Occupational allergy to phytase: case series of eight production workers exposed to animal feed additives.

BACKGROUND: In agricultural meat production, adding enzymes such as phytase to animal feed is widespread, but there is little awareness of the allergenic potential and health risks of these fungal enzymes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report on eight patients working in a plant producing phytase granulates. All patients complained about work-related rhinitis occurring within six months of the onset of exposure to phytase dust. Asthmatic symptoms and contact urticaria also occurred. To detect sensitizations to phytase, skin prick-, patch-, and basophil activation test were carried out with the fac

Associations between off-label feed additives and farm size, veterinary consultant use, and animal age.

Data from the United States National Swine Survey collected by the National Animal Health Monitoring System were used to describe the use of feed additives in swine feeds. Data were collected from 710 farms. The concentration of feed additives expressed in grams per ton of complete feed was described by stage of production, and the use of feed additives above the labeled treatment levels (i.e. off-label) was identified. Of the 3328 feeds, about 79% contained feed additives used in the labeled manner. For all classes of pigs, the prevalence of labeled feed additive use was greater than 75%. Pen

[Marginal notes on the admissibility and the application of veterinary drugs and animal feed additives].

In principle, registration of a veterinary drug requires more detailed testing for toxicity than does a human drug; among other things, because of possible presence of drug residues in the edible tissues of animals. It is stated that this is not necessarily a requirement for all veterinary drugs. It is essential, however, when a drug is used for mass-medication. Three objectives may be differentiated in these cases, namely, a nutritional a preventive and a curative purpose. In discussing these objectives, it is pointed out that (despite the fact a Veterinary Drugs Act has not been adopted so f

Biting the hand that feeds you: Management of human and animal bites.

Bites from animal and humans represent a very small proportion of all the patients presenting to emergency departments, However, they require prompt medical and surgical intervention in order to minimise the risk of infection, that may lead to limb and life-threatening complications. In this review article we synthesise the existing literature for treatment of human and animal bites and offer practical considerations when managing bite injuries.

Warning: feeding animals hydrophilic fiber sources in dry diets.

Feeding animals large quantities of dry hydrophilic fiber sources, such as psyllium husk or guar gum, may lead to intestinal obstruction or to other mechanical effects unrelated to the normal function of these materials in human diets. Such fiber sources should be hydrated prior to feeding, rather than being incorporated into dry diets as is. The water-holding capacity of psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid, for example, is greater than or equal to 40 g/g, compared to 2-3 g/g of wheat bran. Consumption of the psyllium product dry would be much more likely to produce intestinal dehydration than woul

Association of Common Zoonotic Pathogens With Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.

Animal farming has intensified significantly in recent decades, with the emergence of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in industrialized nations. The congregation of susceptible animals in CAFOs can lead to heavy environmental contamination with pathogens, promoting the emergence of hyper-transmissible, and virulent pathogens. As a result, CAFOs have been associated with emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses, hepatitis E virus, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Streptococcus suis, livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Cryptosporidium parvu

Engineered phytases for emerging biotechnological applications beyond animal feeding.

Phytases are important industrial enzymes able to catalyze the release of up to six phosphates from phytate in a stepwise hydrolysis reaction. Phytases are almost exclusively used as a feed supplement. However, phytases are also used in human nutrition, food processing, non-food industrial products, and emerging applications like enzymatic phosphate recovery from renewable resources. Phytate, the main phosphorus storage form in seeds, and its hydrolysis products act as a chelator and reduce protein and mineral bioavailability in intestinal absorption. Full phosphate hydrolysis from the common

Feeding of ticks on animals for transmission and xenodiagnosis in Lyme disease research.

Transmission of the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, occurs by the attachment and blood feeding of Ixodes species ticks on mammalian hosts. In nature, this zoonotic bacterial pathogen may use a variety of reservoir hosts, but the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) is the primary reservoir for larval and nymphal ticks in North America. Humans are incidental hosts most frequently infected with B. burgdorferi by the bite of ticks in the nymphal stage. B. burgdorferi adapts to its hosts throughout the enzootic cycle, so the ability to explore the functions of these spir

Detection and species identification of Cryptosporidium from Taiwan feeding animals.

In this study, 107 fecal specimens were collected from 40 sampling sites in Taiwan livestock and avian farms to test for Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts. Ten of 107 samples analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed the presence of Cryptosporidium spp., among which 6 samples were simultaneously confirmed by immunofluorescence assay and polymerase chain reaction. Nucleic acid sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene identified 3 clusters of Cryptosporidium spp. Three Cryptosporidium parvum isolates were from cattle and sheep feces. One Cryptosporidium andersoni isolate was detected from pig feces

Horticultural wastes as sustainable alternative feed resources for livestock: processing technologies, nutritional value, and animal performance.

The rapid expansion of the horticulture sector has resulted in the generation of substantial quantities of fruit and vegetable waste, posing environmental and waste disposal challenges. The improper disposal of these residues may contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, environmental pollution, and loss of potentially valuable nutrients. Concurrently, the rising cost and increasing demand for conventional feed resources have intensified the exploration of sustainable and economical alternatives for livestock and poultry feeding systems. This review examines the potential of horticultural waste

From waste to protein: a new strategy of converting composted distilled grain wastes into animal feed.

Distilled grain waste (DGW) is rich in nutrients and can be a potential resource as animal feed. However, DGW contains as much as 14% lignin, dramatically reducing the feeding value. White-rot fungi such as Pleurotus ostreatus could preferentially degrade lignin with high efficiency. However, lignin derivatives generated during alcohol distillation inhibit P. ostreatus growth. Thus, finding a new strategy to adjust the DGW properties to facilitate P. ostreatus growth is critical for animal feed preparation and DGW recycling. In this study, three dominant indigenous bacteria, including Sphingob

Density of animal feeding operations, including concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs), and cancer incidence: A county-level ecological study across three U.S. states.

BACKGROUND: Animal feeding operations (AFOs) including concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are significant sources of environmental pollution with potential public health implications. Despite growing concern of environmental health risk, few studies have assessed the associations between exposure to AFOs/CAFOs and cancer incidence across diverse geographic regions and populations. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates county-level cancer incidence by state in relation to AFO/CAFO exposure in three US states. METHODS: We analyzed county-level incidence data for all- and site-specific

The Importance of Hazard Analysis by Critical Control Point for Effective Pathogen Control in Animal Feed: Assessment of Salmonella Control in Feed Production in Sweden, 1982-2005.

This study is the first to show that Hazard Analysis by Critical Control Point (HACCP)-based monitoring can be an effective tool for ensuring Salmonella-safe feed, by virtually eliminating feedborne Salmonella infection even in broiler production. Data from the control of Salmonella in feed and food animal production during 1982-2005, showed that conventional endpoint testing in feed mills did not ensure a Salmonella-safe feed, and in one feed mill failed to detect Salmonella contamination, resulting in the feed infecting 80 out of 197 (40.6%) recipient broiler flocks. Following implementation

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in food animals. Human food safety and animal feed safety concerns for veterinarians.

This article presents a brief overview of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) using examples of diseases that provide evidence supporting oral transmission of the agent. Agent theories are described briefly in general terms. Scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), chronic wasting disease, and transmissible mink encephalopathy are discussed to improve disease recognition by the food animal practitioner. Control programs for scrapie and BSE are described and the role of the veterinarian in animal feed and human food safety is related to TSEs.
