We assessed the prevalence of the rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, in rats and snails in Toamasina, Madagascar, using molecular techniques. Although no human cases of neuroangiostrongyliasis have been reported in Madagascar, the pathogen's presence in definitive hosts (2.5%, 2/78) and intermediate hosts (26.9%, 35/130) reveals active circulation and potential zoonotic risk.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is an emerging parasite that is the most common cause of eosinophilic meningitis worldwide. Human infection typically presents with headache, neck stiffness, and paresthesia. We report a case of a woman with PCR positive A. cantonensis infection who presented with symptoms of small fiber neuropathy (SFN) but no headache. SFN was confirmed by skin biopsy. After failing standard medications for neuropathy, she was treated with intravenous lidocaine with considerable improvement. However, she required medications for 1 year to treat her chronic neuropathy. Infection by

Angiostrongylus cantonensis causes severe neurological disorders in a wide range of warm-blooded animals, including several avian species. A laboratory isolate of A. cantonensis originating from French Polynesia, genotyped as clade 2, was used to assess the effect of experimental infection in chicken and Japanese quail. Low dose groups of birds were infected orally by 100 L3 larvae, high dose groups by 1500 L3 larvae and the birds in the third group were fed three infected snails, mimicking a natural infection. Clinical signs during the first week after infection, haematology, biochemistry, gr

Introduction. Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a nematode from the superfamily Metastrongyloidea, whose etymology is "roundworm that lives in blood vessels". This parasite can be found from the southern United States to northern Argentina and southern Brazil. In 1983, Morera and Ruiz published the first case of a testicular artery occlusion by A. costaricensis. Case Presentation. A five year old boy presented with eight days of pain, denying trauma backgrounds and followed with an increase of volume. The treatment was a right simply orchiectomy, finding necrosis of the testicle, the biopsy sho

Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a zoonotic parasitic nematode that causes abdominal or intestinal angiostrongyliasis in humans. It is endemic to the Americas. Although the mitochondrial genome of the Brazil taxon has been published, there is no available mitochondrial genome data on the Costa Rica taxon. We report here the complete mitochondrial genome of the Costa Rica taxon and its genetic differentiation from the Brazil taxon. The whole mitochondrial genome was obtained from next-generation sequencing of genomic DNA. It had a total length of 13,652 bp, comprising 36 genes (12 protein-codin

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the main causative agent of human neuroangiostrongyliasis, is a food-borne parasitic zoonosis, particularly in Southeast Asia and Mainland China. Angiostrongylus malaysiensis, a cryptic species, has not been unequivocally identified as a causative agent for human angiostrongyliasis. Here, we investigated a local incidence of human angiostrongyliasis in Kalasin Province, northeastern part of Thailand. Field and laboratory investigations, clinical symptoms, and treatment of the disease are also discussed. Five sera and three cerebrospinal fluid samples were taken fro

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the leading cause of human eosinophilic meningitis, is an emerging zoonotic parasite of growing public health concern. Current therapeutic options show limited efficacy, particularly against larval stages, underscoring the need for new anthelmintic agents. Natural products derived from Brazilian biodiversity represent a promising source for discovery of new bioactive compounds. In this study, we evaluated the anthelmintic activity of sakuranetin, a naturally occurring flavanone from Brazilian plant Baccharis lateralis (Asteraceae), against first-stage (L1) and thir

Abdominal angiostrongyliasis (AA) is an emerging infection caused by the nematode Angiostrongylus costaricensis. Human infection occurs through ingestion of food contaminated with infective third-stage larvae (L3). Although endemic in Central and South America, AA remains underdiagnosed and underrecognized in clinical practice. We report the case of a female patient with a history of bariatric surgery, residing in southern Brazil, who presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain and mild eosinophilia. Initial diagnostic hypotheses included infectious colitis, neoplasia and ischemic proce

INTRODUCTION: Human angiostrongyliasis (HA) is a neurological helminthic disease caused by the lung worm Angiostrongylus cantonensis. It is suspected in the combination of travel or a residence in an endemic area and eosinophilic meningitis. In Mayotte, an island in the Indian Ocean, cases are rare but regular. The main objective of our study was to describe the epidemiological and diagnosis clues of HA in Mayotte. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the contribution of Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT- PCR) for the diagnosis of HA, delineate the characteristics of the local trans

An immunocompetent man developed malaise, fever, progressive weight loss, eosinophilia, and transient pulmonary infiltrates that responded to steroid treatment but recurred after its discontinuation. Examinations of feces, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and pulmonary tissue obtained during a 50-day period of hospitalization yielded negative results. When a new bronchoalveolar lavage sample and a new pulmonary biopsy specimen showed nematode larvae and adult worms, treatment with thiabendazole was started. However, therapy with this agent and then with mebendazole had no impact on the patient's

Biological infections of the zoonotic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis have caused neuroangiostrongyliasis (NAS) in many people around the world and have impacted the neurological health of various wild and domestic animals. Several Caribbean countries have reported cases of NAS caused by the rat lungworm; however, the most recent study in Puerto Rico was in 1984. Here, we conducted quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to evaluate levels of A. cantonensis DNA in 205 gastropod samples from 20 different species across eight sites in Puerto Rico. An overall estimate of 35.6% (n = 73/2

Rats, being synanthropic, are hosts to agents of zoonotic diseases that pose a threat to human and domestic animal health. The nematode parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis, commonly known as the rat lungworm, is no exception; it can cause potentially fatal neural disease in humans, dogs and other species. The distribution of A. cantonensis (haplotypes SYD.1 and Ac13) and its close relative, Angiostrongylus mackerrasae is not well understood in Australia. We investigated the prevalence of Angiostrongylus in rats in Sydney, Australia, primarily via faecal qPCR, and identified the species and ha

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is an invasive nematode parasite that causes eosinophilic meningitis in many vertebrate hosts, including humans. This parasite is spreading rapidly through the six continents, with Europe being the final frontier. Sentinel surveillance may be a cost-effective strategy to monitor the pathogen's arrival to new geographical regions. Necropsy, followed by tissue digestion, is often used to recover helminth parasites from vertebrate host tissues, however, to detect brain parasites, this protocol is poorly utilized. Our brain digestion protocol is easily performed and 1)

Angiostrongylosis caused by metastrongyloid nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum is an emerging parasitic disease in Europe and the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is considered as a main reservoir species for this parasite. Little is known about the role of other wild canids in the epidemiology of angiostrongylosis. The present paper provides the first description of pathomorphological lesions caused by A. vasorum in a golden jackal (Canis aureus). The paper describes a case of co-infection with A. vasorum and Dirofilaria immitis in a one-year-old female golden jackal, legally hunted near the City of Kov
