[Killing in wild boar traps - Studies on the point of impact and effects of head shots (caliber .22 lr) in wild boar (Sus scrofa)].

OBJECTIVE: The spread of African swine fever in Germany has brought wild boar trapping back into focus as a method for animal disease control. While data on free-bullet slaughter in domestic mammals is available, data on the gun shot and caliber selection for use in wild boar trapping is largely lacking. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The heads of 138 wild boars captured in 10 corral-style traps and shot with a bullet (caliber .22 lr) were analyzed with respect to following data: number of bullet entry holes, bullet entry location, as well as tissue damage to the brain and bleeding by the use of froze

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy: current status and possible impacts.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy is an apparently new disease; first recognized in 1985, its pathological distinction was first reported in 1986. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy is a member of a group of transmissible encephalopathies that includes scrapie in sheep and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease in humans. Early indications of its epidemiology suggested that the disease was transmitted via cattle feed containing meat and bone meals from previously infected animals. The tissues most likely to contain infectious agents were considered to be nervous tissues and offal, and their inclusion in rumin

Controlling bovine leukemia virus in dairy herds by identifying and removing cows with the highest proviral load and lymphocyte counts.

The objective of this field trial was to reduce bovine leukemia virus (BLV) transmission and prevalence in commercial dairy herds using proviral load (PVL) and lymphocyte count (LC) measurements as indicators of the most infectious animals for culling or segregation. Bovine leukemia virus causes lymphoma in <5% of infected cattle, and increased lymphocyte counts (lymphocytosis) in about one-third. Recent research has shown that dairy cows infected with BLV have altered immune function associated with decreases in milk production and lifespan. Recent findings show that a minority of infected ca

Lifetime performance traits of Holstein cows: implications of first-lactation milk yield and culling causes.

The study examined the impacts of first-lactation milk yield and culling causes on lifetime performance traits in Holstein cows culled after their second to sixth parities. Complete lactations from 12,209 records belonging to 4522 culled cows were included in the study. Reproductive problems, mastitis, metabolic disorders, lameness, endemic diseases, and respiratory diseases represented culling causes. The resulting means were 371 ± 2.0 days for days in milk 30,223 ± 374 kg for lifetime milk yield, 13.5 ± 0.4 kg for milk per day of cow age, 38 ± 0.4 months for productive life, 68 ± 0.4 months

Bovine tuberculosis model validation against a field study of badger vaccination with selective culling.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a costly disease in Britain and Ireland shared by cattle and badgers (Meles meles), and to reduce the infection in cattle to low levels some form of badger management is considered necessary. We compare the results of a badger field trial where test-positive badgers are culled, and test-negative badgers vaccinated (a TVR approach) with the results of the simulation model originally used to predict the effect of the trial in Northern Ireland. Initial model results depended strongly on whether social perturbation occurred in the badger population following culling, a

Natural SARS-CoV-2 infection in farmed minks (Neovison vison) causes lung pathology, systemic viral spread, and transmission risk, even in asymptomatic animals.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, the first disease outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in farmed minks (Neovison vison) was reported in the Netherlands, followed by outbreaks in other countries. The disease in minks is characterized by interstitial pneumonia and viral replication in both the upper and lower respiratory tracts, resulting in respiratory disease and, in some cases, death. A major concern, besides animal health problems, is that minks are a potential reservoir for SARS-CoV-2, with a zoonotic impact for human Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19), underscorin

Identification of the first case of atypical scrapie in Japan.

A Corriedale ewe was confirmed as the first atypical scrapie case during an active surveillance program for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in small ruminants in Japan. The animal was homozygous for the AF141RQ haplotype of PRNP. The animal showed clinical neurological signs possibly due to listeriosis before culling. Western blot analysis showed an unusual multiple banded pattern with a low-molecular fragment at ~7 kDa. Histopathology revealed suppurative meningoencephalitis caused by listeriosis in the brainstem. Fine granular to globular immunostaining of disease-associated prion

Prevalence of dental and mandibular disorders in culled sheep in Spain.

At the slaughterhouse, 1465 culled sheep heads were studied in order to identify disorders of the mandibular cheek teeth. Of these, 227 (15.5%) had evidence of osteomyelitis. The lesional profile showed that the mandible was affected in a similar proportion on both sides (46.7% on the right side vs 50.7% on the left side), mainly in the middle region (55.3%) and with most of the lesions closed without fistulisation (89.4%). In addition, swelling was palpable, with an increase in thickness in the area of the affected body (2.65 ± 0.065 cm vs 1.74 ± 0.030 cm). In 78.6% of the animals, the region

Retrospective Analysis of the Epidemiological Evolution of Brucellosis in Animals - China, 1951-1989 and 1996-2021.

