Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a novel coronavirus in humans, has expanded globally over the past year. COVID-19 remains an important subject of intensive research owing to its huge impact on economic and public health globally. Based on historical archives, the first coronavirus-related disease recorded was possibly animal-related, a case of feline infectious peritonitis described as early as 1912. Despite over a century of documented coronaviruses in animals, the global animal industry still suffers from outbreaks.

Autoimmune liver diseases (AILDs) are potentially life-threatening chronic liver diseases which include autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and recently characterized IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis. They are caused by immune attack on hepatocytes or bile ducts, with different mechanisms and clinical manifestations. The etiologies of AILDs include a susceptible genetic background, environment insults, infections, and changes of commensal microbiota, but remain complicated. Understanding of the underlying mechanisms of AILDs is mandatory for ea

Neurodegenerative diseases affect millions of individuals worldwide. So far, no disease-modifying drug is available to treat patients, making the search for effective drugs an urgent need. Neurodegeneration is triggered by the activation of several cellular processes, including oxidative stress, mitochondrial impairment, neuroinflammation, aging, aggregate formation, glutamatergic excitotoxicity, and apoptosis. Therefore, many research groups aim to identify drugs that may inhibit one or more of these events leading to neuronal cell death. Venoms are fruitful natural sources of new molecules,

BACKGROUND: Disorders of mineral and bone metabolism have been implicated as a risk factor in the high mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hyperphosphatemia, disorders of vitamin D metabolism and secondary hyperparathyroidism of uremia (SHPT) are therapeutic targets in these patients to improve the mortality. Animal models for CKD are indispensable and uremic rats produced by 5/6-nephrectomies are one of the most useful animal models for the development of new therapeutic agents. As there are limitations of uremic rats such as short lifespan and less severity of secondary

UNLABELLED: Laboratory-animal allergy (LAA) is a well-known occupational hazard to workers employed in biological or medical research institutes and in the pharmaceutical industry. The aim of this study was to focus on the problem of LAA and to assess factors predisposing to sensitization among subjects occupationally exposed to animals. Sixty workers were examined in our study. They responded to a questionnaire and underwent spirometry (Vital Capacity, VC and Forced Expiratory Volume in one second, FEV1). In addition, Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) and the histamine provocation test were estimate

In ancient times in Iran, infectious diseases of animals and human beings were referred to as choleraic diseases. Rhazes (9th century), followed by Avicenna (10th century), Jorjani (11th century) and others, had specific opinions on the cause and effect relationship in these diseases, which recall the fermentation theory of Louis Pasteur. In ancient Iran, the methods adopted for veterinary procedures were those of general theoretical and practical medicine, including the humoral theory, accurate diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and the prescription of herbal and mineral medicines or substances o

Animal pathogenic microorganisms destabilize livestock economies and jeopardize human health through zoonotic transmission and foodborne illness. Traditional culture-based detection methods, while standardized, are time-consuming and labor-intensive, often failing to meet the urgent need for rapid on-site or point-of-care (POC) monitoring required to prevent disease outbreaks and manage animal health effectively. By integrating latest research advances, this study reviews advances in rapid detection technologies for animal pathogens, including the evolution of nucleic acid amplification strate

Hypoxia-related diseases, such as altitude sickness, acute lung injury, and heart failure, have emerged as significant public health challenges worldwide and are strongly associated with increased mortality risks. These conditions tend to cause functional impairment and structural alterations in multiple organs, primarily due to inadequate oxygen supply or the inability of tissues to utilize oxygen effectively. To elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying hypoxia-associated diseases and to explore potential therapeutic strategies, researchers have employed animal models to conduct

Cortex Moutan is the root bark of the buttercup plant Paeonia suffruticosa Andr, of Ranunculaceae family. It has been utilized in Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat a multitude of diseases, and traditional Chinese documents allege that it has heat-clearing, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and detoxicating properties. Paeonol is a bioactive substance extracted from Cortex Moutan, which is considered to be one of its most effective metabolites. Recent studies have illustrated that paeonol treatment can alleviate skin damage, relieve the inflammatory response in patients with numerou

Experiments in animals have played an integral role in furthering basic understanding of the pathophysiology, host immune response, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. However, competing demands of modern-day clinical training and increasingly stringent requirements to perform animal research have reduced the exposure of infectious disease physicians to animal studies. For practitioners of infectious diseases and, especially, for contemporary trainees in infectious diseases, it is important to appreciate this historical body of work and its impact on current clinical practice. Transboundary pathogens of goats present significant constraints to the livelihoods of millions of farmers in countries such as Zambia. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (Mccp), foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV), Brucella spp., Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), and Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in Zambian goats. Another aim was to identify associations between seroprevalence and different predictor variables, such as trade and border proximity. From September to October 2019, 962 serum samples were

The international prominence accorded the 'One Health' concept of co-ordinated activity of those involved in human and animal health is a modern incarnation of a long tradition of comparative medicine, with roots in the ancient civilizations and a golden era during the 19th century explosion of knowledge in the field of infectious disease research. Modern One Health tends to focus on zoonotic pathogens emerging from wildlife and production animal species, but one of the most significant One Health challenges is rabies for which there is a canine reservoir. This review considers the role of sma

Prion related disorders are associated with the accumulation of a misfolded isoform (PrPsc) of the host-encoded prion protein, PrP. There is strong evidence for the involvement of unidentified co-factors in the PrP to PrPsc conversion process. In this study, we show alpha-synuclein-immunoreactive deposits in the central nervous system of various prion diseases (sporadic, iatrogenic and new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases, and experimental scrapie of hamsters). alpha-Synuclein accumulated close to PrPsc deposits but we did not observe strict colocalization of prion protein and alpha-synuclei
