Vascular anatomy in the suboccipital region and lateral cervical puncture.

The theoretical risk of injuring the vertebral artery or anomalous vessels at lateral cervical puncture is assessed. In just less than 30% of vertebral arteries the vessel overlies the lateral aspect of the spinal canal between the first and second cervical vertebrae, usually the antero-inferior quadrant. Directing the spinal needle to the posterior third of the canal virtually eliminates the possibility of injuring this and most anomalous arteries traversing the region. The likelihood of inducing subarachnoid haemorrhage by injuring these vessels would appear to be considerably less in latera

Defining regional variation in nasal anatomy to guide ethnic rhinoplasty: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Recently, there has been increasing focus on understanding nasal anatomy in ethnic populations and using it to guide rhinoplasty techniques in non-Caucasian patients. Many disparate groups have historically been inappropriately clustered based on geography. However, there has been little attention on describing regional differences within these populations. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. The search terms "African", "Asian", "Indian", "Middle Eastern", "Hispanic OR Mestizo", "rhinoplasty", "nasal", "anatomy", and "ethnic" were used in com

The Surgical Approach to Regional Anatomy (SATRA): Preserving hands-on pre-clerkship anatomy education through surgery-integrated dissection and specimen preparation.

Donor-based dissection in undergraduate medical education enhances clinical readiness and provides insight into surgical specialties. However, opportunities for surgically integrated dissection remain limited in pre-clerkship curricula. We developed the Surgical Approach to Regional Anatomy (SATRA), a resource-efficient surgical dissection program to provide learners with an integrated dissection experience while generating reusable teaching specimens for future anatomy education. This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and perceived educational value of SATRA. Thirty-three second-year medi

[Applied anatomy of the vascularity in the ileocolic region and its clinical significance].

To understand the characteristics of the patterns of arteries and veins distributed over the ileocolic segment, 50 cadavers were studied by gross-anatomy. The arteries, veins and their paracolic anastomoses distributed over ileocecal region, ascending colon and transverse colon were observed. The results showed that the distribution pattern of venous vessel was far more constant than that of artery, that the arrangements of artery in the ileocolic segment were classified into 7 types, and there were no interruption of paracolic anastomoses between arteries. But in 3 specimens the paracolic ana

Topographical anatomy of the posterior elbow region during fetal development.

We studied the topography of the elbow region with special regard to the ulnar nerve during fetal life. Plastinated 600 microns thick sections through the right and left arms of ten fetuses with a crown-rump length (CRL) of 105 to 360 mm and of a newborn infant were investigated. The ulnar groove does not appear on the dorsal side of the medial humeral epicondyle earlier than at a crown-rump length of 130 mm. It provides the entrance into a formerly described fibro-osseous tunnel called the cubital tunnel. Its floor is formed by the posterior bundle of the ulnar collateral ligament, which bulg

The lumbar region localization using bone anatomy feature graphs.

The automatic localization of the lumbar region is essential for the diagnosis of lumbar diseases, the study of lumbar morphology, and the surgical planning. Although the existing researches have made great progress, it still faces several challenges. First, the various lumbar diseases and pathologies cause different abnormalities in the lumbar shape and appearance. Second, the numbers of lumbar vertebrae are irregular (some people have an additional vertebra L6). To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel lumbar region localization method based on bone anatomy feature graphs. Specifically

Anatomy of the fasciae and fascial spaces of the maxillofacial and the anterior neck regions.

This review provides an overview of comprehensive knowledge regarding the anatomy of the fasciae and fascial spaces of the maxillofacial and the anterior neck regions, principally from the standpoint of oral surgery, whose descriptions have long been puzzling and descriptively much too complex. The maxillofacial and the anterior neck regions are divided into four portions: the portions superficial and deep to the superficial layer of the deep cervical fascia (SfDCF) including its rostral extension to the face, the intermediate portion sandwiched by the splitting SfDCF, and the superficial port

Surgical anatomy of the orbital region, local anesthesia and general considerations.

