A 22-year-old woman presenting with postpartum haemorrhagic shock at 4243 m altitude required anaesthesia to identify and treat the source of bleeding. Slow intravenous administration of ketamine (0.5 mg x kg(-1)) resulted in deep anaesthesia and apnoea requiring hand ventilation for 5 min. An 8-month-old, Domestic Shorthair male cat was presented for elective orchiectomy. Preanaesthetic clinical examination was unremarkable. The anaesthetic plan included intramuscular medetomidine (30 μg kg-1) and tramadol (2 mg kg-1) for premedication followed by intramuscular ketamine (8 mg kg-1) for induction of general anaesthesia.
