[Osteological development of the vertebral column and caudal complex of Lujanus guttatus (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) larvae under rearing conditions].

The spotted rose snapper (Lutjanus guttatus) is an important commercial species in Mexico with good culture potential. The osteological study at early stages in this species is an important tool to confirm normal bone structure and for the detection of malformations that may occur during early development. This study was carried out in order to evaluate and describe the normal osteological development of the vertebral column and caudal complex of this species grown under controlled conditions. For this, a total of 540 larvae of L. guttatus, between 2.1 and 17.5 mm of total length (TL), were cu

Skeletal development and abnormalities of the vertebral column and of the fins in hatchery-reared turbot Scophthalmus maximus.

To describe the skeletal development and abnormalities in turbot Scophthalmus maximus, samples were collected every day from hatching to 60 days after hatching (DAH). A whole-mount cartilage and bone-staining technique was used. Vertebral ontogeny started with the formation of anterior haemal arches at 5·1 mm standard length (L(S) ) c. 11 DAH, and was completed by the full attainment of parapophyses at 16·9 mm L(S) c. 31 DAH. Vertebral centra started to develop at 6·3 mm L(S) c. 16 DAH and ossification in all centra was visible at 11·0 mm L(S) c. 25 DAH. The caudal fin appeared at 5·1 mm L(S)

Ecological drivers of movement for two sympatric marine predators in the California current large marine ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: An animal's movement reflects behavioral decisions made to address ecological needs; specifically, that movement will become less directional in regions with high prey availability, indicating foraging behavior. In the marine realm, animal behavior occurs below the sea surface and is difficult to observe. We used an extensive satellite tagging dataset to explore how physical and biological habitat characteristics influence blue (Balaenoptera musculus) and fin (B. physalus) whale movement and foraging behavior in the California Current Ecosystem across four known bioregions. Anti-diabetic effect of Coptis Chinensis polysaccharide in high-fat diet with STZ-induced diabetic mice.

For the past few years, numerous polysaccharides and polysaccharide-protein complexes have been isolated from plant or animal and used as a promising source of therapeutic agents for diabetes mellitus (DM). In this study, a water-soluble polysaccharide, named as CCPW-1, was extracted and fractioned from the roots of Coptis Chinensis by DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow anion-exchange and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography. The determination of the monosaccharide composition in CCPW-1 with gas chromatography (GC) showed that CCPW-1 was composed of glucose (54.8%), arabinose (22.3%), xylose (11.5%), ga

Shifts in acoustic signature of Southern Hemisphere fin whales: Declining peak frequency of high-frequency components.

Population-specific acoustic features are vital for using passive acoustic monitoring to study marine mammal populations in remote regions. Southern Hemisphere fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) songs include region-specific high-frequency components, with the 86- and 99-Hz high-frequency components present in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean. Using long-term passive acoustic monitoring data, we show that, despite gradual interannual and intra-annual variabilities, these features remain distinct and recognizable across regions and years. Our findings support their use as reliable acous

Hydrodynamically Derived Negative Lift Generation of the Cephalic Lobes of Foraging Benthopelagic Myliobatids to Maintain Ground Contact.

The cownose ray (Rhinoptera bonasus) and spotted eagle ray (Aetobatus narinari) are benthopelagic myliobatids that forage on the ocean bottom. To sense prey under the bottom substrate, cownose rays deploy two depressible cephalic lobes, which are anterior modifications of the pectoral fins. Spotted eagle rays have a delta-shaped flattened rostrum from two fused cephalic lobes that is angled down in contact with the substrate when foraging. Geometry and orientation of the cephalic lobes of both rays, when in contact with the bottom, potentially indicate a passive hydrodynamic function. CT scans

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a Model for Understanding the Process of Caudal Fin Regeneration.

