Corneal surgery is a common and essential part of veterinary ophthalmology and ranges from simple linear keratotomy for indolent ulcers to penetrating keratoplasty for restoration of optical clarity. Success in corneal surgery relies on an understanding of corneal anatomy, physiology and wound healing, meticulous attention to detail, microsurgical equipment and techniques, and use of appropriate preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative medications. Surgical management of corneal disease is indicated for corneal ulceration, excision of a mass lesion, reconstructive procedures, therapeuti

No model exists to train the handling skills required for successful performance of rigid rhinoscopy in veterinary patients. The complex anatomy of the nasal cavity, the limited space between turbinates, and the propensity of the mucosa to bleed with slight trauma make thorough examination of a nasal cavity difficult. The goal of this study was development and initial testing of a low fidelity canine rigid rhinoscopy training model for veterinary novices. A model comprising three tubes of various lumen diameters that were connected to a conduction system was created. Each tube contained three

Coronavirus disease-2019 (Covid-19) disrupted the in-person teaching format of anatomy. To study changes in gross anatomy education that occurred during August-December, 2020 compared to before the pandemic, an online survey was distributed to anatomy educators. The 191 responses received were analyzed in total and by academic program, geographic region, and institution type. Cadaver use decreased overall (before: 74.1 ± 34.1%, during: 50.3 ± 43.0%, P < 0.0001), as well as across allopathic and osteopathic medicine, therapy, undergraduate, and veterinary programs (P < 0.05), but remained uncha

BACKGROUND: Callithrix jacchus, it is a species highly targeted by wild animal traffickers and, when apprehended, they need veterinary care. For safe therapeutic procedures, knowledge of anatomy is essential, as well as for diagnostic by imaging, good radiographic positioning is essential.
METHODS: The anatomy of the paranasal sinuses and the radiographic projections was described using 10 carcasses of common marmosets. Radiographs were taken in two panoramic views of their head: profile and frontal-naso. For the anatomical study, paramedian and transverse macroscopic sections and microscopic

Gastrointestinal diseases pose problems to captive common marmosets. Therefore, knowledge of the anatomy of the arterial supply to the gastrointestinal tract is an important prerequisite for implementing appropriate veterinary care. The common marmoset's intestinal tract has a well-developed cecum specialized for the fermentative digestion of tree gums. This specialized gastrointestinal tract may have a unique pattern of arterial distribution. This study aimed to elucidate the species-specific gastrointestinal tract arterial anatomy of the common marmoset. We traced the celiac, cranial mesente

Cardiac computed tomography (cCT) has emerged as a valuable imaging modality in veterinary cardiology and can be used to visualize and understand diseases that affect the mitral and tricuspid valves of dogs. While echocardiography remains the primary diagnostic tool for atrioventricular valve disease, cCT offers excellent spatial and temporal resolution, at the same time overcoming the limitations posed by acoustic windows. This review article describes the technical aspects of cCT in dogs emphasizing administration of contrast medium, electrocardiographic gating, and scan timing. Specific rec

BACKGROUND: Pigs have long been employed as an animal model for knee-related diseases. However, vascular anatomy around the pig knee is rare. The objective of this study was to explore the vascular anatomy around the pig knee from the perspective of comparative medicine.
METHODS: Fifteen fresh cadaveric hindlimbs of hybrid pigs were used in this study. The femoral artery was infused with red- or black-colored latex. The origination, course, and branches of the arteries around the pig knee were observed.
RESULTS: The femoral artery around the pig knee has the following branches: the saphenous

Diseases of the back of horse and man are not comparable owing to the great difference in anatomy and posture. Veterinary surgeons, particularly in the United Kingdom, are often requested to account for a poor performance due to suspected "back trouble" but a complete examination of the horse's back is most difficult and care must be taken first to exclude any limb or foot lesions. Diseases of the bones, nerves and muscles are briefly discussed. Diagnosis must be improved by new radiographic and biochemical tests before the significance of back lesions can be assessed or even treated.

