Angiomyolipoma of the anterior mediastinum.

Angiomyolipoma is a benign tumor composed of varying proportions of smooth muscle cells, blood vessels, and adipose tissue that most commonly occurs in the kidney. Sporadic lesions and lesions arising in the setting of the tuberous sclerosis complex have been reported in extrarenal sites. We present the case of an incidentally discovered angiomyolipoma in the anterior mediastinum. Thymoma was suspected clinically, and the lesion was composed mainly of spindled-to-epithelioid cells arranged in a histologic pattern reminiscent of hemangiopericytoma, a pattern that has been described in thymoma.

Primary angiomyolipoma of the pancreas.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare tumor characterized histologically by a mixture of spindle cells, adipose tissue, epithelioid cells, and blood vessels. AML usually occurs in the kidney but can involve the liver and, rarely, other sites. We describe a 74-year-old woman without tuberous sclerosis who presented with spontaneous hemorrhage into a primary AML of the pancreas and underwent curative surgical resection. We are aware of only one previous report describing a clear cell "sugar" tumor of the pancreas, which probably represents a monotypic epithelioid variant of AML. The pancreas should be

Benign Neoplasm of Kidney: Angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipoma is one of the renal benign neoplasms. The most of the angiomyolipomas are asymptomatic and found incidentally with ultrasound. They are more prevalent in patients with tuberous sclerosis. It is very important to make differential diagnosis from other renal neoplasm such as renal cell carcinoma. Growth rate is higher among pregnant women suggest that the hormones may play a role in the stimulation of angiomyolipoma. The most common serious presentation is rupture and hemorrhage, and sometimes it can lead to shock. Adequate diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up are very important in

Transcatheter embolisation of renal angiomyolipoma.

INTRODUCTION: Angiomyolipomas (AML) are rare benign renal tumours which are associated with aneurysms that can cause haemorrhage. Embolisation of AML greater than 4 cm with a variety of embolic agents is now the first-line treatment in these cases. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent AML embolisation at Beaumont Hospital from 2000 to 2006 to review the efficacy of embolisation in the treatment of AMLs. RESULTS: There were six patients in total (n = 6). One patient (16%) had a background of tuberous sclerosis. Half of the patients presented acutely with bl

Clinical presentation of epithelioid angiomyolipoma.

OBJECTIVE: Epithelioid angiomyolipomas (AML) of the kidney are malignant tumors with aggressive clinical behavior. METHODS: We reviewed cases of epithelioid AML recently diagnosed at our institution to highlight the spectrum of clinical presentations. RESULTS: In all cases, renal lesions seen on computed tomography were suspicious for renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Histologically, these tumors can resemble RCC. The diagnosis of epithelioid AML was established by positive staining for melanoma and smooth muscle cell markers, and presence of perivascular epithelioid cells. One patient presented w

Sporadic oral angiomyolipoma. Case report.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare, benign tumour composed of a variable proportion of lipocytes, smooth muscle and thick-walled blood vessels. AML is part of a family of tumours arising from perivascular epithelioid cells (PEComas), and many cases are associated with tuberous sclerosis, with the kidney being the most frequent site involved. We report a case of sporadic AML in the hard palate of a 52-year-old male, an extremely unusual location for this tumour. Differentiation from other benign and malignant oral mesenchymal lesions depends on recognition of the three histologic components, and im

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma: a case report.

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma is a recently recognized tumor entity. We report a case of epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the kidney that occurred in a 70-year-old female. The patient presented with massive abdominal hemorrhage and shock. There was no history of tuberous sclerosis complex. The tumor consisted of smooth muscle, adipocytes, small-to-medium-sized hyalinized blood vessels and numerous pleomorphic epithelioid cells with clear to eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitosis was exceptional and no glandular pattern was recognizable. Immunohistochemically the epithelioid cells were strongly positive for

Intraglomerular microlesions in renal angiomyolipoma.

A unique case of bilateral multiple intrarenal angiomyolipomas in a 21-year-old woman with tuberous sclerosis is reported. The microscopic examination showed peculiar intraglomerular microlesions, epithelioid areas, microscopic foci of renal cell carcinoma and renal cysts, and the classical features of angiomyolipoma lesion. HMB-45 positivity was detected within some nodules and epithelioid areas. Intraglomerular microlesions were composed of adipose and smooth-muscle cells within the glomerular capillary tuft. These lesions, which were continuous with the capillary tuft, did not show any atta

[Immunohistochemical analysis of renal angiomyolipoma].

Immunohistochemical analysis of 6 cases of renal angiomyolipoma not related to tuberous sclerosis proved the same rate of expression of HMB 45 and NKI/C3 as well in epithelioid smooth muscle cells of the tumours. Beyond this, an unspecific expression of alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin was found which has not been mentioned in the literature up to now.

[Renal angiomyolipoma. Our case histories].