After its introduction for scientific investigation in the 1950s, the cypriniform zebrafish, Danio rerio, has become a valuable model for the study of regenerative processes and mechanisms. Zebrafish exhibit epimorphic regeneration, in which a nondifferentiated cell mass formed after amputation is able to fully regenerate lost tissue such as limbs, heart muscle, brain, retina, and spinal cord. The process of limb regeneration in zebrafish comprises several stages characterized by the activation of specific signaling pathways and gene expression. We review current research on key factors in lim

Hypostomus sertanejo (Siluriformes: Loricariidae), new armoured catfish species from north-eastern Brazil.

A re-evaluation of the armoured catfish species of Hypostomus in the Rio Jaguaribe, north-eastern Brazil, was prompted by the discovery of specimens with pale spots on a dark background collected from that basin c. 1936 and deposited at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Recent field collections in the Rio Jarguaribe basin confirmed the presence of the pale-spotted specimens and its distinctiveness as a new species. Hypostomus sertanejo n. sp. is diagnosed from other species of Hypostomus by having fins and dermal-plated regions of head and body with pale spots or vermiculations

Constraints on lunge feeding: krill can clog the baleen of filter-feeding whales.

Rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae) grow to exceptional size by lunging to engulf entire swarms of fish or krill, then rapidly concentrating prey using a baleen filter. A 20-m-long fin whale can engulf 60 m3 of water and 144 kg of krill in a single gulp and expel the water in 31 s, allowing the animal to make six lunges in a single 8 min dive. But there is a problem hidden in this apparently efficient scheme. Spread uniformly across the 2.9 m2 of the baleen window, 144 kg of krill forms a layer 6.3 cm thick. If the accumulated krill clog the filter, it could increase the time needed to expel wate

The convergent evolution of the pelvic suction cup: A unique key innovation in spiny-finned fishes.

Key innovations open ecological opportunities and can redirect evolutionary trajectories. In spiny-finned fishes, the pelvic suction cup-a fused adhesive structure formed from the pelvic fins and supported by a modified girdle-appears to be one such trait. Using a novel 960-species phylogeny spanning 940 exons and 67 newly sequenced snailfish genomes, we show that the suction cup evolved independently three times across lineages separated by over 100 million years. By enabling adhesion in high-energy habitats such as tide pools and waterfalls, the suction cup set the stage for body depression

Identification of "Spinal Enlargements" Correlating with Paired and Unpaired Fins in Zebrafish.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Cervical and lumbar enlargements involving several spinal segments are present in the spinal cord of tetrapods, reflecting the heavy motor and sensory innervation of limbs. Such spinal enlargements are not apparent in teleost fishes. However, teleosts possess paired pectoral and pelvic fins that are homologous to forelimbs and hindlimbs, respectively, and modest spinal enlargements might be present in teleosts as well. METHODS: In the present study, therefore, we have investigated the innervation of different fins by spinal nerves in zebrafish. We then investigate

Growth and mechanical correlations of calcified cartilage in Batoidea: A histomorphological study using the Raja asterias model.

This study investigates the growth and calcification of the appendicular skeleton in Raja asterias (Delaroche, 1809), a member of the Batoidea, to explore the relationship between histomorphology and the mechanics of batoid locomotion within the water column. Although much prior research has focused on the "tessellated pattern" in these fishes, the variable structure of the appendicular skeleton provides fresh insights into the understudied interplay between skeletal histomorphology and the mechanical functions of Batoidea fins. The shape and initial growth of fin cartilage are influenced by t

Sequence of formation and inheritance of meristic variation in the post-cranial axial skeleton of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

Atlantic salmon is an important aquaculture species that has fascinated naturalists for centuries, resulting in its biology being widely characterized. Certain details about the early development and the inheritance of meristic variation in the post-cranial axial skeleton are, however, largely unexplored. The present study gives a detailed description of the sequence of formation of the post-cranial axial skeleton based on whole-mount staining and used radiology to investigate the inheritance of meristic variation in isogenic hybrid all-male families of Atlantic salmon (~4 kg). Eight different

Tunable stiffness in fish robotics: mechanisms and advantages.

