Anatomical characteristics of the alveolar process and basal bone that have an effect on socket healing.

Following tooth extraction, a sequence of events takes place in order to close the wound and restore tissue homeostasis, a process called socket healing. The outcome of socket healing includes a marked reduction of the ridge dimensions. The amount of tissue loss that occurs during healing is influenced by several local and systemic factors. Thus, the aim of the present review was to describe the effect of anatomical characteristics of the alveolar process and basal bone on the socket healing outcome. The studies included showed that the quantity (number) and quality (composition) of socket wal

[Microfocus radioimaging in the evaluation of bone regeneration in patients with congenital fissures of the alveolar process].

Congenital fissures of the alveolar process and hard palate are one of the severest pathologies of the teeth and jaws. Plain magnification microfocus radiography and microfocus radioimaging of the upper jaw with bite occlusion are the radiodiagnostic methods of choice for the evaluation of bone defects and regenerative processes. To study the regenerative processes, 52 patients aged 10-16 years with congenital fissures of the alveolar process and hard palate were examined after bone reparative surgery. A bone block from the mental region of the lower jaw, or cancellous iliac crest tissue or bi

Changes in the anterior nasal spine and the alveolar process of the macillae in leprosy a clinical examination.

A brief review is presented of the Danish medieval skeletons with leprosy changes, particularly in the skulls, where the pathologic specific changes found are termed facies leprosa. The clinical aspect of facies leprosa is termed Bergen Syndrome I (nasal leprosy) and Bergen Syndrome II (the leprogenic changes of the alveolar process of the maxilla superior with loosening and/or loss of the frontal incisors). An account is given of the interim result of a clinical examination of 333 inpatients at the Prapradaeng Leprosarium in Bangkok, Thailand. In the group of 258 patients with lepromatous lep

Calvarial bone grafts to augment the alveolar process in partially dentate patients: a prospective case series.

BACKGROUND: Calvarial bone grafts as a pre-implant augmentation procedure are mostly used to reconstruct the edentulous maxilla, although calvarial grafts could also be used in the partially dentate patients needing extensive bone grafting. METHODS: In 7 consecutive partially dentate patients needing bone grafting because of a large bony defect as a result of trauma (n = 1), oligodontia (n = 1), failed previous bone augmentation (n = 1), or atrophy (n = 4), the alveolar process was reconstructed with calvarial bone as a pre-implant procedure. RESULTS: A total of 30 implants was placed either

Localized gingival enlargement associated with alveolar process expansion: peripheral ossifying fibroma coincident with central odontogenic fibroma.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common occurrence of localized gingival enlargements, which often represent reactive lesions, the temporal and spatial association of such a lesion with a central jaw lesion has not been reported. The purpose of this case report is to present the exceptional combination of a peripheral ossifying fibroma and a central odontogenic fibroma. The differential diagnosis and management of each lesion is reviewed. METHODS: A 45-year-old black female presented with a chief complaint of a painless protuberance in the left mandible of 1-year duration. Clinical and radiographic ex

Reconstruction of Atrophic Alveolar Process With Xenograft, Fibrin-Rich Plasma, Titanium Mesh, Implant Placement, and Immediate Provisionalization.

Placement of dental implants is often compromised due to alveolar ridge resorption caused by postextraction defects, periodontal disease, traumatic tooth avulsion, or long-term edentulism. During the last 2 decades, various techniques have been proposed for reconstructing atrophic alveolar processes. Different therapeutic modalities have been implemented to achieve bone gain. These techniques require an orderly sequence of maneuvers, which involves handling the soft and hard tissues to minimize the risk of complications. A clinical case of reconstruction of an atrophic alveolar process with xe

Risk of Healing Complications Following Alveolar Process Fractures in the Primary Dentition: A Retrospective Clinical Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Alveolar bone process fractures in preschool children are not well documented in the literature. Alveolar process fractures are located very close to primary teeth and permanent tooth germs. This study investigates the risk of healing complications following alveolar process fractures in the primary dentition and potential sequelae in the permanent dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving 21 patients with 49 primary teeth involved in an alveolar fracture. The follow-up protocol included clinical and radiographic examinations at spe

The alveolar process following single-tooth extraction: a study of maxillary incisor and premolar sites in man.

