Synthesis of anacardic acids, 6-[8(Z),11(Z)-pentadecadienyl]salicylic acid and 6-[8(Z),11(Z),14-pentadecatrienyl]salicylic acid.

11-Chloro-3-methoxy-2-undecenal was synthesized from 8-bromooctanol, and an annelation reaction with this aldehyde and ethyl acetoacetate proceeded to give the ethyl 6-(8-chlorooctyl)salicylate. Ethyl 6-(8-chlorooctyl)salicylate was converted to ethyl 6-(7-formylheptyl)-2-methoxybenzoate through the iodide after protection of the phenolic hydroxyl group. Finally, the Wittig reaction with the aldehyde and triphenylphosphonium iodides in the presence of BuLi gave the methoxybenzoates, and then treatments of these methoxybenzoates with BBr3 in CH2Cl2 and 10% NaOH in ethanol gave 6-18(Z),11(Z)-pen

Reflectance Confocal Microscopy as a Diagnostic Aid in Allergic Contact Dermatitis to Mango Sap.

The mango tree (Mangifera indica) produces nutrient-dense fruit that is consumed across the world. Interestingly, despite widespread consumption of its fruit and its categorization in the Anacardiaceae family, allergic reactions to the mango tree and its components are comparatively rare, sometimes manifesting as allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Evaluation of ACD most commonly includes a thorough clinical assessment with diagnostic support from patch testing and histopathologic review following skin biopsy. In recent years, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) has shown promising potential

The chalcone butein from Rhus verniciflua shows antifibrogenic activity.

Butein is known to be the major component of the bark of Rhus verniciflua Stokes (Anacardiaceae). The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of butein on liver fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in rats, and to explore its antifibrogenic mechanism. Butein (10 mg/kg/day or 25 mg/kg/day) showed a significant reduction of hydroxyproline and malondialdehyde levels in rats. The expression of alpha1(I) collagen and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) mRNAs in liver was clearly reduced in a dose-dependent manner in rats given butein compared with control CCl4-treate

The effect of Spondias mombin L. against Strongyloides venezuelensis: An in vitro approach.

Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease mainly caused by the nematode parasite Strongyloides stercoralis. Current treatment consists in the administration of ivermectin or, alternatively, albendazole (or analogues). Concerns regarding these drugs' irregular cure rates and side effects, raise a need for therapeutic alternatives. In this study, we tested the in vitro effect of Spondias mombin L. ethanolic extract against the laboratory model for strongyloidiasis, Strongyloides venezuelensis. The ethanolic extract was further fractionated and each fraction was also tested. Tested fractio

Antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of young shoots of the smoke tree, Cotinus coggygria Scop.

In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of the young shoots of the smoke tree, Cotinus coggygria Scop., Anacardiaceae. The acetone extract and the derived ethyl acetate fraction effectively inhibited the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (MIC 25-200 µg/ml), while the chloroform fraction showed pronounced activity against the yeast Candida albicans (MIC 3.12 µg/ml). The ethyl acetate fraction exhibited a significant ferric-reducing ability (10.7 mmol Fe(2+) /g extract), a very high DPPH radical scavenging activity (SC50  = 1.7 µg/ml) and inhibition of lipid pe

Comparative Study of Moringa oleifera and Sclerocarya birrea Extracts in Forensic Urine Analysis.

Forensic science depends on identifying biological fluid stains to maintain DNA for profiling and associating suspects with crime scenes. These stains can include urine and other secretions; however, presumptive and confirmatory tests often target specific fluids and might damage DNA because of destructive chemical processes. Traditional reagents like 4-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde (DMAC) allow for quick screening but have low specificity and sensitivity in complex crime scene matrices. Hence, there is a necessity for a universal, highly sensitive, and non-destructive technique for the accurate

Community of Bark and Ambrosia Beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) Infesting Brazilian Peppertree Treated With Herbicide and the Volatile Tree Response.

Brazilian peppertree, Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi (Anacardiaceae), is one of the most invasive weeds of natural and agricultural areas of Florida, Hawaii, and Texas (USA). Herbicides are the main tool used to manage populations of this weed. Faunal inventories of the insects associated with invasive populations of the weed have mostly listed leaf-feeding phytophagous, pollinator, or predacious species. Among these, bark and ambrosia beetles were collected only once from S. terebinthifolia in the invaded range and there are no reports from the native range. A diverse assemblage of bark and am
