; lev

"Informed altruism" and "partner restriction" in the reduction of HIV infection in injecting drug users entering detoxification treatment in New York City, 1990-2001.

OBJECTIVE: To assess recent developments in the HIV epidemic in injecting drug users (IDUs) in New York City. With >50,000 cases of AIDS in IDUs, New York has experienced the largest HIV/AIDS epidemic in IDUs of any city in the world. METHODS: Serial cross-sectional surveys conducted continuously from 1990 to 2001 of IDUs entering the Beth Israel Medical Center (BIMC) drug detoxification program in New York City. HIV serostatus, use of prevention services, and risk behaviors were measured. Individuals were permitted to participate multiple times in the surveys but not more than once in any ye

The Efficacy of a Brief, Altruism-Eliciting Video Intervention in Enhancing COVID-19 Vaccination Intentions Among a Population-Based Sample of Younger Adults: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: High COVID-19 vaccine uptake is crucial to containing the pandemic and reducing hospitalizations and deaths. Younger adults (aged 20-39 years) have demonstrated lower levels of vaccine uptake compared to older adults, while being more likely to transmit the virus due to a higher number of social contacts. Consequently, this age group has been identified by public health authorities as a key target for vaccine uptake. Previous research has demonstrated that altruistic messaging and motivation is associated with vaccine acceptance. OBJECTIVE: This study had 2 objectives: (1) to eval

Parental risk preferences and children's vaccination coverage.

This paper examines vaccine hesitancy from a behavioral economics perspective, focusing on how parental risk preferences, altruism, and vaccine distrust affect children's vaccination rates. A model of parental investment in children's health is developed and expanded using empirical data from WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Global Preferences Survey. The study utilizes a fractional response probit model to analyze data from 69 countries, accounting for both stringent and non-stringent vaccination policies. Results show that risk aversion, altruism, and trust are positively associated with
