Anatomy of the iliolumbar ligament: a review of its anatomy and a magnetic resonance study.

Data of the postmortem studies of the iliolumbar ligament are controversial because of the number, complexity, and variability of the structures present in the lumbosacral region. The objective of this work was to study the anatomy of the iliolumbar ligament to resolve some clinical problems: (1) do anatomic bases exist that can explain the lumbar painful syndrome termed "iliolumbar syndrome?" (2) do iliolumbar ligament varieties exist that can influence lumbosacral joint stability? Magnetic resonance was used to analyze the anatomic structure of the iliolumbar ligament of live human beings. T

Microsurgical Anatomy Review of Bifrontal Limited Transbasal Approach - Quantitative and Anatomy Study.

INTRODUCTION: The bifrontal transbasal approach is an anterior midline skull base approach to anterior skull base, sellae region and, if needed, to posterior skull base in the midline, often used for tumoral lesions but also useful for vascular or infectious pathologies. METHODS: Descriptive anatomic study, 5 formalin-fixed human cadaveric heads were used injected with colored silicone. The dissection was made step-by-step to describe every anatomic structure encountered. The working distance was obtained from the posterior wall of the frontal sinus with and without orbital rim to the pituita

The Anatomy of the Atrioventricular Node.

The anatomical arrangement of the atrioventricular node has been likened to a riddle wrapped up in an enigma. There are several reasons for this alleged mystery, not least the marked variability in structure between different species. Lack of detailed knowledge of the location of the node relative to the atrial and ventricular septal structures has also contributed to previous misunderstandings. Recent studies comparing the findings of gross dissection with virtual dissection of living datasets, combined with access to a large number of serially sectioned human and animal hearts, have served t

[Variant anatomy of the gallbladder].

A doubled gallbladder recognized in postoperative period is presented. Intraoperatively, accessory bladder was recognized as a Caroli disease. However, we removed true gallbladder due to unavailable intraoperative cholangiography and risk of iatrogenic complications. Unclearly verified finding required MR cholangiography to confirm additional gallbladder.

Anatomy and Embryology of the Anus.

The anus is a complex structure formed from the hindgut. The anus can be further divided into the anal canal, the anal verge, and the anal margin. The anoderm is surrounded by the internal and external anal sphincters which are the distal continuation of pelvic floor muscles and the muscularis propria of the rectum. The anal canal is divided by the dentate or pectinate line with varying endothelium, bloody supply, and innervation based on location. The practicing colorectal surgeon needs to have a strong foundation in anorectal anatomy as it is integral to understanding the pathophysiology and

Adrenal Anatomy and Physiology.

The adrenal glands are paired endocrine organs that play a vital role in maintaining homeostasis by regulating blood pressure, metabolism, electrolyte balance, and the body's response to stress. Each gland comprises the adrenal cortex, which produces steroid hormones, and the adrenal medulla, responsible for catecholamine synthesis. The cortex is further divided into three functional zones, the zona glomerulosa (mineralocorticoids), zona fasciculata (glucocorticoids), and zona reticularis (androgens), while the medulla secretes adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine under sympathetic control.

Anatomy of the pituitary gland.

The pituitary gland, historically misconceived as a structure devoted to mucus excretion, has undergone centuries of anatomical and functional reinterpretation. From the ancient humoral theories of Galen to the molecular frameworks of modern embryology, this review offers a comprehensive historical and anatomical overview of the gland. Emphasis is placed on the evolution of terminology, the gland's dual embryologic origin, intricate vascularization, and topographic organization within the sella turcica. Clarifying historical controversies and integrating developmental, surgical, and neuroendoc

[Anatomy of the Cavernous Sinus].

The cavernous sinus is the crossroad of veins from various embryological origins, including the brain, eye, pituitary gland, dura, and cranium. Embryologically, the cavernous sinus is mainly formed from the pro-otic sinus; secondary anastomosis between the cavernous sinus and primitive tentorial sinus results in various anatomical variations in the drainage patterns of the superficial middle cerebral vein. Moreover, connections between the cavernous sinus and basal vein via the uncal vein, bridging vein, and petrosal vein from the superior petrosal sinus may exist. Retrograde drainage from the

Anorectal Anatomy and Function.

Anatomy of pelvic floor muscles has long been controversial. Novel imaging modalities, such as three-dimensional transperineal ultrasound imaging, MRI, and diffusion tensor imaging, have revealed unique myoarchitecture of the external anal sphincter and puborectalis muscle. High-resolution anal manometry, high-definition anal manometry, and functional luminal imaging probe are important new tools to assess anal sphincter and puborectalis muscle function. Increased understanding of the structure and function of anal sphincter complex/pelvic floor muscle has improved the ability to diagnose pati

Anatomy and Physiology of Headache.

Headache disorders can produce recurrent, incapacitating pain. Migraine and cluster headache are notable for their ability to produce significant disability. The anatomy and physiology of headache disorders is fundamental to evolving treatment approaches and research priorities. Key concepts in headache mechanisms include activation and sensitization of trigeminovascular, brainstem, thalamic, and hypothalamic neurons; modulation of cortical brain regions; and activation of descending pain circuits. This review will examine the relevant anatomy of the trigeminal, brainstem, subcortical, and cor

Anatomy of the Pericardial Space.

The pericardial cavity and its boundaries are formed by the reflections of the visceral and parietal pericardial layers. This space is an integral access point for epicardial interventions. As the pericardial layers reflect over the great vessels and the heart, they form sinuses and recesses, which restrict catheter movement. The epicardial vasculature is also important when performing nearby catheter ablation. The phrenic nerve and esophagus are other important structures to appreciate so as to avoid collateral injury. In addition, the Larrey space, or left sternocostal triangle, is a key ava

The immunological anatomy of the skin.

The skin is the outermost organ of the body and is continuously exposed to external pathogens. Upon inflammation, various immune cells pass through, reside in or are recruited to the skin to orchestrate diverse cutaneous immune responses. To achieve this, immune cells interact with each other and even communicate with non-immune cells, including peripheral nerves and the microbiota. Immunologically important anatomical sites, such as skin appendages (for example, hair follicles and sweat glands) or postcapillary venules, act as special portal sites for immune cells and for establishing tertiar

Nasal Anatomy and Function.

The nose is a complex structure important in facial aesthetics and in respiratory physiology. Nasal defects can pose a challenge to reconstructive surgeons who must re-create nasal symmetry while maintaining nasal function. A basic understanding of the underlying nasal anatomy is thus necessary for successful nasal reconstruction.

Endoscopic Anatomy of the Protympanum.

The protympanum, a final common pathway between the tympanic cavity and external environment, is gaining relevance due to the ease and completeness of visualization with angled endoscopes. Two primary conformations are described, quadrangular and triangular, and new anatomic structures such as the protiniculum, subtensor recess, and protympanic spine are defined. Surgical relevance of the protympanum is described with respect to ventilation, cholesteatoma, cerebrospinal fluid leak, otic neuralgia, and surgical access to the eustachian tube.

Anatomy of the Spinal Meninges.

BACKGROUND: The spinal meninges have received less attention than the cranial meninges in the literature, although several points remain debatable and poorly understood, like their phylogenesis, their development, and their interactions with the spinal cord. Their constancy among the chordates shows their crucial importance in central nervous system homeostasis and suggests a role far beyond mechanical protection of the neuraxis. OBJECTIVE: This work provides an extensive study of the spinal meninges, from an overview of their phylogenesis and embryology to a descriptive and topographic anato
