Predicting long bone loading from cross-sectional geometry.

Long bone loading histories are commonly evaluated using a beam model by calculating cross-sectional second moments of areas (SMAs). Without in vivo strain data, SMA analyses commonly make two explicit or implicit assumptions. First, while it has long been known that axial compression superimposed on bending shifts neutral axes away from cross-sectional area centroids, most analyses assume that cross-sectional properties calculated through the area centroid approximate cross-sectional strength. Second, the orientation of maximum bending rigidity is often assumed to reflect the orientation of p

Cross-sectional area measurement of soft tissue. A new casting method.

A new replica moulding technique for determining cross-sectional area has been developed. The accuracy of this technique has been investigated. Comparisons have been made with the area micrometer and the laser micrometer to establish the relative accuracy of each technique. The replica technique systematically underestimated the cross-sectional area by 6.2%. However, when this shrinkage artefact was corrected for, the residual error was +/- 1.8%. Relative to the corrected replica method, it was calculated that the area micrometer underestimated cross-sectional area by 16.2 +/- 6.9% (SD) and th

Pudendal Nerve Identified on Sectioned Images of Female Cadaveric Pelvis.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an anatomical atlas made of serially sectioned images of a female cadaver that clearly demonstrated the pudendal nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The courses of the pudendal nerve, internal pudendal artery, and internal pudendal vein were observed on the sectioned images of a female cadaver. The spatial relationship between the nerve and blood vessels was interpreted. RESULTS: Traces of the structures on the sectioned images showed that the sources of the sciatic and pudendal nerves were the fourth lumbar nerve to the second sacral nerve and the second to the fourth sacral

Living and post-mortem CT scans in the gross anatomy lab: A study investigating differences in first-year medical students' exam performance and perceptions.

Basic competency in radiological imaging is essential for physicians to identify and manage diseases. An optimal place in which to include imaging in the medical curriculum is during anatomy as students can correlate the 3D anatomy from their body donors with the 2D cross-sectional anatomy. The goal of this project was to enhance first-year medical students' knowledge of cross-sectional imaging in the gross anatomy lab and to investigate whether there are benefits to learning cross sectional imaging via scans from body donors versus living individuals. Student participant performance was evalu

CSGM: A R Package to Conduct a Robust Cross-Sectional Geometric Morphometric Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluating the relationships between the shape and biomechanical function of bone cross-sections can contribute novel insights towards human functional and evolutionary morphology. However, this research involves unique analytical and statistical challenges when comparing complex and multidimensional shape data to multivariate biomechanical variables. We developed the CSGM package in the R programming language to streamline statistical hypothesis testing on the geometric properties and shape of bone cross-sections, offering unique interactive and informative visualization plots. [The topographical and anatomical characteristic of the anterior part of the external auditory passage and the tympanic cavity].

The objective of the present work was to overview the currently available literature data on microtopographic anatomy of the anterior portion of the middle ear and the external auditory passage. Manipulations on these structures during miringoplasty surgery appear to be the most difficult and laborious operations because this space is anatomically very narrow and curved; moreover, it contains the important intimate structures of the middle ear and is located very close to the temporomandibular joint. The knowledge of microsurgical anatomy of the anterior part of the middle ear and the external

Adaptive cornea modeling from keratometric data.

PURPOSE: To introduce an iterative, multiscale procedure that allows for better reconstruction of the shape of the anterior surface of the cornea from altimetric data collected by a corneal topographer. METHODS: The report describes, first, an adaptive, multiscale mathematical algorithm for the parsimonious fit of the corneal surface data that adapts the number of functions used in the reconstruction to the conditions of each cornea. The method also implements a dynamic selection of the parameters and the management of noise. Then, several numerical experiments are performed, comparing it wit

Morphological and mechanical properties of the posterior leaflet chordae tendineae in the mitral valve.

A number of studies have investigated the morphological and mechanical properties of the chordae tendineae of the mitral valve, providing comparisons between basal, marginal, and strut chordae and between chordae at the anterior and posterior leaflets. This study contributes to the literature by comparing the failure load of the chordae tendineae attached to the three posterior leaflet scallops, the anterolateral scallop (P1), middle scallop (P2), and posteromedial scallop (P3) of the mitral valve. In all, 140 chordae isolated from 23 porcine hearts were tested. First, the cross-sectional diam

Application of 3D-printed pulmonary segment specimens in experimental teaching of sectional anatomy.

BACKGROUND: Lung cross-section is one of the emphases and challenges in sectional anatomy. Identification of the complex arrangement of intrapulmonary tubes such as bronchi, arteries, and veins in the lungs requires the spatial imagination of students. Three-dimensional (3D) printing has become increasingly used in anatomy education. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of 3D-printed specimens used for the experimental teaching of sectional anatomy. METHODS: A digital thoracic dataset was obtained and input into a 3D printer to print multicolor specimens of the pulmonary segment afte

Exploring the potential malleability of spatial skills through anatomy teaching: A quantitative study among medical students.

Spatial skills, or spatial ability, is the ability to visualize and mentally manipulate three-dimensional objects, and is essential to the study of anatomy. This study aims to investigate whether spatial skills required to infer cross-sectional images could be improved through anatomy learning, as well as gender differences in spatial skills. First-year medical students from 2016, 2018, and 2019 at King's College London undertook two online tests examining their ability to identify cross-sections of various anatomical structures and geometric solids from the Santa Barbara Solids Test (SBST). Diagnostic performance of EUS in non-jaundiced patients with an incidental finding of double duct sign on cross-sectional imaging: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dilatation of the pancreatic duct and common bile duct, known as double duct sign (DDS), suggests sinister pathology at the periampullary region. Non-jaundiced patients with incidental DDS and otherwise normal cross-sectional imaging present a diagnostic dilemma to the multidisciplinary team (MDT). The primary aim of this review was to assess the diagnostic yield of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in detecting causal pathology in this patient population. METHODS: A systematic literature search (Medline, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Cochrane database and PROSPERO) was performed t

Subxiphoid cross-sectional echocardiography in infants and children with congenital heart disease.

We developed anatomically related cross-sectional echocardiographic views to image the heart from the subxiphoid area in 100 children and infants with various forms of congenital heart disease studied prospectively before cardiac catheterization. Wide-angle cross-sectional views were achieved using a mechanical sector scanner in a scan plane oriented parallel to a line between the patient's shoulders (a coronal plane) showing the equivalent anatomy of an anteroposterior angiogram. The subxiphoid technique appeared to be better than chest wall-based imaging in demonstrating obstructive lesions

Comparing the outcomes of the technology-enhanced learning of sectional anatomy with and without preceding demonstrations: A study about the worked-example effect in anatomy education.

The examination of anatomical cross-sections can facilitate the understanding of spatial and clinical anatomy. Visualization technologies, with dynamic and interactive displays, can be used to learn sectional anatomy in a mostly self-directed manner. Nevertheless, this study hypothesized that the technology-enhanced learning of sectional anatomy is improved when initiated with explicit anatomical demonstrations-worked examples, as defined in Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) and Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML). Two learning experiments were conducted with Year 1 (N = 110) and Year 2 (