One of the emerging themes of fish-inspired robotics is flexibility. Adding flexibility to the body, joints, or fins of fish-inspired robots can significantly improve thrust and/or efficiency during locomotion. However, the optimal stiffness depends on variables such as swimming speed, so there is no one 'best' stiffness that maximizes efficiency in all conditions. Fish are thought to solve this problem by using muscular activity to tune their body and fin stiffness in real-time. Inspired by fish, some recent robots sport polymer actuators, adjustable leaf springs, or artificial tendons that t

Ultrastructural changes in fin epithelium of Channa punctatus (Bloch) exposed to mercuric chloride: sem study.

Fish skin is in direct contact with water and forms the first line of defense against pathogens and toxicants present in the surrounding water. The effect of mercuric chloride (HgCl2) on surface architecture of the epidermis of caudal fin of an air breathing fish, Channa punctatus was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and revealed the presence of microridges that formed intricate, maze-like patterns. The exposed fish showed significant alterations including disorganization of microridge pattern and increase in number as well as enlargement of mucus cell openings. These findings ex

Variation in flexural stiffness of the lepidotrichia within and among the soft fins of yellow perch under different preservation techniques.

Although the ray-finned fishes are named for their bony, segmented lepidotrichia (fin rays), we are only beginning to understand the morphological and functional diversity of this key vertebrate structure. Fin rays support the fin web, and their material properties help define the function of the entire fin. Many earlier studies of fin ray morphology and function have focused on isolated rays, or on rays from only one or two fins. At the same time, relatively little is known about how different preservation techniques affect the material properties of many vertebrate structures, including fin

Regulation of zebrafish fin regeneration by vitamin D signaling.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that has long been known to regulate skeletal growth and integrity. In models of major appendage regeneration, treatment with vitamin D analogs has been reported to improve aspects of zebrafish fin regeneration in specific disease or gene misexpression contexts, but also to disrupt pattern in regenerating salamander limbs. Recently, we reported strong mitogenic roles for vitamin D signaling in several zebrafish tissues throughout life stages, including epidermal cells and osteoblasts of adult fins. To our knowledge, molecular genetic approaches to

Skull and buccal cavity allometry increase mass-specific engulfment capacity in fin whales.

Rorqual whales (Balaenopteridae) represent not only some of the largest animals of all time, but also exhibit a wide range in intraspecific and interspecific body size. Balaenopterids are characterized by their extreme lunge-feeding behaviour, a dynamic process that involves the engulfment of a large volume of prey-laden water at a high energetic cost. To investigate the consequences of scale and morphology on lunge-feeding performance, we determined allometric equations for fin whale body dimensions and engulfment capacity. Our analysis demonstrates that larger fin whales have larger skulls a

A giant stem-group chaetognath.

Chaetognaths, with their characteristic grasping spines, are the oldest known pelagic predators, found in the lowest Cambrian (Terreneuvian). Here, we describe a large stem chaetognath, Timorebestia koprii gen. et sp. nov., from the lower Cambrian Sirius Passet Lagerstätte, which exhibits lateral and caudal fins, a distinct head region with long antennae and a jaw apparatus similar to Amiskwia sagittiformis. Amiskwia has previously been interpreted as a total-group chaetognathiferan, as either a stem-chaetognath or gnathostomulid. We show that T. koprii shares a ventral ganglion with chaetogna

Features of the vertebral column and caudal fin skeleton for identifying Engraulis australis in food of the Australasian gannet Morus serrator, Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand.

Identifying fish species from their bone remains is employed in identifying the prey of aquatic animals. However, diagnostic skeletal descriptions are scarce for fish species prey found in the food of piscivorous birds and other marine predators in New Zealand. The present article addresses this knowledge gap, providing a diagnostic description for the vertebral column and the skeleton of the caudal fin of the Australian anchovy Engraulis australis inhabiting coastal waters in and around the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand. The vertebral column of E. australis is divided into four morphologically di
