Answering a Call to Action: Reducing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Using a Healthcare Champion Model.

Prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) remain critical public health issues. Alcohol use in pregnancy is a leading preventable cause of birth defects, developmental disabilities, and learning disabilities. Alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) is effective at reducing excessive alcohol use. However, this clinical preventive service remains critically underutilized in primary care. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called for the creation of FASD Champion programs to promote clinician education about FASDs. Six professional health o

Pregnant nurses' experiences of working shifts: a qualitative systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The proposed systematic review will synthesize the experiences of nurses working in any shifts during pregnancy. INTRODUCTION: Nurses are among the most burdened health care workers and are at risk of diseases of the circulatory system due to prolonged standing. For pregnant nurses, this could reduce blood circulation and blood flow to the uterus and placenta. Contributing factors include long working hours and frequent heavy lifting, which may induce uterine contractions and premature birth; irregular shifts, which exacerbate fatigue; and high levels of psychosocial stress. There

Working Together to Promote Kidney Health.

The American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) and American Society of Nephrology (ASN) have joined forces with the goal of advancing improvements in kidney care through transformative change. Through the integration of expertise, resources, and networks from both organizations, these collaborations have the potential to improve patient outcomes, advance clinical practice, and shape policy initiatives. In this article, we describe our focus on three areas: strengthening the nephrology and nephrology nursing workforce, championing health care equity, and advocating for kidney health.

Bridging Hearts and Classrooms: A Collaborative Model for Building School Nurse-Cardiovascular Nursing Partnerships.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD risk factors, including obesity and hypertension, are increasingly prevalent among children and youth, highlighting the need for early sustained prevention. Positioned at the intersection of health and education, school nurses are uniquely equipped to support cardiovascular health in everyday practice. PURPOSE: We propose a collaborative model linking school nurses with the cardiovascular nursing community, drawing on the American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 for Kids framework, the National Association of School Nurses School Nursing

Practical implementation of the guidelines for unstable angina/non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in the emergency department: a scientific statement from the American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology (Subcommittee on Acute Cardiac Care), Council on Cardiovascular Nursing, and Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Interdisciplinary Working Group, in Collaboration With the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

In the United States each year, >5.3 million patients present to emergency departments with chest discomfort and related symptoms. Ultimately, >1.4 million individuals are hospitalized for unstable angina and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. For emergency physicians and cardiologists alike, these patients represent an enormous challenge to accurately diagnose and appropriately treat. This update of the 2002 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Unstable Angina and Non-ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (U

Changing blood transfusion policy and practice.

It is often an accepted practice that a 20-gauge-or-larger catheter is used for the safe transfusion of blood in adult patients, but it is unclear what evidence supports this practice. This article tells the story of how a small team of oncology nurses designed and implemented an evidence-based practice project to challenge that convention. A literature search and a consultation with the standards of the American Association of Blood Banks and the Infusion Nurses Society determined that a smaller-than-20-gauge catheter can be used safely to transfuse blood in adults, a discovery that led to a

National neonatal resuscitation training program in Nigeria (2008-2012): a preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: Routine institutional training of doctors and nurses on newborn resuscitation have commenced, to improve the quality of resuscitation available to high-risk babies, in Nigeria, as a means of reducing newborn deaths in the country. Perinatal asphyxia contributes to 26% of newborn deaths in Nigeria. Perinatal asphyxia results when babies have difficulty establishing spontaneous respiration after birth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2008 and 2012, doctors and nurses drawn from all the geo-political zones were trained using the Neonatal Resuscitation Training (NRT) manual of the Amer

Importance Ranking of Electrocardiogram Rhythms: A Primer for Curriculum Development.

INTRODUCTION: Electrocardiogram interpretation is an essential skill for emergency and critical care nurses and physicians. There remains a gap in standardized curricula and evaluation strategies used to achieve and assess competence in electrocardiogram interpretation. The purpose of this study was to develop an importance ranking of the 120 American Heart Association electrocardiogram diagnostic labels with interdisciplinary perspectives to inform curriculum development. METHODS: Data for this mixed methods study were collected through focus groups and individual semi-structured interviews.

Nosocomial infections: important acute care nursing-sensitive outcomes indicators.

Clinical and cost burdens related to nosocomial infections continue to plague the US healthcare system. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and the immunocompromised are especially at risk. Current evidence suggests that because hospital stays are shorter, nosocomial infection rates per 1000 patients have actually increased. Nosocomial infections, specifically bacteremias, have been targeted by the American Nurses Association as outcomes that can be affected by nursing in acute care settings. Nursing staffing and practices recently have been linked to the incidence of nosocomial infect

Magnet Recognition, Leadership Responsiveness, and Nurse Moral Distress: A Multilevel Mediation Analysis.

PURPOSE: Moral distress is a pervasive challenge in nursing and has been associated with burnout, job dissatisfaction, and turnover. Although Magnet Recognition has been associated with more favorable nursing practice environments and nurse outcomes, little is known about the association between Magnet status and nurses' experiences of moral distress or the role of leadership responsiveness in this association. This study examined whether management responsiveness to patient care concerns accounted for part of the association between hospital Magnet status and nurse moral distress. DESIGN: Th

Supply and segregation of nursing home beds in Chicago communities.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that a shortage of nursing home beds in Latino communities and segregation within facilities in urban settings may contribute to low utilization patterns that both Latino and African American elders exhibit. In order to explore structural barriers to nursing home care for African American and Latino families, this study examines the supply and ethnoracial composition of nursing homes in Chicago communities. DESIGN: With data from the 1990 US Census of Population and Illinois' 1994 Long-Term Care Facility Survey, regression was used to determine if Latino

Model for heart failure education.

Heart failure (HF) is the heart's inability to meet the body's need for blood and oxygen. According to the American Heart Association 2013 update, approximately 5.1 million people are diagnosed with HF in the United States in 2006. Heart failure is the most common diagnosis for hospitalization. In the United States, the HF direct and indirect costs are estimated to be US $39.2 billion in 2010. To address this issue, nursing educators designed innovative teaching frameworks on HF management both in academia and in clinical settings. The model was based on 2 resources: the American Association o

National survey of central venous catheter flushing in the intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is needed on the best solution for flushing central venous catheters. OBJECTIVE: To understand current flushing practices for short-term central venous catheters among critical care nurses before implementation of a randomized, controlled trial comparing physiological saline with heparin solution for flushing to maintain catheter patency. METHODS: A 6-item survey including demographic data was mailed to 2000 practicing critical care nurses in the United States. An additional 316 surveys were completed at the annual conference of the American Association of Critical-Care
