Epidural Anesthesia Is Effective in Lower-Extremity Burn Pain Treatment: A Case Report.

Burn wounds cause pain through various mechanisms, making pain management challenging. Although treatment and management strategies for healing burns have been developed, clear guidelines for analgesia in burn injuries are lacking. Opioids are commonly used for pain relief, but regional anesthesia performed by anesthesiologists has shown effectiveness in some cases. We encountered a case in which epidural anesthesia was effective for analgesia of a lower-extremity burn injury in a 19-year-old man. The patient with burn injuries to his lower extremities was transferred to the emergency departme

Regional anesthesia for distal radius fracture repair: a multicenter retrospective cohort study of perioperative outcomes and postoperative healthcare utilization.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures in adults and are frequently treated surgically. The impact of regional anesthesia on perioperative outcomes and early postoperative healthcare utilization remains unclear. This study evaluated the association between brachial plexus block use and immediate perioperative outcomes and 30-day postoperative healthcare utilization in patients undergoing surgical repair of a distal radius fracture. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using data from an integrated US healthcare system, including adult patients w

Straight-Up Approach to Bedside Ureteral Stents.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate placement of bedside double-j ureteral stents in an Emergency Department or hospital floor setting. BACKGROUND: Ureteral stent placement is a potentially lifesaving intervention and is one of the most common procedures performed by urologists. Although this procedure is typically performed in the operating room, studies have shown placing ureteral stents at the bedside could potentially decrease delay in stent placement, alleviate financial burdens of operating room use, decrease radiation exposure, and avoid general anesthesia risks1-5. We demonstrate a safe and eff

Retrospectively analyze and compare the efficacy and safety of thoracoscopic-assisted Nuss repair of pectus excavatum under intubation anesthesia and non-intubation anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopic-assisted Nuss repair is a commonly used method for treating pectus excavatum, which has always been performed under tracheal intubation and general anesthesia. However, general anesthesia with endotracheal intubation can produce intubation and anesthetic drug related complications. In non-intubation anesthesia, laryngeal mask is used instead of tracheal intubation without muscle relaxants and small doses of sedative and analgesic drugs. Therefore, non-intubation anesthesia can reduce complications and speed up postoperative recovery. This study retrospectively analyze

Evaluation of a strategy to shorten the time to surgery in patients on antiplatelet therapy with a proximal femur fracture (AFFEcT Study): Study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with femur fracture benefit from early surgery. Recent reports suggest that regional anesthesia may be superior to general anesthesia in these patients. Early surgery under spinal anesthesia could be performed safely by determining platelet function in patients receiving antiplatelet agents. METHODS: Multicenter, randomized, open-label, parallel clinical trial expected to include 156 patients ≥ 18 years of age under chronic treatment with antiplatelet agents who develop a proximal femur fracture. [Influence of anesthesia on surgical site infections].

Surgical site infections (SSI) are the most frequent cause of impaired perioperative wound healing, lead to increased postoperative morbidity, mortality and length of hospital stay and are therefore a relevant perioperative complication. In addition to numerous measures taken by the surgical departments, there are anesthesiological options that can help to reduce the risk of SSI. In addition to heat, volume and transfusion management these include, for example, the use of antibiotics and the choice of the anesthesia procedure. This article is intended to provide fundamental knowledge on SSI, s

Area Deprivation Index, Institutional Practice, and Utilization of Neuraxial Anesthesia in Total Knee Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Access to healthcare contributes to challenges in controlling postoperative pain in patients of lower socioeconomic status (SES) undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Neuraxial anesthesia (NA) reduces pain and opioid use after TKA. This study used the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) to evaluate associations between SES and NA utilization in primary TKA. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of TKAs performed between August 15, 2023, and April 12, 2024, at four hospitals. Revision TKA and bilateral TKA were excluded. The ADI was used to stratify patients into quintiles by

Regional anesthesia in trauma patients: a quality improvement study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury is associated with severe pain that is often inadequately managed. Opioids remain the mainstay of pain management in this population because of their ease of use. However, opioids have significant side effects including nausea, delirium, and respiratory depression. Regional anesthesia has been demonstrated in the perioperative setting to provide superior analgesia with fewer side effects and a reduced length of stay. Similarly, regional anesthesia has been shown to improve morbidity for extremity fractures and dislocations when introduced early. METHODS: This was