Brucellosis poses a significant threat to public health in China. This study utilized a range of epidemiological indices, including seroprevalence and the number of reported cases, to illustrate the epidemic profile of the disease. Although the seroprevalence of brucellosis in animals (including sheep, goats, cattle, and swine) steadily decreased from a severe epidemic level in the 1950s to a low endemic level by 1989, the disease reemerged in 2000. Subsequently, there has been a persistent increase in the frequency of outbreaks and the number of reported cases from 2006 to 2021, with over 98%

BCG vaccination for bovine tuberculosis; conclusions from the Jerusalem One Health workshop.

The global burden of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) remains poorly characterized, with spill-over impacts on multiple species. The "One Health" concept is especially relevant given the bidirectional risk of cattle infecting humans with Mycobacterium bovis and humans infecting cattle with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. "Test and cull" is the traditional bTB control method, but the strategy may not be economically feasible or culturally acceptable where cattle are highly prized or their killing is a religious taboo; it is also less effective when there are wildlife reservoirs of infection. Vaccination w

High-prevalence of bovine leukemia virus in cow-calf operations: Implications for cow reproduction, culling, and calf weight.

This study determined the prevalence of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection and proviral load (PVL) in cow-calf operations and evaluated their impact in productive metrics. A cohort of 1969 Angus-cross cows from 12 Virginia cow-calf operations was followed between Fall 2021 and Fall 2024. Blood samples were collected at two time points, one year apart, and tested by ELISA; PVL was quantified by qPCR in ELISA-positive cows. Pregnancy, culling, and weaning weight outcomes were analyzed using mixed logistic, Cox proportional hazards, and linear regression models. The PVL results were stratified

Economic burden and cost-effectiveness of brucellosis control strategies in large commercial dairy herds in Bangladesh: A Bayesian decision-analytic study.

Bovine brucellosis caused by Brucella abortus is endemic in Bangladesh, but its financial cost and the economics of control have not been quantified for the commercial dairy sector. We estimated the annual economic burden of infection in 17 large commercial dairy herds (194-2850 animals; 2696 animals tested), compared six control strategies over a 10-year economic horizon, and simulated a phased programme combining adult mass vaccination with subsequent test-and-cull. Herd-specific Bayesian posterior estimates of true prevalence and force of infection (FOI, the annual hazard of infection in a

Post-mortem examination of genital organs from sows with reproductive disturbances in a sow-pool.

Over a period of approx. 15 months, post-mortem (PM) examinations were made on genital organs (34 gilts and 81 sows) from a sow-pool with reproductive disturbances. Anamnestic data on the animals included information about parity number, date of farrowing, dates of weaning, oestrus and service, and cause of culling. At the PM examination, the macroscopic appearance of the ovaries (follicles, corpora lutea, cysts) and uterus (content, endometrium) were studied. Specimens from the endometrium was examined histologically. The most common reason for culling was repeat breeding (67%), in most cases

The feasibility and acceptability of various bovine brucellosis control strategies in India.

Bovine brucellosis is a neglected zoonotic disease prevalent in several developing countries including India. It has been successfully controlled in many developed countries by using vaccination in conjunction with extensive surveillance and test-and-cull approaches, but some of these approaches do not suit Indian culture and norms. This study was conducted to investigate the feasibility and social acceptability of various bovine brucellosis control strategies in India. Focus group discussions and key-informant interviews were conducted with veterinarians, para-veterinarians, veterinary academ

Costs of rabies control: an economic calculation method applied to Flores Island.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a zoonotic disease that, in most human cases, is fatal once clinical signs appear. The disease transmits to humans through an animal bite. Dogs are the main vector of rabies in humans on Flores Island, Indonesia, resulting in about 19 human deaths each year. Currently, rabies control measures on Flores Island include mass vaccination and culling of dogs, laboratory diagnostics of suspected rabid dogs, putting imported dogs in quarantine, and pre- and post-exposure treatment (PET) of humans. The objective of this study was to estimate the costs of the applied rabies contro

A Genealogy of Animal Diseases and Social Anthropology (1870-2000).

Culling, vaccinating, and monitoring animals are the three main techniques used in contemporary veterinary public health to manage animal diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Each technique is underpinned by different ontological understandings of how microbes figure in relations between humans and animals. Therefore, animal diseases are not only a question for an applied anthropology but also involve the theoretical core of the discipline: that is, understanding how social causality emerges out of physical causality. To defend this argument, the article describes what Herbert Spencer w

The effect of prolonged cold storage of eland (Taurotragus oryx) cauda epididymides on the spermatozoa: possible implications for the conservation of biodiversity.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of prolonged storage of cauda epididymides at 4 degrees C on spermatozoa, and to determine the practicality of utilising epididymal sperm, harvested from testes collected during routine culling of game animals, in assisted reproductive technologies. Testes from eland (Taurotragus oryx) were collected and epididymides removed and maintained at 4 degrees C. Sperm motility, viability, morphology and membrane integrity were examined at 12 h intervals for 108 h. Sperm motility and viability were significantly lower at the end of the exper
