OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of nutrition intervention compared with standard practice on dietary intake in outpatients receiving radiotherapy. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled trial. SUBJECTS: Sixty consecutive radiation oncology outpatients (51 men and nine women; age 61.9+/-14 years

American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons' Position Paper on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws-2022 Update.

Strategies for management of patients with, or at risk for, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) - formerly referred to as bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ)-were set forth in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) position papers in 2007, 2009 and 2014. The position papers were developed by a committee appointed by the AAOMS Board of Trustees and comprising clinicians with extensive experience in caring for these patients, as well as clinical and basic science researchers. The knowledge base and experience in addressing MRONJ

Evaluating the Readability of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Pediatric Orthopaedic Registries: Alignment With National Institutes of Health and American Medical Association Standards.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are essential tools for assessing surgical effectiveness and capturing patient perspectives on functionality, symptoms, and quality of life. However, readability is critical for ensuring patients can understand and accurately complete them. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and American Medical Association (AMA) recommend that patient materials be written at or below a sixth-grade reading level. In pediatric orthopaedic surgery, the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI), Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), an…

Factors associated with the use of medicines and self-medication during the COVID-19 pandemic in 12 Latin American countries.

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has triggered a rise in the global phenomenon of self-medication. The use of medicines with unsubstantiated claims of benefit for the prevention and/or treatment of infected people has been widely adopted. OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors associated with the use of medicines and self-medication by Latin American populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted via an analysis of secondary data collected from 8777 responses from 12 Latin American countries obtained from a su

Racial Disparities in Medication Adherence between African American and Caucasian Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Their Associated Factors.

OBJECTIVE: Medication nonadherence is more common in African Americans compared with Caucasians. We examined the racial adherence gaps among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and explored factors associated with nonadherence. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were obtained from consecutive patients prescribed SLE medications seen at an academic lupus clinic between August 2018 and February 2019. Adherence was measured using both self-report and pharmacy refill data. High composite adherence was defined as having both high self-reported adherence and high refill rates. Covariates we

The North American Menopause Society 1998 menopause survey: Part II. Counseling about hormone replacement therapy: association with socioeconomic status and access to medical care.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine two predictors of women's obtaining hormone replacement therapy (HRT) counseling: socioeconomic status and access to health care. DESIGN: During May-July 1998, by means of random-digit telephone dialing, 749 postmenopausal women who were living in the United States and aged 50-65 years were interviewed. On average, they were 56.8 years and 11.8 years postmenopausal. Most (86.0%) were Caucasian, and their median annual income was approximately $40,000. Nearly all (90.8%) had medical insurance coverage; 47.6% of those insured received care fro

Program requirements for residency/fellowship education in neuroendovascular surgery/interventional neuroradiology: special report on graduate medical education: a joint statement by the American Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Society of Neuroradiology.

Neuroendovascular surgery/interventional neuroradiology is a relatively new subspecialty that has been evolving since the mid-1970s. During the last 2 decades, significant advances have been made in this field of minimally invasive therapy for the treatment of intracranial cerebral aneurysms; acute stroke therapy intervention; cerebral arteriovenous malformations; carotid-cavernous sinus fistulae; head, neck, and spinal cord vascular lesions; and other complex cerebrovascular diseases. Advanced postresidency fellowship programs have now been established in North America, Europe, and Japan, spe

Clinical Features of ANCA-Associated Vasculitis in African American Patients in the United States: A Single-Center Medical Records Review Study.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical features at presentation of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) between African American (AA) and White patients. METHODS: This is a chart review of cases between January 2003 and December 2018. African American patients with AAV were identified and matched in a 1:2 ratio with White comparators based on the year of diagnosis (±4 years). Data on demographics, clinical, and laboratory features and outcomes at presentation were collected. Descriptive statistics were used to compare the characteristics between groups. RESULTS: Th

Patch Test Reactions Associated With Topical Medications: A Retrospective Analysis of the North American Contact Dermatitis Group Data (2001-2018).

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Topical medications may lead to allergic contact dermatitis. This study characterized positive patch test reactions associated with medications in patients evaluated by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG). METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis of the NACDG data (2001-2018). Patients with at least 1 positive patch test reaction associated with a medication source were included. Allergens, reaction characteristics, clinical relevance, and source details were tabulated. RESULTS: Of 43,722 patients, 6374 (14.6%) had positive allergic patch test re

Medical Conditions in Former Professional American-Style Football Players Are Associated With Self-Reported Clinical Features of Traumatic Encephalopathy Syndrome.

Consensus criteria for traumatic encephalopathy syndrome (TES) specify that at least one core clinical feature of cognitive impairment (CI; e.g., difficulties with memory, executive function) or neurobehavioral dysregulation (ND; e.g., explosiveness, rage, and mood lability) be present and not fully accounted for by other health disorders. Associations between self-reported symptoms that mirror the core clinical features of TES-and how they may be related to concomitant medical conditions-remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of medical conditions and footba

Interaction of Medical Conditions and Football Exposures Associated with Premortem Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Diagnosis in Former Professional American Football Players.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Despite being a postmortem diagnosis, former professional American-style football players report receiving chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) diagnoses from medical care providers. However, many players also report other health conditions that manifest with cognitive and psychological symptoms. The purpose of this study was to identify how medical conditions, psychological disorders, and football exposure combinations are associated with former athletes reporting a premortem CTE diagnosis. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional cohort survey from 2015 to 2019