OBJECTIVE: To determine ultrasonographic features and reference values of the anatomy of the abdomen of common rats (Rattus norvegicus).
ANIMALS: 20 adult male and 20 adult female rats.
PROCEDURES: A complete abdominal ultrasonographic examination was performed with the rats sedated. The cadavers of 4 rats were used for anatomic comparisons. Two cadavers were dissected and 2 cadavers were frozen and then cross-sectioned by use of an electric bandsaw. Slices were cleaned with water and photographed on each side. Correlations between variables were determined.
RESULTS: The ultrasonographic an

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) allows imaging of the heart through the oesophagus using a special transducer mounted on a modified endoscope. The proximity to the heart and minimal intervening structures enables the acquisition of high-resolution images that are consistently superior to routine transthoracic echocardiography and optimal imaging of the heart base anatomy and related structures. TEE provides high-quality real-time imaging free of ionizing radiation, making it an ideal instrument not only for diagnostic purposes, but also for monitoring surgical or minimally invasive car

Flexible gastrointestinal endoscopy in small animal veterinary practice requires psychomotor and visuospatial skills that differ from those used in open surgery. Training opportunities are often limited by reliance on live animals, which raises ethical and logistical challenges, while high-fidelity simulators remain cost-prohibitive for many programs. This creates a gap in accessible, early-stage endoscopy training. This Teaching Tip describes the development and implementation of a set of low-cost, modular simulation models designed to support acquisition of core endoscopic skills in veterina

Acanthocephaliasis is a zoonotic parasitic infection of vertebrates. The phylum Acanthocephala contains nearly 1500 acanthocephalan species. The Archiacanthocephala class is observed in terrestrial habitats and usually has a large, spineless trunk. Acanthocephalans are parasitic worms that use insects as intermediate hosts in their two-host life cycles. Insects, millipedes, and crustaceans in terrestrial areas serve as intermediate hosts and birds and mammals as definitive hosts. Acanthocephalans collected from the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) found dead on the road to Sarıkamış-Kars in 1995 and st

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2021eng
With the increasing use of CT and MRI for diagnostic imaging and planning of interventional procedures, it is important for veterinary radiologists to be familiar with variations in normal vascular anatomy and not mistake them for pathology. The arterial blood supply to the cranial abdominal viscera is provided by the celiac and the cranial mesenteric arteries. A common celiacomesenteric trunk (CMT) has been reported as a rare anatomical variant in dogs. The goals of this retrospective, observational, cross-sectional prevalence study were to determine the prevalence of a CMT in dogs with non-a

BACKGROUND: Brachycephalic dogs with pulmonary stenosis are known to have a higher incidence of concurrent coronary artery abnormalities than non-brachycephalic breeds, which increases risk when performing balloon valvuloplasty. The use of ECG-gated CT angiography has been reported for the evaluation of coronary arteries in normal dogs and dogs with pulmonary stenosis. The purpose of this study was to report findings of coronary artery origination and morphology of main branches using ECG-gated CT angiography in brachycephalic dogs with pulmonary stenosis.
METHODS: An ECG-gated CT angiographi

The sternum, essential for protecting intrathoracic structures and enabling thoracic stability and breathing motion, is a vital part of small animal thoracic anatomy. Evaluating the sternum is crucial in small animal practice, with typical anatomy including eight to nine sternebrae and species-specific variations. Congenital sternal anomalies, such as pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, and sternal cleft, though rare, can have significant clinical implications. Sternal cleft, characterized by incomplete fusion of sternebrae, is particularly uncommon in veterinary literature, with limited docum

Metamizole (dipyrone) is a widely used non-opioid analgesic in both human and animal medicine. Metamizole's safety has been the topic of numerous opposing debates, given the fact that in certain countries metamizole is frequently used as an over-the-counter (OTC) medicine, while in others it is banned due to the risk of agranulocytosis. Further, small mammals such as rabbits, ferrets, rodents, and hedgehogs have become some of the most common pets present in veterinary practice, and each of these species has specific analgesic needs due to their anatomy and physiology. The key to providing app

The plastination technique is a recently developed option to preserve biological tissues widely used in human and veterinary anatomy. This process allows one to obtain real, safe, clean, dry, resistant and permanently stable material without any additional treatment or maintenance. All these advantages are associated with the rapid expansion of plastination during recent decades in a high number of educational institutions. However, the studies of parasite conservation through plastination are scarce, although the material obtained has a high quality, as prior references have shown. In this st