OBJECTIVE: The present investigation was performed to determine some dimensional alterations that occur in the alveolar process of the incisor and premolar sites of the maxilla following tooth removal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Computer-assisted cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were obtained from the maxilla using an iCAT unit, and involved edentulous and contralateral tooth sites. For each site included in the study, parasagittal and axial reconstructions, 1 mm apart, were made and measurements of different variables (cross-sectional area, height, and width) performed. RESULTS: The st

Soft tissue stability after segmental distraction of the anterior mandibular alveolar process: a 5.5 year follow-up.

Soft tissue changes were analysed retrospectively in 17 patients following distraction osteogenesis (DO) of the mandibular anterior alveolar process. Lateral cephalograms were traced by hand, digitized, superimposed, and evaluated at T1 (17.0 days), after DO at T2 (mean 6.5 days), at T3 (mean 24.4 days), at T4 (mean 2.0 years), and at T5 (mean 5.5 years). Statistical analysis was carried out using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, paired t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and linear backward regression analysis. 5.5 years postoperatively, the net effect for the soft tissue at point B' was 88% o

Alveolar cavitational osteopathosis. Manifestations of an infectious process and its implication in the causation of chronic pain.

A recently discovered oral disease process of infectious origin, characterized by nonradiographically detectable, hollow, pathologic, alveolar cavitational lesions of significant size, is described. This oral infectious disease process, termed alveolar cavitational osteopathosis, is causally implicated not only in the genesis of certain craniofacial pain syndromes, among them idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia and atypical facial pain, but also in chronic pain syndromes remote from the craniofacial region including the back, chest, arms, legs and cervical areas. A diagnostic process is presented

Microdont Developing Outside the Alveolar Process and Within Oral Diffuse and Plexiform Neurofibroma in Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Numerical aberrations of permanent dentition and dystopic tooth eruption are part of the phenotype of the tumor predisposition syndrome neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). In these cases, surplus tooth germs usually develop in the alveolar processes of the jaw. This report attests to the dystopic development of a dysplastic supernumerary tooth in NF1 arising outside the jaw. CASE REPORT: The 8-year-old male patient developed a microdont outside the bone and above the occlusal plane of the retained maxillary right second molar. The supernumerary tooth was completely embedded in ora

Changes in alveolar process dimensions following extraction of molars with advanced periodontal disease: A clinical pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to assess the alterations of socket dimensions after a 6-month healing period following molar extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen molars were extracted due to advanced periodontitis. CBCT scans were taken immediately after extraction and once more 6 months later. Superimposition of CBCT images was used to measure the following: horizontal changes at extraction sites at three corono-apical levels (-1, -3, and -5 mm) below the bone crest, three mesio-distal levels (mesial, central, and distal), vertical changes at nine regions of t

Severe fracture of the maxillary alveolar process associated with extrusive luxation and tooth avulsion: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this report is to present a case of severe fracture of the maxillary anterior alveolar process with substantial bone dislodgement associated with extrusive tooth luxation and avulsion. BACKGROUND: Dentoalveolar trauma is a challenge to dentistry, especially in young patients, for it can lead to early tooth loss which compromises oral function, esthetics, self-esteem, and alter the long-term plan of care for the victim. CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old girl with severe dentoalveolar trauma to the maxillary anterior region presented for emergency care for her injury. Treatment consis

Fusion of maxillary and mandibular alveolar process together with a median mandibular cleft: a rare congenital anomaly.

Congenital fusion of the maxillary alveolar process and mandible is a very rare entity. A one day old male newborn was referred to our clinic with a diagnosis of a 'absence of oral cavity'. Physical examination revealed that there was no mouth opening bilaterally in the posterior region due to maxillary and mandibular bone fusion; and in the front there was only 1 mm of mouth opening. Examination of the intraoral space could not be achieved. No other congenital anomaly was detected on general examination. The infant, who was fed via a nasogastric tube for 1 month, was operated on. An intra-ora
