Aniseikonia, although present in isometropia, is associated principally with anisometropia and is widely thought to be the result of differences in the retinal image size presented to each eye. This assumes that equating retinal image size results in congruous cortical images. To test this assumption 1 refractive and 17 axial anisometropic subjects were examined to determine the aniseikonia present when corrected with spectacles and contact lenses. Contrary to many previous predictions, based upon Knapp's Law, the presence of equal retinal images resulted in larger aniseikonias than observed w

BACKGROUND: The anisometropic eye of patients with bilateral hyperopic refractive amblyopia is presumed to have worse prognosis for visual acuity than the fellow eye. We sought to investigate the effect of anisometropia on visual prognosis in patients with bilateral hyperopic refractive amblyopia in order to estimate the necessity and timing of patching. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 71 patients with bilateral hyperopic refractive amblyopia aged ≤ 5 years at the initial visit. Hyperopia was defined as spherical equivalent (SE) power of ≥2.0 diopters (D) in both ey

Anisometropia is a unique condition of both eyes and it is associated with vision problems such as amblyopia and reduced stereoacuity. Previous studies have not reported its change pattern by age and its correlation with the refractive condition of both eyes. This study aims to compare the changes in anisometropia by age in children with hyperopia, myopia, and antimetropia. In total, 156 children were included. Children aged 3-11 years with anisometropia ≥ 1.00 D were followed up for ≥ 1 year with ≥ 2 visits at two medical centers in Taiwan. Refractive errors by cycloplegic autorefractometry,

In recent years the Eye Department at Aalborg University Hospital has had many referrals of older children with severe amblyopia due to anisometropia. Anisometropia is not visible, thus a monocular vision examination is needed in order to detect it. Early detection increases the possibilities for a better post treatment visual acuity. Recent studies indicate positive treatment response also in older children, and some older individuals respond dramatically. Currently it is not possible to predict who will respond, and therefore treatment should be offered despite the age of the child if the ch

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: To show that anisometropia does not absolutely preclude the prescription of progressive lenses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one anisometropes and presbyopes were selected for a prolonged trial of visual correction using progressive lenses. The congenital or acquired type of their anisometropia and its particular form were also studied. Each patient was submitted to a protocol comprising of a series of ophthalmologic and orthoptic tests so as to evaluate the patient's subjective far and near refraction, with measurement of phorias and of horizontal and vertical duction

To examine the association between interocular difference in refraction and ocular biometry in children with anisometropia. This analysis included 91 children aged 6-16 years with anisometropia, identified from a cross-sectional, school-based study of 765 children. All children underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination, including cycloplegic biometry and refractometry. The refractive lens power (RLP) was calculated using Bennett's equation. The mean interocular difference in SE was 2.24 ± 1.48D. Compared to the contralateral eye, the more myopic eye or less hyperopic eye exhibited a sig

PURPOSE: We have recently described a rapid technique for measuring suppression using a dichoptic signal/noise task. Here, we report a modification of this technique that allows for accurate measurements to be made in amblyopic patients with high levels of anisometropia. This was necessary because aniseikonic image size differences between the two eyes can provide a cue for signal/noise segregation and, therefore, influence suppression measurement in these patients.
METHODS: Suppression was measured using our original technique and with a modified technique whereby the size of the signal and

The purpose of this study was to measure whether emmetropisation failed in children who had strabismus irrespective of their refraction in infancy, and to record simultaneous changes in anisometropia. We also report how often hypermetropia increased before these children presented with esotropia. A total of 2920 infants had a cycloplegic retinoscopy at age 5-7 months and again at 42 months or when defective vision was identified. Changes of refraction in 210 children with strabismus are compared with the remaining 2710 who did not. When the spherical equivalent of the fixing eyes was > +2.75 D

CASE REPORT: A male with cylindrical anisometropia secondary to retinal detachment (RD) surgery in the right eye (OD) was referred for contact lens (CL) fitting. His refraction was OD -1.25 -2.75 x 60 degrees VA 1.0 and OS +0.25 VA 1.2. He was complaining of diplopia with spectacles. Seven years prior to the RD surgery, he had undergone LASIK without complications. The diplopia was eliminated after a CL was fitted according to his corneal topography.
DISCUSSION: RD surgery can cause anisometropic refractive changes. In patients with diplopia and asthenopia, spectacles are not well tolerated.
