Tracking tick-borne diseases in Mongolian livestock using next generation sequencing (NGS).

The livestock industry in Mongolia accounts for 24% of national revenue, with one third of the population maintaining a pastoral lifestyle. This close connection between Mongolian population and livestock is a major concern for pathogen transfer, especially given the increase in vector-borne diseases globally. This study examines blood samples from livestock to assess the prevalence of tick-borne bacterial infections across three provinces in Mongolia (Dornogovi, Selenge, Töv). Whole blood samples from 243 livestock (cattle=38, camel=11, goat=85, horse=22, sheep=87) were analyzed with 16S meta

Primary Tick-Borne Protozoan and Rickettsial Infections of Animals in Turkey.

Parasitic diseases caused by ticks constitute a barrier on global animal production, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. As a country with a temperate and subtropical climate, Turkey has topography, climate, and pasture resources, and these resources are suitable for animal breeding and parasite-host-vector relationships throughout the country. This geography restricts the regulations on animal movements in the southeastern and eastern Anatolia because of the close contact with the neighboring states. The livestock resources in Turkey are regulated by strong foundations. Almost 30% of

Molecular epidemiology reveals co-circulation of five Anaplasma species with zoonotic potential in sheep and goats from Henan province, China.

Anaplasma spp. are tick-borne pathogens of veterinary and public health importance. Although infections in small ruminants have been documented across China, data from the major livestock region of Henan are limited. Here, we conducted the first molecular epidemiological survey of Anaplasma in sheep and goats from Henan province. During 2022-2023, 883 spleen samples were collected from ten prefectures. Screening by nested PCR assay targeting the 16S rRNA gene and subsequent phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA, gltA, and groEL genes revealed an overall prevalence of 12.46% (110/883), with sig

Tick-borne pathogens from ruminant ticks in a Mediterranean ecosystem from Eastern Spain.

Vector-borne diseases represent various sicknesses that are increasingly significant in human and veterinary health. Among the zoonotic agents transmitted by ticks, infections caused by the intracellular pathogens from the Anaplasmataceae family and piroplasmids (Babesia/Theileria spp.) are particularly notable due to the substantial economic losses they cause in the livestock sector. A study was carried out to assess the prevalence of these pathogens in ticks from ruminants in the province of Valencia (Eastern Iberian Peninsula). Between 2019 and 2022, 1674 ticks were collected from 163 domes

Haemoparasitic agents associated with ovine babesiosis: A possible negative interaction between Babesia ovis and Theileria ovis.

Babesiosis, theileriosis, and anaplasmosis are the most common tick-borne diseases in sheep. The majority of anaplasmosis and theileriosis are subclinical; however, babesiosis causes severe infections in small ruminants. Although there are many reports of co-infections with the agents of these diseases, their clinical severity compared with either of the infections alone is unknown. Within the host, interactions between co-infecting species may cause variations in clinical presentation and response to therapy. The aim of this study was to determine the tick-borne agents in sheep located at sit

Guidelines for the Direct Detection of Anaplasma spp. in Diagnosis and Epidemiological Studies.

The genus Anaplasma (Rickettsiales: Anaplasmataceae) comprises obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria that are mainly transmitted by ticks, and currently includes six species: Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma centrale, Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Anaplasma platys, and Anaplasma ovis. These have long been known as etiological agents of veterinary diseases that affect domestic and wild animals worldwide. A zoonotic role has been recognized for A. phagocytophilum, but other species can also be pathogenic for humans. Anaplasma infections are usually challenging to diagnose, cl

Diversity of Rickettsiales in Rhipicephalus microplus Ticks Collected in Domestic Ruminants in Guizhou Province, China.

Rhipicephalus microplus ticks are vectors for multiple pathogens infecting animals and humans. Although the medical importance of R. microplus has been well-recognized and studied in most areas of China, the occurrence of tick-borne Rickettsiales has seldom been investigated in Guizhou Province, Southwest China. In this study, we collected 276 R. microplus ticks from cattle (209 ticks) and goats (67 ticks) in three locations of Guizhou Province. The Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia were detected by targeting the 16S rRNA gene and were further characterized by amplifying the key genes. One

Ticks of small ruminants in China.

The importance of ticks and tick-borne diseases of small ruminants in China is discussed. Of the 109 species of ticks identified to date in China, 45 species infest small ruminants. Five species have been proved to be involved, or possibly involved, in the transmission of tick-borne diseases. Anaplasma ovis, Babesia motasi, Babesia ovis and two unidentified species of Theileria, have been recorded in small ruminants in China. The diseases caused by these organisms are widespread in China, causing great economic losses, estimated at approximately 70 million USD per annum. Anaplasmosis occurs fr

Cattle and small ruminant piroplasmosis in Macedonia, Greece.

Macedonia is an endemic region of cattle as well as of sheep and goat piroplasmosis In cattle, Theileria orientalis (=T. buffeli?), the agent of Eurasian benign theileriosis, is the most common and widespread piroplasm species. T. annulata, the agent of tropical theileriosis, seems to be rare and limited to few foci, but causes very severe clinical cases, especially in imported pure-bred or cross-bred animals. Babesia bovis and B. bigemina are present in several localities, and often coexist. Cattle babesiosis cases are due to both piroplasms, but B. bovis is considered responsible for the sev
