BACKGROUND: Previous work revealed the existence of a severe thymic atrophy with massive loss of immature CD4+CD8+ thymocytes in animals developing insulin-dependent diabetes, chemically induced by alloxan. Furthermore, the intrathymic expression of chemokines, such as CXCL12, is changed in these animals, suggesting that cell migration-related patterns may be altered. One molecular interaction involved in normal thymocyte migration is that mediated by soluble semaphorin-3A and its cognate receptor neuropilin-1.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated herein the expression and role of semaphorin-3A in the

Rabbits were sensitized with Micropolyspora faeni by intratracheal inoculations and later challenged with the same antigen either with or without parenteral administration of cortisone acetate prior to challenge. Animals developed anti-M. faeni serum precipitins, M. faeni-induced alveolar macrophage migration inhibition, and positive 48-hr skin reactivity to M. faeni. Sensitized animals also demonstrated an augmented pulmonary histopathological response following respiratory challenge with M. faeni when compared to non-sensitized controls. Cortisone acetate abrogated this augmented pulmonary h

The study of neurogenesis and neural progenitor cells (NPCs) is important across the biomedical spectrum, from learning about normal brain development and studying disease to engineering new strategies in regenerative medicine. In adult mammals, NPCs proliferate in two main areas of the brain, the subventricular zone (SVZ) and the subgranular zone, and continue to migrate even after neurogenesis has ceased within the rest of the brain. In healthy animals, NPCs migrate along the rostral migratory stream (RMS) from the SVZ to the olfactory bulb, and in diseased animals, NPCs migrate toward lesio

Geographic spread of parasites and pathogens poses a constant risk to animal health and welfare, particularly given that climate change is expected to potentially expand appropriate ranges for many key species. The spread of deleterious organisms via trade routes and human travelling is relatively closely controlled, though represents only one possible means of parasite/pathogen distribution. The transmission via natural parasite/pathogen movement between geographic locales, is far harder to manage. Though the extent of such movement may be limited by the relative inability of many parasites a

Enteric glia are neural crest derivatives. Kabouridis et al. (2015) now show in adult animals that new glia arise within the ganglia of enteric plexuses and then migrate centripetally to colonize the mucosa. Remarkably, enteric microbiota regulate this critical migration.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The enteric nervous system, which regulates many gastrointestinal functions, is derived from neural crest cells (NCCs). Defective NCC migration during embryonic development may lead to enteric neuropathies such as Hirschsprung's disease (hindgut aganglionosis). Sox10 is known to be essential for cell migration but downstream molecular events regulating early NCC migration have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to determine how Sox10 regulates migration of sacral NCCs toward the hindgut using Dominant megacolon mice, an animal model of Hirschsprung's disease with

INTRODUCTION: Titanium is a widely used biomaterial for implants. Research is focused on optimizing titanium by modifying its surface structure and porosity to prevent complications such as implant loosening or foreign body reactions. However, changes to implant materials necessitates preclinical testing, often involving animal testing, which gives rise to ethical concerns. This underscores the significant demand for test systems that can reduce time and costs. Although in vitro models can provide valuable initial insights into the biological evaluation of biomaterials and help reduce the need

Schwann cells are support cells in the peripheral nervous system and are responsible for migration, adhesion, production of the extracellular matrix, and myelination. Migration is considered to be essential for nerve regeneration after transsection. We have examined the chemokinetic effects of nerve growth factor (NGF), brain derived growth factor (BDNF), and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) on Schwann cells in vitro using a chemotaxis chamber. The chemokinetic activity of Schwann cells was strongly accelerated by NGF, but was not influenced by BDNF. NT-3 at a concentration of 1 ng/ml had a stimulatory e

No information concerning the effect of weaning on intestinal cell proliferation is currently available in large species with early intestinal morphogenesis, a group including most domestic animals and humans. Changes in intestinal morphology and epithelial cell renewal were investigated in 1-, 5-, and 8-wk-old suckling and 8-wk-old weaned lambs after injection of [3H]thymidine. In suckling lambs a gradual increase in crypt depth occurred with age, especially in the proximal intestine, whereas villus height was significantly reduced in the distal regions. At 8 wk of age weaned and prolonged-su

BACKGROUND: The need for newer gastrointestinal (GI) stents has been continuously raised. Newly developed stents are generally tested for physical properties in vitro and directly introduced to clinical practice because there is no reliable animal model of GI obstruction. The aim of this study was to establish an animal model both that can represent obstruction of the GI tract and be used to develop new stents.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Surgical obstruction of the descending colon by wrapping with a nonabsorbable synthetic mesh and rubber bands was made in 17 healthy mongrel dogs. Four days later

