BACKGROUND: The maxillary artery can be injured during procedures in the subcondylar portion of the mandible. Thorough knowledge of this region is mandatory to avoid accidental puncture of the maxillary artery, which can lead to profuse bleeding that is hard to control.
METHODS: In 16 halves of eight embalmed cadaver heads, the maxillary artery was dissected from the branching point to the entrance point to the maxillary sinus. Its anatomical relationships with certain landmarks were recorded numerically.
RESULTS: The mean distance of the branching point of the maxillary artery to the tragal

We used MRI studies of four patients to investigate the lesions responsible for landmark agnosia. A detailed investigation of the relationship between the symptoms and the lesions suggests that the right posterior part of the parahippocampal gyrus is critical for the acquisition of novel information about buildings and landscapes, and that the same region plus the anterior half of the lingual gyrus and the adjacent fusiform gyrus play an important role in the identification of familiar buildings and landscapes. Furthermore, the lesion responsible for prosopagnosia, which frequently occurs with

Descriptive cross-sectional study. Background: The greater auricular nerve (GAN) courses over the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) to supply the area of skin over the parotid gland (PG), the lower auricle and over the mastoid. It is vulnerable to injury during rhytidectomies and parotidectomies, resulting in sensory losses and pain. Although previous studies have identified suitable landmarks, injury to the GAN in the Kenyan setting still occurs. This study therefore aimed at identifying specific landmarks for the GAN and describing its branching pattern. Objective: To determine the anatomical

OBJECT: Reports describing surgical landmarks with which to identify the branches of the lumbar plexus found on the posterior abdominal wall are lacking in the English-language literature.
METHODS: The authors examined 22 sides from six female and five male cadavers. Measurements were made between the branches of the lumbar plexus and various bone landmarks such as the midline vertebral bodies, supracristal plane--a horizontal line connecting the superior-most aspect of the left and right iliac crests approximating the LA-5 vertebrae--and anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). The mean distanc

The location of many deep anatomic structures of the face and neck can be identified by their relationship to surface landmarks. By systematically identifying the important anatomic landmarks, one can perform surgical operations with greater confidence of avoiding inadvertent damage to underlying structures.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic vidian neurectomy has been performed for decades on patients with refractory allergic rhinitis and vasomotor rhinitis. Although the surgical approach has evolved continuously, it still has deficiencies in terms of accuracy and safety. To overcome these deficiencies, we conducted anatomical study to propose a modified endoscopic vidian neurectomy. METHODS: Five adult dry skulls and seven fresh skull specimens were used to identify landmarks for locating the vidian nerve. The modified surgical approach was applied to 9 patients with allergic or vasomotor rhinitis to test i

PURPOSE: To determine the accuracy of screw placement using fluoroscopy and anatomic landmarks during vertebral body tethering (VBT) surgery.
METHODS: Ten patients with 73 VBT screws were converted to posterior spinal fusion (PSF) after continued curve progression. The positions of each VBT screw were analyzed using intraoperative computed tomography (CT) scans performed for image guidance during VBT. Differences for screws placed using an open versus thoracoscopic approach were noted for the screw position in each vertebra, distance from the spinal canal, unicortical versus bicortical placem

BACKGROUND: Accurate location of the skin incision is helpful to decrease the technical difficulty and save the operative time in anterior cervical spine surgery. Spine surgeons usually use the traditional neck anatomic structures (the hyoid bone, thyroid cartilage, and cricoid cartilage) as landmarks during the surgery. However, the reliability of these landmarks has not been validated in actual practice.
OBJECTIVE: To find out which landmark is the most accurate for identifying the cervical levels in anterior cervical spine surgery.
METHODS: The lateral flexion and extension radiographs of

BACKGROUND: Common peroneal nerve (CPN) neuropathy may result from trauma or iatrogenic injury. Complete decompression requires precise incision placement. This study aimed to define surface landmarks and incisional guidelines for optimal CPN decompression.
METHODS: Thirty lower limbs from 15 cadavers were studied with knees flexed at 90 degrees. Dissection exposed the CPN, allowing measurement of compression sites between the intermuscular septa and distances from key anatomical landmarks. The CPN angle to the fibular axis and distances from the tibial tubercle and crest were measured by 2 o

The orbital tubercle, also known as Whitnall's tubercle, was first described by S.E. Whitnall in 1911 and is a significant anatomical landmark on the zygomatic bone that serves various structural and clinical functions. Understanding its anatomy is essential for protecting adjacent soft tissues during surgical procedures and its role in forensic studies. This study aims to assess the prevalence, precise location, and morphological characteristics of Whitnall's tubercle in adult human skulls. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 108 orbital fossae of 54 well-preserved adult hu

PURPOSE: Calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) injuries are harder to diagnose than anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) ones. This study aimed to clarify the fibular attachment of the CFL and verify the bony landmark for evaluating the CFL on ultrasonography.
METHODS: Fifty-nine ankles were used in this anatomical study. To confirm the control function of the CFL, we performed passive movement manually using cadaveric ankles and observed the ankle positions where the CFLs were tense. Histological observation of CFL attachment of the fibula was performed using Masson's trichrome stain. The ATFL and

Although the retromandibular transparotid approach (RTA) has been widely used to treat mandibular subcondyle fractures, the transient facial nerve injury (FNI) caused by this approach is not uncommon. The purpose of this paper was to present an anatomical landmark for RTA to treat subcondylar fractures, aiming to minimize FNI caused by the surgery. A total of 25 patients with subcondylar fractures but no FNI underwent RTA surgery. Intraoperatively, the plane of angulus oris was utilized as a reference to open the parotid and masseter tissues for exposing the fracture site. Postoperatively, FNI

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Access to the frontal sinuses is technically challenging owing to their anterosuperior location, diverse anatomy, close proximity to critical structures and the need to work in a relatively narrow space with angled-lens endoscopes and instruments. This study attempts to study the relationship of the first olfactory fiber with the frontal sinus posterior wall, assessing its fidelity as a surgical landmark during frontal sinus surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Anatomic study.
METHODS: Fifteen cadaveric specimens were studied. Measurements were obtained bilaterally using the data fr