We reviewed the cases of angiomyolipoma that had been diagnosed and treated in our urology services from 1978 to 1991. The study showed a higher incidence in the females; it frequently presented as a solitary tumor; a high specificity was found for the US (hyperechoic mass) and CT (areas of low attenuation ratio) findings. Owing to these diagnostic techniques, conventional surgery is no longer the only treatment. Embolization is considered to be the first therapeutic approach.

Renal Epithelioid Angiomyolipoma in Children.

Renal angiomyolipoma is a rare cause of renal tumor in children. Most are associated with tuberous sclerosis, and the classic type is observed more commonly. Epithelioid angiomyolipoma is even rarer with only limited case reports and series published in literature, most of which are of adult patients. We describe a 12-year-old boy, a diagnosed patient of tuberous sclerosis, who presented with pain in the left flank. On evaluation, it was found to have a left renal mass with the clinical picture suggestive of renal cell carcinoma. Partial nephrectomy was performed and histopathology revealed ep

Sclerosing variant of epithelioid angiomyolipoma.

Presented herein are two unusual epithelioid angiomyolipomas (AML) displaying prominent stromal sclerosis. Both patients were middle-aged women without a clinical history of tuberous sclerosis. One patient (case 1) had a 2 cm lesion arising in the renal cortex, and another (case 2) had a pararenal retroperitoneal tumor measuring 13 cm. Both tumors were composed of sheets or nests of polygonal epithelioid or short spindle cells having uniform round to oval nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm with cords of hyalinized sclerotic stroma between them. The tumor in case 2 had small areas of mature-look

The authors present a case of duodenal angiomyolipoma. Angiomyolipoma is a benign neoplasm, the most common site being the kidney. Extrarenal angiomyolipomas are rare. Only one case of duodenal angiomyolipoma has been reported. A 66 year old man presented with GI bleeding for two years. Endoscopy revealed a duodenal polyp which on histopathology revealed features of angiomyolipoma. On immunohistochemistry, smooth muscle component was positive for Smooth Muscle Actin. HMB-45 showed mild focal positivity. Patient had no history of tuberous sclerosis. Surgical excision of angiomyolipoma is usuall

Laparoscopic cryoablation of renal angiomyolipoma.

PURPOSE: Angiomyolipomas are rare benign renal tumors which occasionally require intervention. Preservation of renal function is essential when treating renal angiomyolipoma in patients with multiple or bilateral lesions. We report on the first series of patients with renal angiomyolipoma treated with laparoscopic cryoablation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven patients with pathologically confirmed renal angiomyolipoma underwent laparoscopic cryoablation. Transperitoneal surgery with intraoperative ultrasound was performed, followed by clinical monitoring with creatinine and axial imaging. RESUL

[Renal angiomyolipoma rupture during pregnancy].

A 40 year-old 2nd gesta pregnant woman (34.5 weeks of amenorhea) was admitted to hospital for abdominal pain and arterial hypotension which were rapidly related to a retroperitoneal haematoma due to left kidney bleeding. Emergency cesarean delivery under general anaesthesia was undertaken because of foetal distress. Exploration of the retroperitonal space after foetal extraction confirmed the presence of a large haematoma and abnormal left renal morphology. The retroperitoneal space was drained without any further intervention. Subsequently, abdominal and thoracic computerised tomographic exam

Parametrial angiomyolipoma with multicystic change.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyolipoma is a distinctive benign neoplasm of the renal origin. Rare extrarenal instances of angiomyolipoma have been documented at various body sites. A case of extrarenal angiomyolipoma arising from the parametrial soft tissues is described in the present report. CASE: A woman, age 40 years, presented with a large abdominopelvic mass. CT scan study revealed a solid mass with interspersed cystic areas and suggested the tumor mass to be attached in the pelvic soft tissues of the broad ligament, partly surrounding the lower uterus. These findings were corroborated by the perop

[Clinical evaluation of renal angiomyolipoma].

Between April 1980 and December 1999, 23 kidneys in 20 patients were diagnosed as having renal angiomyolipoma at our institution. The patients were 6 males and 14 females aged 24 to 79 years, with a mean age of 55.4 years. Two patients had associated tuberous sclerosis and 3 had bilateral disease. Of all patients the main clinical symptoms were pain (45%) and palpable mass (40%); 5 patients (25%) had asymptomatic lesions. The size of the tumor ranged from 1.3 to 24 cm (mean 7.7 cm). Treatment consisted of nephrectomy in 9 patients, partial nephrectomy in 6 and selective embolization in one. Pr

[Renal angiomyolipoma: diagnosis and treatment].

In 10 years the diagnosis of renal angiomyolipoma (RAML) was made in 14 patients (male-to female ratio 1:3.7) at our institution; 1 case was associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS) and 1 case had regional lymph node involvement. A statistical study was done on data taken from 739 cases of RAML in the Japanese literature, including our cases. The male to female ratio was 1 to 3. Twenty eight percent of the cases were associated with TS. The ratio of bilateral cases to the unilateral one was 1 to 3. The main clinical signs were flank pain, abdominal mass, hematuria and fever elevation. Recently