In exudates of implanted sponges in rats, made thrombocytopenic by the administration of anti-platelet serum, there are significant reductions in the platelet and leucocyte counts and of the content of prostaglandin-like activity. It is concluded that platelets migrate into the developing sponge exudates, are the source of the prostaglandins and interact with complement to cause leucocyte migration. In normal animals the administration of indomethacin and sodium salicylate cause similar effects to thrombocytopenia whereas the injection of human plasma fraction affects only the leucocyte migrat

Mammalian reproductive processes involve spermatogenesis, which occurs in the testis, and fertilization, which takes place in the female genital tract. Fertilization is a successive, multistep, and extremely complicated event that usually includes sperm survival in the uterus, sperm migration through the uterotubal junction (UTJ) and the oviduct, sperm penetration through the cumulus cell layer and the zona pellucida, and sperm-egg fusion. There may be a complex molecular mechanism to ensure that the above processes run smoothly. Previous studies have discovered essential factors for these fer

Mononuclear leukocytes isolated from the blood of rabbits, were labeled with 51Cr and returned to the animal intravenously. 51Cr-labeled monocytes disappeared from the blood with a half-life of 39.0 +/- 2.51 hours. Numerous acute inflammatory lesions were produced by the intradermal injection of Escherichia coli into the skin of the back of a rabbit. The animal was sacrificed after 1 hour, and the radioactivity in each lesion was determined. Monocyte accumulation was substantial by the time a lesion was 1 hour old. The maximum rate of accumulation occurred at 3--4 hours, and monocytes continue

In peripheral nerve transection injury, continuity of axons as well as that of the basal lamina is disconnected. In such case, migrating Schwann cells (SCs) would be the only axonal guidance at an early stage of regeneration. However, it takes a few days for the dedifferentiated SCs to start migration, while axonal growth begins a few hours after injury. Consequently, the axons without guidance extensively branch out and wander off at the lesion, resulting in aberrant reinnervation. Therefore, enhancing SCs migration could be an attractive therapeutic strategy. In this study, we investigated t

Complications related to extraluminal migration of ingested kebab (sosatie) sticks are infrequently diagnosed in small animals. A total of 8 cases diagnosed with extragastric migration of ingested kebab sticks were retrospectively evaluated. No significant breed or sex predilection was found but there was a tendency for animals to present at a younger age (less than 3 years). Clinical signs (of variable duration) were non-specific and included haemoptysis, abdominal pain, regurgitation, subcutaneous abscessation and chronic draining sinus tracts, making a clinical diagnosis difficult. We have examined the spatial and temporal gradients of two developmental processes in albino and pigmented rats: outer plexiform layer (OPL) development, and rate of cell production. The OPL first appears as a thin, discontinuous break in the cytoblast layer that is frequently interrupted by the profiles of migrating neuro- and glioblasts. In both strains, this occurs in an area temporal to the optic disc that corresponds to the eventual site of peak ganglion cell density, but is not located along the line of nasotemporal division. The OPL is first evident at P5 in pigmented animals, but its a

BACKGROUND: The incidence of colonic stenosis, primarily caused by colon cancer and Crohn's disease, is increasing each year. The development of safer stents for colonic stenosis is required because perforation associated with cancer stent placement worsens the prognosis and stent placement for anastomotic stenosis due to Crohn's disease or colectomy is not first choice due to the high migration rate. The wall of the large intestine where the stent is inserted receives the complex forces from the peristaltic movement of the large intestine and stool in addition to the reaction tension of the s

The potential therapeutic benefits from human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) cells for the treatment of injuries, diseases, and neurodegeneration are becoming increasingly recognized. The transplantation or infusion of cord blood cells in various animal models, such as ischemia/stroke, traumatic brain injury, myocardial infarction, Parkinson's disease, and amyotropic lateral sclerosis, has resulted in amelioration of behavioral deficits, and with some diseases, a prolonged lifespan decreased neuropathology. Previously, we reported the migration of HUCB cells to ischemic brain supernatant (tissue

Well defined cell-mediated immune responses were detectable following experimental immunization of hamsters with Entamoeba histolytica antigen, using glucan as an adjuvant. Peritoneal cells from amoeba antigen-glucan sensitized animals, upon incubation with specific antigen in vitro, were found to release into the supernatant a macrophage migration inhibition factor (MIF). Such supernatant fluids inhibited the migration of macrophages from non-sensitized hamsters. The production of MIF was found to be greatly increased if glucan is added to amoeba antigen when sensitizing animals. The optimal

INTRODUCTION: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is the most frequent form of partial epilepsy. Granule cell dispersion, resulting from aberrant neuronal migration in the hippocampus, is pathognomonic of MTLE.