Orbital region may be divided into four sectors: medial canthus, lateral canthus, lower lid and upper lid. A vertical section of a lid shows 5 layers: skin, subcutaneous tissue with orbicularis muscle, fibrous layer (tarsus-aponeurosis), plain fibers muscle layer (Muller's), conjunctiva. The first two layers form the "anterior lamella" and the other ones the "posterior lamella", divided by the grey line. In this review Authors describe with all details the orbital region and the eyelid layers, considering the most important concepts for surgery. Finally they resume basics of local anesthesia i

The "postcricoid cushion": observations on the vascular anatomy of the posterior cricoid region.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the cyclical vascular enlargement that occurs in the postcricoid region during the expiratory phase on an infant's cry, and to consider the anatomic, physiologic, and clinical implications of this phenomenon, which we term the "postcricoid cushion." DESIGN: A total of 125 consecutive office fiber-optic laryngoscopic examinations in children and infants were reviewed for engorgement and vascular discoloration of the postcricoid region. Presence of a postcricoid cushion in relation to patient age was reviewed. A comprehensive literature review was also performed. SETTING

A short postgraduate anatomy course may improve the junior surgical residents' anatomy knowledge for the nerves of the inguinal region.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common operations in a junior surgical resident's postgraduate training. Short recall courses can improve junior residents' anatomy knowledge and results in better surgical outcomes. We aimed to investigate the effect of a short course on anatomical competency during inguinal hernia repairs. METHODS: During the first 25 inguinal hernia repairs, two junior residents were asked to identify iliohypogastric, ilioinguinal, and genital branch of genitofemoral nerves. Then, the residents were given a short recall course by anatomists. Aft

Botulinum Toxin as Targeted Neuromodulation in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: An Anatomy-Informed Mechanistic Review.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a heterogeneous and disabling chronic pain condition characterized by maladaptive neuroplasticity involving persistent peripheral nociceptive input, autonomic dysregulation, and central sensitization. Despite increasing clinical use, the role of botulinum toxin in CRPS remains controversial, with inconsistent outcomes reported across studies. This review synthesizes mechanistic, translational, and clinical evidence suggesting that these apparent inconsistencies may be partly explained by heterogeneity in anatomical targeting and route of administration

Analysis of the regional anatomy of the retro-oesophageal right subclavian artery and surrounding structures.

BACKGROUND: The retro-oesophageal right subclavian artery (RRSA) is a congenital anomalous branching of the arch of the aorta. Because its incidence is very low, it has not been fully understood how the RRSA develops during embryogenesis, and thus accumulation of observed findings in newly found cases is important to elucidate the aetiology of the RRSA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We encountered a case of the RRSA during the course of gross anatomy dissection for medical students. RESULTS: The main findings in the present observations are that (a) the RRSA arose from the right side wall of the ar

Ultrasound of the ulnar-palmar region of the wrist: normal anatomy and anatomic variations.

Ultrasound (US) assessment of the wrist is frequently used for the evaluation of carpal tunnel due to high frequency of local compression of the median nerve (MN), but the ulnar-palmar wrist region (UPWR) has received limited attention in the medical literature. The possibilities of US in the assessment of UPWR are therefore likely underestimated by sonologists. This review article is focused on the US assessment of the normal anatomy and anatomic variations of the UPWR. The anatomy of this region of the wrist is complex and less studied than the radial side. In an effort to simplify it and to

Extraoral anatomy in CBCT – a literature review. Part 4: Pharyngocervical region.

This review about extraoral anatomy depicted in cone beam computed tomography describes the pharyngocervical region. Large (≥ 8 × 8 cm) field of views of the maxilla and/or mandible will inevita-bly depict the pharyngocervical region that com-prises the posterior upper airway, the pharyngeal part of the digestive tract, as well as the cervical segment of the spine. The latter consists of seven cervical vertebrae (C1-C7) with corresponding distinctive features, i.e., the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2). In addition, cervical vertebrae serve as ref-erences for the vertical position of anatomical st
